Download or read book Collective Memory written by Jo McCormack and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2010 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collective Memory examines the difficult transmission of memory in France of the Algerian War of independence (1954-1962). Emphasizing the current lack of transmission of memories of this war through a detailed case study of three crucial vectors of memory-the teaching of school history, coverage in the media, and discussion in the family- author Jo McCormack argues that lack of transmission of memories is feeding into contemporary racism and exclusion in France. Collective Memory draws extensively on interviews with historians, teachers, and pupils, as well as on secondary sources and media analysis. McCormack proposes that a greater "work of memory" needs to be undertaken if France is to overcome the division in French society that stems from the war. There has been little reconciliation of divisive group memories, a situation that leaves many individuals without a voice on this important subject. "Memory battles" dominate discussion of the topic as many issues periodically flare up and cannot yet be overcome. Book jacket.

Book Synopsis Modern Algeria by : John Douglas Ruedy
Download or read book Modern Algeria written by John Douglas Ruedy and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the largest countries in Africa and in the Arab world, Algeria in the last half of the twentieth century has stood as a compelling model of national liberation and development. Yet, as the century nears a close, Algeria is beset by a national crisis, its economy in virtual collapse, its single-party political system discredited, and its cultural identity challenged by emergent Islamic fundamentalism. John Ruedy provides the first up-to-date history of Algeria's evolution from a segmented tribal order under the Ottoman Empire through five generations of French colonial exploitation, to an eight-year war of liberation, and finally to independent statehood. A concluding chapter surveys the developing political and economic crisis of the 1980s and 1990s, which witnessed Algeria at a crossroads between the Islamists and military rule. -- Back cover.
Book Synopsis Cornwall and the Cross by : Nicholas Orme
Download or read book Cornwall and the Cross written by Nicholas Orme and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cornwall's place-names and churches are unique. They commemorate an enormous number of local and little-known saints - such as St Austell, St Ives, and St Just. This book explains how this came about, how Cornwall came to be Christian after the end of the Roman Empire, and how its religious history developed through the Middle Ages and into the Reformation. Every aspect of Christian life is covered: the early Church, the effects of the English and Norman Conquests, the foundation of monasteries and friaries, and the history of the parish. There is a full account of the Reformation in Cornawall, showing what was swept away and what survived. The book is about people. It probes the identity of the early Cornish saints and explains the daily life of monks, friars, and parish clergy, also highlighting their substantial contribution to the Church outside Cornwall. The author emphasizes the positive role played by lay people. Far from being passive onlookers in pews, they were involved in appointing clergy, building and running parish churches, founding chapels, forming guilds, going on pilgrimages, and staging religious plays. Celtic or Catholic? This book explores Cornwall's religious history as a whole, and shows how the Cornish developed distinctive traditions while fully sharing in the Christianity of western Europe. 'The Christian faith in Cornwall is more than fifteen hundred years yound and it could not have a more dedicated, learned and attractive writer to help us all to be aware of the heritage which is ours' - The Rt Revd William Ind, Bishop of Truro.
