This book was released on 2018-09-27 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every sector of the livestock industry, the associated services and the wellbeing of both animals and humans are influenced by animal feeding. The availability of accurate, reliable and reproducible analytical data is imperative for proper feed formulation. Only reliable analysis can lead to the generation of sound scientific data. This document gives a comprehensive account of good laboratory practices, quality assurance procedures and examples of standard operating procedures as used in individual specialist laboratories. The adoption of these practices and procedures will assist laboratories in acquiring the recognition of competence required for certification or accreditation and will also enhance the quality of the data reported by feed analysis laboratories. In addition, ensuring good laboratory practices presented in the document will enhance the safety of the laboratory workers. The document will be useful for laboratory analysts, laboratory managers, research students and teachers and it is hoped that it will enable workers in animal industry, including the aquaculture industry, to appreciate the importance of proven reliable data and the associated quality assurance approaches. An additional effect of implementing and adopting these approaches will be strengthening of the research and education capabilities of students graduating from R&D institutions and promotion of a better trading environment between developing and developed economies. This will have long-term benefits and will promote investment in both feed industries and R&D institutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For food scientists, high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is a powerful tool for product composition testing and assuring product quality. Since the last edition of this volume was published, great strides have been made in HPLC analysis techniques—with particular attention given to miniaturization, automatization, and green chemistry. Thoroughly updated and revised, Food Analysis by HPLC, Third Edition offers practical and immediately applicable information on all major topics of food components analyzable by HPLC. Maintaining the rigorous standards that made the previous editions so successful and lauded by food scientists worldwide, this third edition examines: Recent trends in HPLC HPLC separation techniques for amino acids, peptides, proteins, neutral lipids, phospholipids, carbohydrates, alcohols, vitamins, and organic acids HPLC analysis techniques for sweeteners, colorants, preservatives, and antioxidants HPLC determinations of residues of mycotoxins, antimicrobials, carbamates, organochlorines, organophosphates, herbicides, fungicides, and nitrosamines HPLC determinations of residues of growth promoters, endocrine disrupting chemicals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls, and dioxins HPLC applications for the analysis of phenolic compounds, anthocyanins, betalains, organic bases, anions, and cations Presenting specific and practical applications to food chemistry, the contributors provide detailed and systematic instructions on sample preparation and separation conditions. The book is an essential reference for those in the fields of chromatography, analytical chemistry, and, especially, food chemistry and food technology.

Book Synopsis The Return of W3 Fatty Acids Into the Food Supply by : Artemis P. Simopoulos
Download or read book The Return of W3 Fatty Acids Into the Food Supply written by Artemis P. Simopoulos and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique publication for the first time brings together scientists from academia, government and industry to discuss the role of omega-3 fatty acids in health, the need to reintroduce them into the food supply, the methods by which this can be accomplished and the state of research. With the domestication of animals, there has been a change in animal feeds, which in turn transformed the composition of meats, particularly the content of essential fatty acids. Changes similar to those in meats have occurred in the composition of eggs, poultry and in fish from aquaculture. Up-to-date reviews on the role of omega-3 fatty acids in health, cardiovascular disease, bone remodeling relative to osteoporosis and in patients with retinitis pigmentosa emphasize the need for a balance of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids in the food supply. The reintroduction of omega-3 fatty acids into food products is discussed, and the methods involved in their production as well as their metabolic effects on human beings and companion animals are outlined. Overall, the papers presented indicate the necessity to establish recommended daily intakes for both omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids. Furthermore, there is a need to redefine food safety; changes in food composition must also be taken into consideration. This unique publication is a valuable source for physicians, nutritionists, dietitians, veterinarians and agriculturalists, as well as for all those concerned with aspects of food production, food technology, food policy and consumer issues.
Book Synopsis Canola and Rapeseed by : Usha Thiyam-Holländer
Download or read book Canola and Rapeseed written by Usha Thiyam-Holländer and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-11-21 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2010, esteemed researchers gathered at a workshop held at the Richardson Centre for Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada. Drawn from these proceedings, Canola and Rapeseed: Production, Processing, Food Quality, and Nutrition presents state-of-the-art information on the chemistry of the minor constituents of canola and rapeseed and their impact on human health. The book also identifies new areas of research and opportunities for the industrial application of functional foods and nutraceuticals from canola and rapeseed. Topics include: The historical development, properties, and performance of canola Characteristics and bioactives of sinapic acid derivatives and the decarboxylation pathways leading to their formation Canola protein processing High omega-9 canola oils and their future applications Modification of Brassica oilseeds Rapid analytical methods for measuring oil content The potential of ultrasound and supercritical fluid extraction for producing value-added by-products The processing of virgin rapeseed oils in Europe Extraction and application of canola protein The frying stability of high-oleic low-linolenic acid canola oils The potential of mustard oil for biodiesel The final chapters demonstrate the health benefits of canola, including antioxidant, antimutagenic, and anticancer properties. Authored by experienced researchers in the field, the book chapters have been expanded considerably to include a number of areas not contained in the original workshop, providing comprehensive coverage of the potential of this essential crop.

Book Synopsis Chemical Analysis of the Environment and Other Modern Techniques by : Sut Ahuja
Download or read book Chemical Analysis of the Environment and Other Modern Techniques written by Sut Ahuja and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the rise in general awareness of the effects of trace chemicals in the environment on man's health, it has been realized that traditional methods of analysis are often inadequate. Reliable analyses are needed in the fractional parts-per million range of contaminants in condensed phases, and of the order of micrograms per cubic meter in air. Trying to get meaningful answers regarding such minute amounts raises cogent problems in all stages of an analysis. It is most appropriate, therefore, that the 1971 Eastern Analytical Symposium should have four half-day sessions devoted to this general field. Two of these, entitled "Trace Metals in the Envi ronment," were assembled by Dr. Kneip, one on "Pesticides in the Environment: Recently Discovered Analytical Problems," by Dr. Zweig, and one on "The Determination of Anions in Water," by Dr. Lambert. Together, these reports furnish a fairly complete picture of the present state of environmental anal ysis. The remainder of this volume is devoted to pharmaceutical analysis, a diversified field in which nearly all analytical methods find a place. Partly because of this multiplicity of techniques, and partly due to the large number of samples which must be examined in connection with the manu facture, biological testing, and clinical applica tion of pharmaceutical preparations, this area is particularly appropriate for the introduction of automation. The objective, broadly, is to speed up multiple analyses without the sacrifice of accuracy.
