Book excerpt: While the state of California remains one of the most striking and varied landscapes in the world, it has experienced monumental changes since European settlers first set foot there. The past two centuries have witnessed an ongoing struggle between environment and economy, nature and humanity that has left an indelible mark on the region. Green Versus Gold provides a compelling look at California's environmental history from its Native American past to conflicts and movements of recent decades. Acclaimed environmental historian Carolyn Merchant has brought together a vast storehouse of primary sources and interpretive essays to create a comprehensive picture of the history of ecological and human interactions in one of the nation's most diverse and resource-rich states. For each chapter, Merchant has selected original documents that give readers an eyewitness account of specific environments and periods, along with essays from leading historians, geographers, scientists, and other experts that provide context and analysis for the documents. In addition, she presents a list of further readings of both primary and secondary sources. Among other topics, chapters examine. California's natural environment and Native American lands the Spanish and Russian frontiers environmental impacts of the gold rush the transformation of forests and rangelands agriculture and irrigation cities and urban issues the rise of environmental science and contemporary environmental movement. Merchant's informed and well-chosen selections present a unique view of decades of environmental change and controversy. Historians, educators, environmentalists, writers, students, scientists, policy makers, andothers will find the book an enlightening and important contribution to the debate over our nation's environmental history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this concise, engaging, and provocative work, Richard Porter introduces readers to the economic tools that can be applied to problems involved in handling a diverse range of waste products from business and households. Emphasizing the impossibility of achieving a zero-risk environment, Porter focuses on the choices that apply in real world decisions about waste. Acknowledging that effective waste policy integrates knowledge from several disciplines, Porter focuses on the use of economic analysis to reveal the costs of different policies and therefore how much can be done to meet goals to protect human health and the environment. With abundant examples, he considers subjects such as landfills, incineration, and illegal disposal. He discusses the international trade in waste, the costs and benefits of recycling, and special topics such as hazardous materials, Superfund, and nuclear waste. While making clear his belief that not every form of waste presents the same amount of risk, Porter stresses the need for open-minded approaches to developing new policies. For students, policymakers, and general readers, he provides insight and accessibility to a subject that others might leave out-of-sight, out-of-mind, or buried under an impenetrable prose of statistics and jargon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Business Environment, Second Edition, prepares students for the realities of global twenty-first-century business. Building on the success of the previous edition, it employs a wide range of examples from BRIC and CIVETS economies and offers chapters on CSR, the ecological environment, and corporate social responsibility. Authors Leslie Hamilton and Philip Webster discuss the process of globalization, the global economy, and the impact of that economy on international business organizations. Using a PESTLE framework, they analyze the economic, political, legal, financial, technological, socio-cultural, and ecological environments, clearly outlining the factors that affect the everyday business of organizations. Adopting a truly international approach, this full-color, visually engaging text features a wealth of examples and case studies. Each chapter begins and ends with a one-page case study, and fifty additional mini-cases address such compelling issues as civil unrest in North Africa, the Japanese earthquake and tsunami, Wikileaks, and Google in China. Organizations including BP, Dell, Domino's Pizza, Apple, and Procter & Gamble are featured throughout the book. A Companion Website offers numerous resources for students and instructors.

Book excerpt: The cultural and media studies perspectives on the technology of electronic consumer profiling. In this book Greg Elmer brings the perspectives of cultural and media studies to the subject of consumer profiling and feedback technology in the digital economy. He examines the multiplicity of processes that monitor consumers and automatically collect, store, and cross-reference personal information. When we buy a book at Amazon.com or a kayak from L.L. Bean, our transactions are recorded, stored, and deployed to forecast our future behavior—thus we may receive solicitations to buy another book by the same author or the latest in kayaking gear. Elmer charts this process, explaining the technologies that make it possible and examining the social and political implications. Elmer begins by establishing a theoretical framework for his discussion, proposing a "diagrammatic approach" that draws on but questions Foucault's theory of surveillance. In the second part of the book, he presents the historical background of the technology of consumer profiling, including such pre-electronic tools as the census and the warranty card, and describes the software and technology in use today for demographic mapping. In the third part, he looks at two case studies—a marketing event sponsored by Molson that was held in the Canadian Arctic (contrasting the attendees and the indigenous inhabitants) and the use of "cookies" to collect personal information on the World Wide Web, which (along with other similar technologies) automate the process of information collection and cross-referencing. Elmer concludes by considering the politics of profiling, arguing that we must begin to question our everyday electronic routines.

Book excerpt: This directory profiles environmental organizations and other entities involved with environmental preservation, focusing on the US and on national (rather than regional) groups and giving only limited coverage to research organizations within universities and to higher education listings (environmentally-related degree programs). Each of the 493 entries provides a summary of the organization's mission and programs, its budget numbers, and contact information. The guide primarily lists non-governmental organizations and government agencies, with smaller sections on the United Nations, business groups, labor unions, and opposing groups. An index would have improved the usefulness of the reference. The author is an environmental engineer and founder of the non-profit organization, Environmental Frontlines.
