Book excerpt: From 1901 to 1969, Angels Flight was America's most famous incline railway, familiar from its many appearances on postcards and in pulp fiction and film noir. It inspired the titles of five novels, including a 1999 best seller, and three films. Angels Flight's two colorful trolleys glided up and down the side of Bunker Hill in the heart of Los Angeles, carrying 100 million passengers between a downtown business district and a Victorian aerie that gradually deteriorated into a gritty slum. When the city turned Bunker Hill into an acropolis of skyscrapers, Angels Flight was packed up like a boy's electric train set and stored away for nearly 30 years. After a restoration in the mid-1990s that led to a fatal accident, Angels Flight has reopened and is now ready to claim its next chapters in Los Angeles history.

Book excerpt: Jimmie Angel was a noted American aviator who discovered Angel Falls in Venezuela-the tallest waterfall in the world. Yet after twenty years of searching for more about the man, the author finds that there are many aspects of his legendary life that are still unknown. Jimmie Angel was a man who was controversial during his life and remains to be so to this day. Angel's Flight is a marker on the path to resolving the mysteries of Jimmie Angel's life, and author Karen Angel, Jimmie's niece, gathers together the verifiable history of the life of Jimmie Angel and his pursuit of the lost River of Gold and his discovery in 1933 of the tallest waterfall on planet Earth. But did he learn to fly when he was only fourteen years old? Did he work as an aviation scout for Lawrence of Arabia during the Arab Revolt (1916-18), create an air force for a Chinese warlord in the Gobi Desert, or work as a test pilot for Italian airplane designer Giovanni Battista Caproni?

Book excerpt: When United Flight 93, the fourth plane hijacked in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, the gash it left in the ground became a national site of mourning. The flight’s 40 passengers became a media obsession, and countless books, movies, and articles told the tale of their heroic fight to band together and sacrifice their lives to stop Flight 93 from becoming a weapon of terror. In Angel Patriots, Alexander Riley argues that by memorializing these individuals as patriots, we have woven them into much larger story of our nation—an existing web of narratives, values, dramatic frameworks, and cultural characters about what it means to be truly American. Riley examines the symbolic impact and role of the Flight 93 disaster in the nation’s collective consciousness, delving into the spontaneous memorial efforts that blossomed in Shanksville immediately after the news of the crash spread; the ad-hoc sites honoring the victims that in time emerged, such as a Parks Department-maintained memorial close to the crash site and a Flight 93 Chapel created by a local Catholic priest; and finally, the creation of an official, permanent crash monument in Shanksville like those built for past American wars. Riley also analyzes the cultural narratives that evolved in films and in books around the events on the day of the crash and the lives and deaths of its “angel patriot” passengers, uncovering how these representations of the event reflect the myth of the authentic American nation—one that Americans believed was gravely threatened in the September 11 attacks. A profound and thought-provoking study, Angel Patriots unveils how, in the wake of 9/11, America mourned much more than the loss of life.

Book excerpt: In 1972, two pilots—one a federal career engineer, the other the pastor of a prominent church in Washington, D.C.—discovered a common passion for flying airplanes and serving people. One day over lunch, the men conceived a flight plan, one that would undergo many changes before becoming Angel Flight Mid-Atlantic, as it is known today. Ed Boyer of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and Dr. Louis Evans, pastor of the National Presbyterian Church, discussed how to pool their interests and qualifications. From its beginnings as a charitable shuttle service for religious leaders and dignitaries, to full-scale charitable air ambulance operations, to Angel Flights for ambulatory patients, the initial vision has grown into a network of over 1,500 volunteer pilots in the Mid-Atlantic region who use their private planes to fly people in need to specialized treatment. Angel Flight coordinates missions of mercy from its offices in Virginia Beach, helping patients to find “the shortest distance between home and hope.”

