Il a fondé l'U.E.R. des Arts plastiques et dirige l'institut d'Esthétique. Trois de ses livres ont été couronnés par l'Institut de France. Il a été lauréat de la Fondation Guggenheim (New York) et du Conseil des Arts du Canada. Longtemps critique d'art au Nouvel Observateur, il a publié de nombreux ouvrages, tant de création littéraire que de recherche en esthétique et en histoire de l'art.
