This book was released on 2014-02-24 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive two-volume collection on anhedonia, a disorder that played an important role in psychopathology theories at the beginning of the twentieth century. Anhedonia is a condition in which the capacity of pleasure is partially or completely lost, and it refers to both a personality trait, and a “state symptom” in various neuropsychiatric and physical disorders. It has a putative neural substrate, originating in the dopaminergic mesolimbic and mesocortical reward circuit. Over the past three decades cognitive psychology and behavioral neuroscience have expanded our understanding of anhedonia and other reward-related processes. The aim of this new two-volume collection on anhedonia is to highlight the contributions of eminent scientists in this field as well as to provide readers with comprehensive accounts of recent developments as perceived by the authors. This monograph is divided into five parts. Volume I contains parts one and two (Conceptual Issues and Neurobiological Advances) including 14 chapters that serve as an introduction and overview of conceptual issues. Volume II contains three parts (Anhedonia in Psychotic Disorders, Anhedonia in Mood and Personality Disorders, and Anhedonia in Neurological and Physical Disorders) including 15 chapters that provide an overview of the construct, measurement of anhedonia in schizophrenia spectrum disorders, hedonic capacity and related factors in schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder, anhedonia as an indicator of genetic liability for schizophrenia, and as a trait marker for depression, the role of an anhedonia in trauma-related disorders, anorexia nervosa, stress-induced eating disorders, schizotypal traits and risk of suicide. This book will be of interest to a broad spectrum of readers including psychiatrists, psychologists, neurologists, neuroscientists, endocrinologists, pharmacologists, general practitioners, geriatricians, graduate students, and health care providers in the fields of mental health.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three studies examined emotion processing and dopamine regulation in anhedonia. In Study 1, in multiple assessments of emotional experience (e.g., naturalistic and lab contexts and social and nonsocial situations), people with elevated social anhedonia (n = 40) reported less intensity of positive affect than both controls (n = 30) and people with elevated perceptual aberration-magical ideation (n = 29). Social anhedonia was also associated with providing less emotional content when describing what it is like to experience positive situations. In contrast, both social anhedonia and perceptual aberration-magical ideation were associated with increased frequency of negative affect for their daily experiences. Moreover, social anhedonia was not associated with a decrease specifically in high-arousal emotions. In Study 2 (n = 339), social and physical anhedonia (but not perceptual aberration-magical ideation) were again associated with decreased self-reported positive affect to lab stimuli. Overall, results suggest anhedonia may be associated with a general decrease in self-reported positive affect intensity. The Val(158)Met polymorphism of the catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) gene has been associated with aspects of schizophrenia that are possibly related to the disorder's pathogenesis. In study 3, as a group, relatives of patients with schizophrenia who were homozygous for the val allele of the COMT polymorphism showed the highest elevations in self-reported social and physical anhedonia. Associations with the COMT polymorphism were absent in relatives of patients with bipolar disorder and control participants. Findings suggest that anhedonia is manifest in individuals who carry genetic liability for schizophrenia and is associated with the Val(158)Met polymorphism of the COMT gene.

