Book excerpt: Utilisation of groundwater is steadily growing in many parts of the world to cope up with the increasing demand in various water user sectors. However scientific use of the precious groundwater calls for proper planning which involve modeling of the system. Recently for groundwater system planning and management use of soft computing tools is growing since these are found better than conventional numerical optimisation technique. Since groundwater problems involve non-linear objective function, their gradient with respect to parameters cause numerical instability. Simulated annealing, artificial neural network and genetic algorithms help in assessment of near global optimal solutions which are meaningful for real system simulation. Synthetic aquifer problems considered in the presented book are particularly useful to demonstrate the application of SA, ANN and GA to assess the aquifer system parameters. However when properly understood from the given applications these can be meaningfully applied to real problems.

GOVINDARAJU and ARAMACHANDRA RAO School of Civil Engineering Purdue University West Lafayette, IN. , USA Background and Motivation The basic notion of artificial neural networks (ANNs), as we understand them today, was perhaps first formalized by McCulloch and Pitts (1943) in their model of an artificial neuron. Research in this field remained somewhat dormant in the early years, perhaps because of the limited capabilities of this method and because there was no clear indication of its potential uses. However, interest in this area picked up momentum in a dramatic fashion with the works of Hopfield (1982) and Rumelhart et al. (1986). Not only did these studies place artificial neural networks on a firmer mathematical footing, but also opened the dOOf to a host of potential applications for this computational tool. Consequently, neural network computing has progressed rapidly along all fronts: theoretical development of different learning algorithms, computing capabilities, and applications to diverse areas from neurophysiology to the stock market. . Initial studies on artificial neural networks were prompted by adesire to have computers mimic human learning. As a result, the jargon associated with the technical literature on this subject is replete with expressions such as excitation and inhibition of neurons, strength of synaptic connections, learning rates, training, and network experience. ANNs have also been referred to as neurocomputers by people who want to preserve this analogy.

Book excerpt: Optimization Algorithms - Classics and Last Advances is devoted to developing algorithm theory and exploring the use of different optimization algorithms for solving various problems in pure science, applied physics, and information technology. The book consists of two sections. The first focuses on developing abstract algorithms with subsequent applications to real-world optimization problems. It discusses optimization problems based on partial differential equations, canonical polyadic decomposition, variational approach, and ant colony optimization, which are discussed here. The second section presents problems related to optimization in information technologies. Chapters in this section address the utilization of optimization algorithms to solve problems of reducing computation time and computer memory, reducing kernel mechanism processing time in multimedia authoring tools, arranging access optimization for special applications, and minimizing resources for solving vehicle routing problems.

This book was released on 1985-07-01 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Standing alone as the main authority on the subject, this handbook is the result of a multi-million dollar investigation into groundwater monitoring strategies at energy extraction sites. It gives a detailed, step-by-step description of a proven groundwater monitoring methodology which can be used at all potential pollution sites. This methodology, developed by the author and a ``blue ribbon'' team of hydrologists and hydrogeologists from all over the United States, is endorsed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as ``establishing the state-of-the-art used by industry today''.Although site-specific data are provided, the handbook is developed for general application to coal and oil shale development. All sources of potential groundwater contamination from these two energy extraction types are identified as part of the overall monitoring strategy. Sampling methods are presented, including well design, monitor well placement, sample collection methods, sampling frequency, sample preservation and handling, selection and preservation of constituents for monitoring, sample analysis, and interpretation of water quality data. A complete review is provided of drill stem steps, dual packer tests, long term pump tests, and single packer tests. In addition, hydraulic methods, the application of geophysical techniques including temperature, caliper, gamma ray, spinner, radioactive tracer, velocity, sonic, density, electric, and seisviewer logs are presented. The use of a chronological series of steps, each being fully developed and extensively referenced, means that it is particularly easy to follow for the reader wishing to establish a groundwater monitoring program at a coal or oil shale site. One of the great advantages of the handbook is that it is very detailed, with actual data provided. The handbook is a must for consulting engineers, coal and oil development companies, government and private environmental groups, institutes and universities involved in pollution studies. It will also undoubtedly be used to good advantage by teachers and students for many different types of courses including geological engineering, coal and oil shale mining, environmental geology, sanitary engineering, hydrogeology, etc.
