It is the first of its kind in this subject area that guides students through the diverse and fascinating fields of behavioral and ethological studies, employing a wide array of organisms as model systems for the study of behavior. Students participate in the development of hypothesis and turn the recording, analysis, and interpretation of data into an active and engaging process. A teacher-friendly companion website provides extensive teaching notes on the background to each lab project, tips and hints for successful project presentation, sources for studying organisms, ideas for variations in labs, and alternate study organisms. This text is recommended for undergraduate courses in Animal Behavior, Ethology, and Behavioral Ecology. Provides fully developed and tested laboraty exercises Offers both field and lab experiences- adaptable for fall, spring, or summer courses Laboratories emphasize student thought and involvement in experimental design Includes an online supplement to the manual for teachers

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring Animal Behavior in Laboratory and Field is designed to provide a variety of exercises that engage students actively in all phases of scientific investigation, from formulating research questions through interpreting and presenting final results. It attempts to share the collective teaching expertise and experience of members of the Animal Behavior Society with all who are willing to benefit from their wisdom. Four types of exercises are presented: (1) traditional exercises in which students follow a pre-determined protocol to test particular hypotheses explicitly stated in the exercise, (2) traditional exercises that can easily be adapted to inquiry-based approaches, (3) combined pedagogy exercises that involve both traditional and inquiry approaches, and (4) inquiry exercises in which students first brainstorm to generate their own hypotheses, then design their own experiements to test their hypotheses. * Supports a range of pedagogical styles and texts in animal behavior with active learning experiences that engage students * Students and instructors benefit from knowledge and experience of members of the Animal Behavior Society * Flexibility of design enables students and instrucotrs to tailor the exercises to their needs * Can be used to support lab courses that are completely inquiry based as well as independent student research projects in animal behavior * Consideration of animal care guidelines provides an excellent way to address and discuss concerns about the use of animals in teaching and research * Emphasizes the hypothetico-deductive approach that students have difficulty understanding and implementing * Supporting materials make additional required texts unnecessary and link study design considerations with real studies

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning with Darwin's work in the 1870s, Foundations of Animal Behavior selects the most important works from the discipline's first hundred years—forty-four classic papers—and presents them in facsimile, tracing the development of the field. These papers are classics because they either founded a line of investigation, established a basic method, or provided a new approach to an important research question. The papers are divided into six sections, each introduced by prominent researchers. Sections one and two cover the origins and history of the field and the emergence of basic methods and approaches. They provide a background for sections three through six, which focus on development and learning; neural and hormonal mechanisms of behavior; sensory processes, orientation, and communication; and the evolution of behavior. This outstanding collection will serve as the basis for undergraduate and graduate seminars and as a reference for researchers in animal behavior, whether they focus on ethology, behavioral ecology, comparative psychology, or anthropology. Published in association with the Animal Behavior Society

It provides all the details to successfully run designed activities while also offering flexibility and ease in setup. The exercises in this volume address animal behavior at all levels, describing behavior, theory, application and communication. Each lab provides details on how to successfully run the activity while also offering flexibility to instructors. This is an important resource for students educators, researchers and practitioners who want to explore and study animal behavior. The field of animal behavior has changed dramatically in the past 15 - 20 years, including a greater use and availability of technology and statistical analysis. In addition, animal behavior has taken on a more applied role in the last decade, with a greater emphasis on conservation and applied behavior, hence the necessity for new resources on the topic. Offers an up-to-date representation of animal behavior Examines ethics and approvals for the study of vertebrate animals Includes contributions from a large field of expertise in the Animal Behavior Society Provides a flexible resource that can be used as a laboratory manual or in a flipped classroom setting

Book excerpt: Excerpt from chapter III: Subject of animal behavior has been of in- terest to human beings from the earliest times, but it has not been taken very seriously until a comparatively recent date. The ways of animals were considered curious, interesting and in many ways useful things to know about, but the great theoretical import of animal psychology was unsuspected until it came to be recognized that our own minds are the outgrowth of the animal mind, and that to obtain a truly scientific human psychology it is necessary to have a clear insight into the psychology of the lower animals from which we are descended. Near the middle of the nineteenth century Herbert Spencer enunciated the principle that, If the doctrine of evolution be true the inevitable implication is that mind can be understood only by observing how mind is evolved, and he boldly plunged forward upon an undertaking to remodel the science of psychology from the genetic standpoint. The result was the publication in 1855, four years before the appearance of the Origin of Species, of the Principles of Psychology, a work which for sheer originality, independence of treatment and profound grasp of the subject stands almost without a rival in the history of the science. Notwithstanding the work of Spencer, genetic psychology was given perhaps its greatest impetus by Darwin, not only through his influence in establishing the general doctrine of organic evolution, but also through his careful work on, and illuminating treatment of the mental life of animals.
