Book excerpt: Angry Jogger is the coming-of-age story of Matt Waterworth a 30-year-old Northern Irish man who lost himself to the modern trappings of the bar, the TV and the pizza. Heavily overweight and depressed for most of his adult life, in 2010 he set out on a voyage of self discovery and ended up running 9 marathons, 16 half marathons and a 100k in the process. Angry Jogger charts his progress from a fat recluse to an ultra marathon runner taking him across Europe and to Las Vegas in search of fun, medals and thrills. Angry Jogger is a left field two fingered salute to the profiteering dieting and self help industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When it comes to making great decisions, the way you think about things is usually a lot more influential than what you actually think. If you ever hired a person who 'looks the part', dated someone who 'gives you a good feeling', voted for the party that 'speaks the most sense' or got into an investment that 'cannot be missed', only to realise you made a horrible mistake, you might have wondered how you ever talked yourself into it. Yet, still bearing the bruises, you're likely to make exactly the same decision the next time. The beliefs that guide your ideas and the instincts that drive your actions, are all informed by your unconscious biases, and literally every single one of us has them, which irrationally tell us one thing is good and another is bad, one thing is absolutely true and another is utterly false, and make you act less smartly than you should. But the good news is that you can learn to see them, to manage them and ultimately overcome them. In Don't Believe Everything You Think, Colin J Browne shows you how biases work, why they matter, and how to reframe your thinking to make well-founded decisions about life and work, relationships and investing, and much else in between, to vastly improve your chances of success.

Book excerpt: Despite the fact she's a woman in a man's world, Morgan Lane works hard at Goldsen Park. Wielding a chainsaw and felling trees, she tries to keep up with her bosses' constantly contradicting orders. Staying busy in the woods keeps her from thinking about Wade Newland, the one man she'd loved who left her without an explanation. Yet the photojournalist can't stay away. Wade crashes back into her life—literally—when he carries her tumbling over a ravine to save her from a stranger bearing a weapon in her park. Connected again, albeit out of danger, they attempt to figure out why someone would be toting a gun in the dark. As they sleuth their way through the tangles of bureaucracy and the many layers of deception within the Goldsen crew, they discover there is more to this incident than what meets the eye. The deeper they dig, they realize no one can be trusted, not even the law. Not only do they have to tiptoe around their still-burning feelings for each other, they need to come to a simple truce. Can they watch each other's backs and find the answers in the darkest part of the forest?

Book excerpt: “Karl, its not what you think, he raped me.” Would these words destroy the amazing career of a genius Hispanic economist known as John Carver, formerly named Julio Heinrich Romero? Would Gloria, who would never imagine that she would have to go through with an entire rape trial, ever come clean and admit she lied? Would a prosecutor, who learns half way into the case that there are some major discrepancies between what Gloria says and what actually happened, choose to go to the side of truth, or the side of winning at all costs? And would an American jury ever believe in a million years that a woman would lie about a charge of rape, and that a prosecutor would knowingly put on a fraudulent case? The Nobel Prizener is a story of American courtroom injustice, and of an unstoppable genius that continued in his path the save the world.

Book excerpt: Advance Praise for Kat Tales "If you enjoy hearing about animals getting the best of Katy Brown as much as I do, then you'll LOVE this book!" -Brad McElhinny, Managing Editor The Charleston Daily Mail ... Life is anything but tame. It's true that essayist Kathryn Brown knows how to tell a story. What's especially interesting is that Katy's success as an independent published author began with her amusing Facebook posts, considered a daily comic strip by her readers. In her first book of non-fiction, Kat Tales, a memoir of life with animals, you'll discover for yourself how Katy's creativity runs wild! Each adventure is laugh-out- loud funny, from a dangerous raccoon that she couldn't get rid of, to a pair of intruders that she couldn't wait to catch. Katy describes through vivid detail how even the smallest pet can turn into the biggest worry. Katy's humorous criticism of her own life is highlighted by dueling dialogues and awkward attempts to explain her way out of wacky situations. Kat Tales may be a collection of short stories, but it's every bit of a reality show in print! If you loved Lucy, then you'll adore Katy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last few years, the national press has lavished coverage on several major sex-related scandals: the Clarence Thomas-Anita Hill hearings, the William Kennedy Smith rape trial, and the Mike Tyson case. With each event came lurid stories pitting either a loose or virginal woman against an unwilling or monstrous man. Such extreme coverage, argues Helen Benedict, perpetuates myths that are harmful to victims of these crimes (and sometimes to the accused). In Virgin or Vamp Benedict examines the press's treatment of four notorious sex crimes from the past decade--the Rideout marital rape trial in Oregon, the Big Dan's pool table gang rape in Massachusetts, the "Preppy Murder" in New York City, and the Central Park jogger case--and shows how victims are labelled either as virgins or vamps, a practice she condemns as misleading and harmful. Benedict also looks at other factors that perpetuate the misunderstanding of rape. For instance, she shows how the New York press presented the Central Park jogger rape case as motivated by racism because of its unwillingness to consider rape an issue of gender. She also addresses our inherent language bias, the press's tendency to use sexually suggestive language to describe crime victims, and its preference for crimes against whites. In conclusion, Benedict offers a number of solutions that will help reporters cover these increasingly common crimes without further harming the victims, the defendants, or public understanding.

Book excerpt: In the follow-up to Cronus, an American spy travels to London to locate a high-profile missing person, and is faced with terror from the past If they’re going to take you, let them take you with your eyes open. That’s the credo of Clifford Driscoll, the American spy at the center of Snark, the follow-up to William DeAndrea’s Edgar Award–winning Cronus. Driscoll has gone by many names in his short, eventful life, and he’s just borrowed another: that of Jeffrey Bellman, an agent his Russian enemies at Cronus consider dead. As the son of a formidable secret intelligence director, Driscoll/Bellman is used to all kinds of existential ducking and weaving. The new Bellman is sent to England to find Sir Lewis Alfot, a missing former British intelligence chief. He hasn’t even left the London airport, though, before assassins target him. They come courtesy of Leo Calvin, a terrorist Bellman’s dealt with in the past—and Calvin has just kidnapped Alfot as bait. Can Bellman stop Calvin in his tracks, and is Alfot, for his part, as respectable and law-abiding as he seems?

Book excerpt: Anger is a daily experience. It is encountered in a number of interpersonal, family and occupational situations. Research indicates that even "normal" parents worry that they will lose control of their anger and harm their children. When short-lived and of low intensity, anger may be of some help to us; in contrast, when it is persistent and intense, it is typically highly disruptive.; This text reviews facts and theories of anger. Anger is differentiated from annoyance, fury, rage, hostility and the behaviours of aggression and violence, and attention is paid to understanding anger both as a normal experience and as a clinical disorder. Specific anger diagnoses are presented to describe disruptive anger states and traits. Anger in criminal populations is also discussed and behaviour-analytic, cognitive-constructivist and cross-cultural perspectives are presented in detail.; The book argues that it is important to understand the causes, correlations and outcomes of anger and to develop effective remediation programmes when anger is excessive and disruptive. Thus, following a meta-analyses of the effectiveness of published treatments, two chapters present "ideal" therapy programmes for adult and childhood adolescent anger disorders. Finally, a model is presented to help understand anger development and resolution.