Book excerpt: A BOLD NEW STANDARD IN CHRISTIAN SCI-FI: A renegade squadron captain. An ambitious corporate climber. One shaken in his faith, the other in his loyalty. Both on a collision course- with the fate of thousands hanging in the balance. Far from Earth, Far from Home, Captain Dex D'Felco leads the "Angels," a renegade Navy fighter squadron on the run from their own government. Their crime? Clinging to their faith in a dystopian society that has outlawed all forms of religious expression. Meanwhile, Darik Mason, an ambitious junior executive, uncovers a dark conspiracy within his own corporation. His search for the truth sets him on a collision course with the Angels, pitting both sides against each other in an epic climactic battle. In this first book in their Christian sci-fi series Flight of the Angels, co-authors Allan and Aaron Reini introduce a dark, gritty universe where evil men plot destruction while imperfect heroes sacrifice everything to defend the defenseless. Flight of the Angels has been called a big space opera, an exciting military story, engrossing action packed science fiction, and a novel that bucks the conventions of typical Christian fiction. Readers will be drawn into its futuristic dystopian world of high-tech corporate espionage, exciting space battles, exotic locations, and realistic believable characters.

The original Immortals, masters of magic, once reigned over every world in the known universe-until they suddenly vanished. The gods and demons have been fighting over the remains of their fractured empire ever since. Millennia later, new angel Leda, a soldier in the gods' army, is recuperating from her transformation. Her recovery is cut short, however, when a curse strikes New York City, a spell targeted directly at the Legion of Angels. Even as the Legion's soldiers succumb to wrath, jealousy, and fear, the beasts on the plains of monsters are growing in numbers and power. And the longer Leda and her archangel lover Nero investigate these phenomena, the closer they come to the ancient secret that destroyed the Immortals-and that now threatens to tear the Earth apart. Angel's Flight is the eighth book in the Legion of Angels series.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • World War II brings together six remarkable young flight nurses, who face the challenges of war and its many heartbreaks and victories as unsung heroes, in this inspiring novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Danielle Steel. Audrey Parker’s life changes forever when Pearl Harbor is attacked on December 7, 1941. Her brother, a talented young Navy pilot, had been stationed there, poised to fulfill their late father’s distinguished legacy. Fresh out of nursing school with a passion and a born gift for helping others, both Audrey and her friend Lizzie suddenly find their nation on the brink of war. Driven to do whatever they can to serve, they enlist in the Army and embark on a new adventure as flight nurses. Risking their lives on perilous missions, they join the elite Medical Air Evacuation Transport Squadron and fly into enemy territory almost daily to rescue wounded soldiers from the battlefield. Audrey and Lizzie make enormous sacrifices to save lives alongside an extraordinary group of nurses: Alex, who longs to make a difference in the world; Louise, a bright mind who faced racial prejudice growing up in the South; Pru, a selfless leader with a heart of gold; and Emma, whose confidence and grit push her to put everything on the line for her patients. Even knowing they will not achieve any rank and will receive little pay for their efforts, the “Flying Angels” will give their all in the fight for freedom. They serve as bravely and tirelessly as the men they rescue on the front lines, in daring airlifts, and are eternally bound by their loyalty to one another. Danielle Steel presents a sweeping, stunning tribute to these incredibly courageous women, inspiring symbols of bravery and valor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This true story took place in 1982. At the time, Dean was a W1 and stationed in Korea. He had only been graduated from the army's flight program ten months and did not yet possess the flight experience befitting the multiple flight decisions required of this flight. Not only did Dean need to deal with the flight environment but had to come to terms with the unfortunate decision matrix that he used to fly in the first place. Dean quickly realized that he had first to understand his flight conditions before he could modify emergency procedures designed to save his life. To his horror, Dean had never come to grips with the plane crash that killed his father, twin, and two additional passengers fourteen years earlier. That traumatic event was haunting him this day while dealing with the environmental conditions that were trying to kill them all on this flight. The two flights' parallel is uncanny. There is enough background provided to allow the reader a glimpse into the unique and sometimes disastrous Doudna early years. The author does his best to remind the readers that God is the real hero. At every turn, the Holy Spirit whispers solutions, guiding Dean with decisions decades ahead of his ten-month flight experience. There are plenty of human-interest stories scattered throughout the novel to give the reader a rest bit from the life-threatening drama that plays out in the cockpit. Dean continued his career where he served thirty-five years active duty in the army. Upon retirement from the army as a CW5, was selected to be the Government Flight Representative, where he served for another eleven years risk mitigating and approving the maintenance procedures and flights for all of Fort Rucker's 650 helicopters. He retired in 2015 and felt compelled to tell this story.
