Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a study of attitudes toward animals in early modern Western culture. Emphasizing the influence of anthropocentrism on attitudes toward animals, historian Nathaniel Wolloch traces the various ways in which animals were viewed, from predominantly anti-animal thinking to increasingly pro-animal sentiments and viewpoints. Wolloch devotes a chapter each to six major themes: early modern philosophical perspectives on animals till the end of the seventeenth century, pro-animal opinions in the eighteenth-century, the connection between attitudes toward animals and the early modern debate about the existence of extraterrestrial life, scientific modes of discussing animals, the role of animals in early modern anthropomorphic literature, and depictions of animals in seventeenth-century Dutch and Flemish painting. He concludes his broad, interdisciplinary study by linking these historical trends to the modern discussion of animal rights and ecological issues.

There was a time when animal prints were only worn by the most daring fashionistas, a bold style statement that only a few could pull off. However, the fashion world has made the trend far more accessible in recent years, with softer colors and inventive reworking of the prints that has given many items more subtlety. Whether fiercely bold or delicately playful, few are now able to resist the call of the wild. Book excerpt: Andrea Branzi, one of Italy's foremost designers and critics and Nicoletta Branzi, designer of limited edition art clothing for women, introduce the neoprimitive style under the generic title Domestic Animals. These mysterious creature-objects are oriented to domestic settings, intended to be used or worn, but they are also fetishistic and contemplative, arousing expectations that magic or tribal rituals are about to be performed. Uniting precision of design with natural raw materials, these objects fashioned from tree trunks, sticks of wood and animal skins joined to steel bamboo rods and painted in bright, totemic colors fascinate us. Taken out of their wild settings and tamed by technology, domestic animals establish a loving relationship with man, sharing his most private space. We have not seen anything like them in the world of interior, furniture, or fashion design before. The ideas and creations in Domestic Animals were developed by the Branzis over several years, and can be understood as a metaphor of the relationship that links man to a number of animal and technical presences within the home. The Branzis have created clothing, furniture, and objects of decoration that challenge the conventional notions of habitation: Where living too often takes place in empty spaces marked out by couches they have introduced an environment of archetypal symbols and materials that invite a new way of inhabiting the home. Andrea Branzi lives and works in Milan where he is Educational Director of Domus Academy and Editorial Director of MODO. His last book, The Hot House: Italian New Wave Design, is an MIT Press paperback.

Book excerpt: An alarming and enlightening first-hand account of what's really going on behind the borders of the Islamic State. ISIS, IS, the Islamic State. The name is chilling. The images are horrific. This is a group that chops the heads off journalists - and yet one, the German Jürgen Todenhöfer, went out of his way to get an invitation to visit ISIS fighters in Mosul to ask them to explain their beliefs. This book is the result of his conversation. My Journey into the Heart of Terror: Ten Days in the Islamic Stateshows how the organisation grew from its al-Qaeda roots and takes a harsh look at the West's role in its past and today. Only by understanding, Todenhöfer believes, can we move forward and combat ISIS's radical, violent interpretation of Islam and the terror and destruction it brings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intersection of race and species has a long and problematic history. Western thinking specifically has demonstrated a societal need to try to conceive of race as a purely biological fact rather than a social construct. This book is an academic-activist challenge to that instinct, prioritizing anti-racism in its observation of the animal–race intersection. Too often, as Bénédicte Boisseron has indicated, this intersection typically appears in the form of animal activists instrumentalizing racial discrimination as a vehicle to approach animal rights. But why does this intersection exist, and, perhaps more importantly, how can we challenge it moving forward? This volume examines those two critical questions, taking an interdisciplinary approach in moving across subjects including art history, film studies, American history, and digital media analysis. Our interpretation of animals has, for centuries, been fundamental in the development of Western race thinking. This collection of essays looks at how this perspective contributes to the construction of racial discrimination, prioritizing ways to read the animal in our culture as a means for working to dismantle this conception.
