It is a tale that takes the reader on a journey back and forth between heaven and earth as Emma Lanrete (anagram for eternal) tells her comatose mother she will give her life one more year to see if it is worth living and to determine if she is enough . . . aEURoeShe had a deadline. Ironic use of the word. In 365 days or 525,600 minutes, she would disappear or be no more. Giving herself that much more time seemed to make it justified. If in one year she could not see any difference she made in the world, she would leave it.aEUR Emma has only three people that might care if she is goneaEUR"well maybe just two . . . her genetically challenged brother and her best/only friend Cash, the third is in love with someone she cannot even see, so she's a bit distracted. No one at school knows she exists, and her father is never home. Loneliness is thick in her life. Birds fill in as friends. Emma is not aware that an aEURoeabove-teamaEUR of five ancestors is assigned to help her change her mind.

Book Synopsis Postcolonial Screen Adaptation and the British Novel by : Vivian Y. Kao
Download or read book Postcolonial Screen Adaptation and the British Novel written by Vivian Y. Kao and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-01 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings film adaptation of literature to bear on the question of how nineteenth-century imperial ideologies of progress continue to inform power inequalities in a global capitalist age. Not simply the promotion of general betterment for all, improvement in the British colonial context licensed a superior “master race” to “uplift” its colonized populations—morally, socially, and economically. This book argues that, on the one hand, film adaptations of nineteenth-century novels reveal the arrogance and coercive intentions that underpin contemporary notions of development, humanitarianism, and modernity—improvement’s post-Victorian guises. On the other hand, the book also argues that the films use their nineteenth-century source texts to criticize these same legacies of imperialism. By bringing together film adaptation, postcolonial theory, and literary studies, the book demonstrates that adaptation, as both method and cultural product, provides a way to engage with the baggage of ideological heritage in our contemporary global media environment.

Twelve-year-old orphan Eva Root travels the country pretending to channel spirits at séances. Her audiences swear their loved ones have spoken to them from beyond the grave. This, of course, is impossible. But one day, Eva experiences another impossibility: she hears a voice in her head telling her to come to the World’s Fair in Chicago. There, she meets a mysterious magician who needs her help to bring magic to life. But as their work progresses, Eva begins to suspect that the project's goals may not be as noble as they seem. And when tragedy strikes, Eva will have to reach beyond death itself to unravel the mystery of the magician's plan—before it’s too late.
