Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Richard Bassett returned from Korea on convalescent leave in 1953, he set down his experiences in training, combat, and captivity. More than 20 years later, hospitalized for acute Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, he once again faced his personal demons. This work expands the memoir to include his post-war struggles with the US government and his own wounded psyche. He describes the shock of capture and ensuing long march to Pyokdong, North Korea, Camp 5 on the Yellow River, where many prisoners died of untreated wounds, disease, hunger, paralyzing cold, and brutal mistreatment in the bitter winter of 1950-51. He recounts Chinese attempts to mentally break down prisoners in order to exploit them for propaganda. He then takes the reader through typical days in a prisoner's life, discussing food, clothing, shelter, and work; the struggle against unremitting boredom; religious, social, and recreational diversions; and even those moments of terror when all seemed lost. It refutes Cold War-era propaganda that often unfairly characterized POWs as brainwashed victims or even traitors who lacked the grit that Americans expected of their brave sons.

Book excerpt: Largely overshadowed by World War II’s “greatest generation” and the more vocal veterans of the Vietnam era, Korean War veterans remain relatively invisible in the narratives of both war and its aftermath. Yet, just as the beaches of Normandy and the jungles of Vietnam worked profound changes on conflict participants, the Korean Peninsula chipped away at the beliefs, physical and mental well-being, and fortitude of Americans completing wartime tours of duty there. Upon returning home, Korean War veterans struggled with home front attitudes toward the war, faced employment and family dilemmas, and wrestled with readjustment. Not unlike other wars, Korea proved a formative and defining influence on the men and women stationed in theater, on their loved ones, and in some measure on American culture. In the Shadow of the Greatest Generation not only gives voice to those Americans who served in the “forgotten war” but chronicles the larger personal and collective consequences of waging war the American way.

Book excerpt: When the exhausted winter wind throws a snowy tantrum, it finds comfort in the friendship of two young children in this lyrical retelling of a Yiddish folktale illustrated with stunning collage. Winter Wind worked hard all season long blowing away leaves, preparing trees for coats of snow and ice. Now, Wind is tired and needs a place to rest. But no one wants to shelter so cold and blustery a Wind--not the townspeople, not the country innkeeper, not even the gnarled tree who is worried about frozen roots. Finally, Wind does what any of us do when we are overtired: Wind has a tantrum. And it is only with the help of two small children brave enough to weather the storm that Wind finally finds the perfect place to sleep. Based on a Yiddish folktale, the gentle language of this seasonal story is coupled with intricate cut-paper collage dioramas tell this sweet tale about empathy and friendship. The visuals in this book are striking for their vibrancy, palette, and movement. A perfect read for a cold, blustery day, or at bedtime with your own sleepy loved ones. Book excerpt: After an eventful trip through Europe and the Middle East, a young expatriate from California lands in the Hindu Kush mountain range of central Afghanistan where he begins an anonymous existence with a nomadic tribe. But when Tony Rice has a chance meeting with another traveler in Kabul, everything is about to change for the American. Mickey Twitch, who was abandoned by his wife in the Iranian desert, has been in Kandahar and Bamian obsessing over what he calls the oracles. Both he and Tony have individually been contemplating the meaning of life and whether it matters. While smoking hashish and sharing stories, the two expatriates form a bond that prompts them to embark on a mystical journey together through pre-Russian invasion Afghanistan and Pakistan. As the riches of hidden tribal culture and the underbelly of politics amid a powerful drug culture are revealed, the men are lured into a web that will lead one of them straight into the heart of the spider. Rich in color and details of a place forever changed, this historical tale chronicles the journey of two expatriates as they travel into and through the tribal zones of Afghanistan and Pakistan.
