Book excerpt: "The author has shown his usual logical acuteness and methodical arrangement. The whole work must be regarded as a valuable contribution to the important division of chemical knowledge of which it treats; and it will doubtless form an indispensable treatise to the physiologist and whoever wishes to form clear notions on the chemical principles and chemical phenomena of animal bodies." So wrote a reviewer of the present work in the 1844 volume of the "Edinburgh Medical and Surgical Journal". Thomson was a well-known and highly respected Scottish practical chemist, largely self-taught, who produced a number of equally significant books on chemistry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animal Bodies, Renaissance Culture examines how the shared embodied existence of early modern human and nonhuman animals challenged the establishment of species distinctions. The material conditions of the early modern world brought humans and animals into complex interspecies relationships that have not been fully accounted for in critical readings of the period's philosophical, scientific, or literary representations of animals. Where such prior readings have focused on the role of reason in debates about human exceptionalism, this book turns instead to a series of cultural sites in which we find animal and human bodies sharing environments, mutually transforming and defining one another's lives. To uncover the animal body's role in anatomy, eroticism, architecture, labor, and consumption, Karen Raber analyzes canonical works including More's Utopia, Shakespeare's Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet, and Sidney's poetry, situating them among readings of human and equine anatomical texts, medical recipes, theories of architecture and urban design, husbandry manuals, and horsemanship treatises. Raber reconsiders interactions between environment, body, and consciousness that we find in early modern human-animal relations. Scholars of the Renaissance period recognized animals' fundamental role in fashioning what we call "culture," she demonstrates, providing historical narratives about embodiment and the cultural constructions of species difference that are often overlooked in ecocritical and posthumanist theory that attempts to address the "question of the animal."

Book excerpt: Several books chronicle attempts, most of them during the last 40 years, to teach animals to communicate with people in a human-designed language. These books have typically treated only one or two species, or even one or a few research projects. We have provided a more encompassing view of this field. We also want to reinforce what other authors, for example Jane Goodall, Sue Savage-Rumbaugh, Penny Patterson, Birute Galdikas, and Roger and Deborah Fouts, so passionately convey about our responsibility for our closest animal kin. This book surveys what was known, or believed about animal language throughout history and prehistory, and summarizes current knowledge and the controversy around it. The authors identify and attempt to settle most of the problems in interpreting the animal behaviours that have been observed in studies of animal language ability.

Book excerpt: ‘Empire and the Animal Body: Violence, Identity and Ecology in Victorian Adventure Fiction’ develops recent work in animal studies, eco-criticism and postcolonial studies to reassess the significance of exotic animals in Victorian adventure literature. Depictions of violence against animals were integral to the ideology of adventure literature in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. However, the evolutionary hierarchies on which such texts relied were complicated by developing environmental sensitivities and reimaginings of human selfhood in relation to animal others. As these texts hankered after increasingly imperilled areas of wilderness, the border between human and animal appeared tense, ambivalent and problematic.

Book excerpt: Clonmacnoise was among the busiest, most economically complex, and intensely sacred places in early medieval Ireland. In Animals and Sacred Bodies in Early Medieval Ireland: Religion and Urbanism at Clonmacnoise, John Soderberg argues that animals are the key to understanding Clonmacnoise’s development as a thriving settlement and a sacred space. At this sanctuary city on the River Shannon, animal bodies were an essential source of food and raw materials. They were also depicted extensively on religious objects. Drawing from new theories about the intersections between religion and economics, John Soderberg explores how transformations emerging from animal encounters made Clonmacnoise a sacred settlement and created the sacred bodies of early medieval Ireland.

Book excerpt: Animal Body Language is part of the R.U.F.F. Program, innovative animal based teaching. This curriculum was developed after children were bitten by dogs running around Chinle. One little boy ended up with a scar from the top of his forehead angled down to his chin. He had crawled under a trailer and tried to pet a dog and was savagely bitten in the face. This small boy had his life forever changed from this horrible incident. Something had to be in the schools to help the children understand more about dog behavior to avoid incidents like this. This curriculum is complete and has thematic unit tie-ins in social studies, language, behavior, safety issues, reading, art, writing and drama. There are suggested student activities that involve games, quizzes, animal behavior board set-up ideas, journal and creative writing. Animals helped extrapolate expressions of emotions and incorporated self-esteem where all else had failed. It teaches responsible behavior that proved extremely effective. www.ruffprogram.com

Book excerpt: Frankie Conner, first-year graduate student at UC Berkeley, is finally getting her life together. After multiple failures and several false starts, she’s found her calling: become a neuroscientist, discover the cause of her depression and anxiety, and hopefully find a cure for herself and everyone like her. But her first day of the program, Frankie meets a mysterious group of talking animals who claim to have an urgent message for her. The problem is, they’re not willing to share it. Not yet. Not until she’s ready. While Frankie’s new friends may not have her highly evolved, state-of-the-art, exalted human brain, they do know things she doesn’t--poems, scientific facts, and what happened in the forgotten years before her adoption. Frankie can’t dismiss her conversations with these animals as mere dreams, but she also can’t accept them as real. To prove she’s still sane, she investigates her past and defies the professor who heads her lab to conduct a series of scientific experiments to test just how much animals are capable of communicating. Just when Frankie uncovers the truth, she has to make an impossible choice: betray the animals she’s fallen in love with—or give up her dream of neuroscience, her last chance at success, and everything she thought she knew.
