Book excerpt: Excerpt from Andover, Massachusetts, in the World War Of the activities to which Mr. Eames referred, only a brief mention can be made in this preliminary summary. On Memorial Day, 1917, the town paid special honor to the veterans of the Civil War, who, more than half a century be fore, had represented Andover in another conflict. For the first time the Home Guard appeared in public review, the comment aroused by their marching being most favorable. In the Town Hall Dr. Claude M. Fuess delivered the oration, laying stress on the inspiration to be drawn from the notable example set by the soldiers of 1861. On June 14, under the auspices Of the Woman's Relief Corps, Flag Day was appropriately Observed, with an eloquent address by the Honorable John N. Cole. The Phillips Academy Commencement, always attended by many townspeople, was marked by the proud announcement Of Principal Stearns that an Andover Ambulance Unit was already overseas. On this occasion, too, a tall flagstaff was raised on the historic training field, where, a century and a half ago, the Andover militia were accustomed to drill, and where General George Washington, sitting on horseback, was welcomed in 1789 by the citizens Of the town. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Racine County in the World War To make clearer some facts of local interest it became necessary to develop the topic of military operations somewhat beyond the lines originally laid down, but it is hoped that this will serve to make the pages the more interesting. The collection of pictures, both of local and general subjects adds a great deal to the value of the work. The story of the civilian war work was taken almost entirely from official records. Names of workers were obtained from those who were empowered to select and publish them. For instance, the names of Liberty Loan workers were obtained from the Chairman of the Liberty Loan Committee and where any question has arisen as to the personnel of the various sub-committees, his list has been referred to as authoritative. For the interesting collection of portraits in the book, the thanks of the entire com munity are due to E. T. Billings, Harry J. Leonard, John A. Hood, G. A. Malme, Julius Pavek, Tom Anderson, I. B. Grant, and, in fact, almost every local photographer for their generous cooperation in selecting and reproducing photographs of former service men. It has been found impossible to give them credit for this in connection with the pictures themselves in every case, and this Opportunity is taken to express my own appreciation and that of the men so generously served. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Winning a Cause, World War Stories Lest We Forget, the first volume of World War stories, gave an outline of the struggle up to the time of the signing of the armistice, November 1918, and contained in general, chronological order most of the stories that to children from ten to sixteen years of age would be' of greatest interest, and give the clearest understanding of the titanic contest. This, the second volume of the same series, contains the stories of the war of the character described, that were not included in Lest We Forget, stories of the United States naval heroes, of the Americans landed in France, of the concluding events of the war, of the visit of President Wilson to Europe, and of the Peace Conference. In a word, emphasis is placed upon America's part in the struggle. This volume should be of even greater interest to American children than the first, for it tells the story of America's greatest achievement, of a nation under taking a tremendous and terrible task not for material gain, but for an ideal. Book excerpt: During the past century the American Anthropological Association (AAA) has borne witness to profound social, cultural, and technical changes, transformations that have affected anthropologists and the people they work with across the planet. In response to such global changes, anthropology continues to evolve into an increasingly complex and sophisticated discipline with a dynamic range of flourishing subfields. This volume contains the memorable stories of the seventy-seven men and women who have led the AAA during the past century. The list of the association's presidents reads like a roster of influential scholars from various specializations within anthropology. Their histories cumulatively reflect the trends in interpretive thought and fieldwork methodology that have emerged during the past ten decades. For each president the book provides a photograph and a biography replete with personal anecdotes, career highlights, and information about his or her contributions to the development of the discipline of anthropology. Important works by each president are listed separately in the back of the volume. An introduction by Regna Darnell and Frederic W. Gleach summarizes the first century of the AAA and contextualizes the individual stories.