Book excerpt: For several decades there has been an increasing move towards viewing the psychotic illnesses from a dimensional perspective, seeing them as continuous with healthy functioning. The idea, concentrating mostly on schizophrenia, has generated considerable theoretical debate as well as empirical research, conducted under the rubric of 'schizotypy'. This book offers a timely discussion of the most significant themes and developments in this research area. Divided into four key sections which represent current concerns in schizotypy research – Measurement, Brain and Biology; Development and Environment; Consequences and Outcomes; and Future Directions – chapters reflect a broad range of approaches and discuss varied theoretical perspectives on schizotypy. Topics include: cognitive and perceptual biases psychometric assessments creativity and schizotypy genetic associations. developmental perspectives Schizotypy: New dimensions will appeal to academics, researchers and postgraduate students in the area of psychotic illnesses, as well as professionals including psychiatrists and clinical psychologists who are concerned with the basis of serious mental disorder. The book will inform readers who are new to the topic and will update and expand the knowledge base of those more experienced in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The present study is a three-year longitudinal reassessment of schizotypic young adults and comparison participants identified by the Revised Social Anhedonia Scale (Eckblad, Chapman, Chapman, & Mishlove, 1982). Diaz, Dickerson, and Kwapil (2002) conducted a cross-sectional assessment of 78 Social Anhedonia and 68 comparison participants using a battery of interview, neurocognitive and questionnaire measures. They reported that the Social Anhedonia participants experienced elevated levels of positive and negative symptoms of schizotypy, impaired social functioning, and deficits in sustained attention and executive functioning, relative to comparison group. The present study reassessed 52 Social Anhedonia and 47 comparison participants. As hypothesized, the Social Anhedonia group continued to exhibit higher rates of schizotypic symptoms such as psychotic-like experiences, negative symptoms, and schizotypal, schizoid and paranoid symptoms, and poorer overall functioning at the three-year follow-up. A combination of interview, questionnaire and neurocognitive measures from the initial assessment incremented the prediction of schizotypic symptoms and spectrum disorders at the follow-up assessment. Furthermore, perceived stress, but not the number of significant life events, incremented the prediction of risk over-and-above the effects of social anhedonia. The results provide further support that the Revised Social Anhedonia Scale is a useful predictor of schizotypy and indicates that it is especially effective when used in conjunction with measures of clinical symptoms and neurocognition"--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

The first study examined the relationship of these constructs in 364 young adults. As hypothesized, there was a moderate association between them, which diminished after partialing out positive schizotypy. Confirmatory factor analyses found that a three-factor solution with positive schizotypy, negative schizotypy, and social anxiety factors provided the best fit, indicating that social anxiety is more associated with positive than negative schizotypy. The second study employed experience sampling methodology to examine the expression of social anhedonia and anxiety in the daily lives of 245 participants. As hypothesized, social anxiety was associated with increased negative affect, whereas social anhedonia was associated with decreased positive affect. Social anhedonia, but not social anxiety, was associated with less social contact, engagement, and enjoyment. The findings suggest that social anxiety and anhedonia are expressed differently in terms of affective responding and their relationships to the schizotypy dimensions."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

It provides a comprehensive overview of our knowledge from some of the world's leading researchers in the field, and includes reviews of genetics, neurodevelopment, assessment, psychophysiology, neuropsychology and brain imaging. Central themes are the exploration of categorical and dimensional approaches to the understanding of schizotypal disorder and its relationship to schizophrenia. Valuable introductory and concluding chapters set in context the sometimes divergent opinions and findings presented by the book's contributors and there are reviews of methodological issues and assessment schedules for the benefit of researchers in the field. In setting out to answer, from phenomenological, psychological and neurobiological perspectives, the fundamental question 'What is schizotypal disorder?' and to develop coherent etiological models, this book will serve as an authoritative resource for clinicians and researchers interested in this major personality disorder.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between schizotypy, anhedonia, and CNV amplitude. The current study examines anticipatory response in schizotypy and anhedonia population using electroencephalography (EEG) measure using a continuous performance task (CPT). "Psychometric schizotypes" were identified by their elevated scores on Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire-Brief. Participants' brain wave activity were recorded during a CPT associated with emotion recognition. The contingent negative variation amplitudes were analyzed at the frontal, central and posterior leads for each task. Participants also responded to questions on the Revised Physical Anhedonia Scale (RSAS) as a measure of the individual's ability to experience pleasure from physical stimuli such as food, sex and settings, and the Revised Social Anhedonia (RSAS) as a measure of the individual's experience of pleasure from social and interpersonal events.

Book excerpt: The present study examined emotional intelligence, relationship perception, and social anhedonia in schizotypy. Approximately 2,000 undergraduates were screened for schizotypy using the Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire. From this screening, 45 persons high in schizotypy and 45 persons low in schizotypy completed measures of emotional intelligence, relationship perception, and social anhedonia.
