Sadie Blue has been a wife for fifteen days. That's long enough to know she should have never hitched herself to Roy Tupkin, even with the baby. Sadie is desperate to make her own mark on the world, but in remote Appalachia, a ticket out of town is hard to come by and hope often gets stomped out. When a stranger sweeps into Baines Creek and knocks things off kilter, Sadie finds herself with an unexpected lifeline...if she can just figure out how to use it. Fans of The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek will love this intimate insight into a fiercely proud, tenacious community and relish the voices of the forgotten folks of Baines Creek. With a colorful cast of characters and a flair for the Southern Gothic, If the Creek Don't Rise is a debut novel bursting with heart, honesty, and homegrown grit. "Like all great southern writers, Leah Weiss's magic turns the local into the universal." —Wiley Cash, New York Times bestselling author, on All The Little Hopes

This death delivered Rita into the care of her aunt Daisy, the last surviving African American widow of a Union soldier and a maverick who had spirited her sharecropping family out of the lynching South and reinvented them as ranch hands and hunting guides out West. But one by one they slipped away, to death or to an easier existence elsewhere, leaving Rita as Daisy's last hope to right the racial wrongs of the past and to make good on a lifetime of thwarted ambition. If the Creek Don't Rise tells how Rita found her way out from under this crippling legacy and, instead of becoming "a perfect credit to her race," discovered how to become herself. Set amid the harsh splendor of the Colorado Rockies, this is a gorgeous, ruthless, and unique account of the lies families live-and the moments of truth and beauty that save us.

Book excerpt: "Will break your heart, but Leah Weiss's beautiful writing will sew it back together again" —Wiley Cash, New York Times bestselling author A Southern story of friendship forged by books and bees, when the timeless troubles of growing up meet the murky shadows of World War II. Deep in the tobacco land of North Carolina, nothing's been the same since the boys shipped off to war and worry took their place. Thirteen-year-old Lucy Brown is precocious and itching for adventure. Then Allie Bert Tucker wanders into town, an outcast with a puzzling past, and Lucy figures the two of them can solve any curious crime they find—just like her hero, Nancy Drew. Their chance comes when a man goes missing, a woman stops speaking, and an eccentric gives the girls a mystery to solve that takes them beyond the ordinary. Their quiet town, seasoned with honeybees and sweet tea, becomes home to a Nazi prisoner-of-war camp. More men go missing. And together, the girls embark on a journey to discover if we ever really know who the enemy is. Lush with Southern atmosphere, All The Little Hopes is the story of two girls growing up as war creeps closer, blurring the difference between what's right, what's wrong, and what we know to be true.

Witty and accessible, Paul Lockhart’s controversial approach will provoke spirited debate among educators and parents alike, altering the way we think about math forever. Paul Lockhart is the author of Arithmetic, Measurement, and A Mathematician’s Lament. The results include the loss of valuable ecosystems, global climate change, and the degradation of the planet's ability to support life. Journalist William Becker argues that our mission in the 21st century should be to fix what we have broken in the natural world and to enlist healthy ecosystems in our pursuit of economic and physical security. Becker begins by sounding an alarm about the inability of the dams and levees we built over the last century to handle the severity of sea-level rise and record floods we see today. The Creeks Will Rise delves into some of the historical and philosophical underpinnings that have led to the climate change situation we now find ourselves in. Becker fearlessly takes on the fossil fuel industry, holding it accountable for the enormous contribution it has made to climate change. He also includes recommendations for solutions as well as specific advice and resources for anyone working toward resolving the climate crisis"--Publisher's website.

Book excerpt: When the Freeman family decided to transform a drainage ditch into a stream that could again nurture salmon, they knew the task would be formidable but the rewards plentiful. Saving Tarboo Creek artfully blends the story of the family's efforts with profound lessons about how we can live more constructive, fulfilling, and natural lives by engaging with the land rather than exploiting it. Based on the land ethic passionately promoted by Susan Leopold Freeman's grandfather, Aldo Leopold, in his influential book A Sand County Almanac, this timely tribute to our natural environment and the urgent need to protect it is destined to be another inspiring classic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Susan Cerulean’s memoir trains a naturalist’s eye and a daughter’s heart on the lingering death of a beloved parent from dementia. At the same time, the book explores an activist’s lifelong search to be of service to the embattled natural world. During the years she cared for her father, Cerulean also volunteered as a steward of wild shorebirds along the Florida coast. Her territory was a tiny island just south of the Apalachicola bridge where she located and protected nesting shorebirds, including least terns and American oystercatchers. I Have Been Assigned the Single Bird weaves together intimate facets of adult caregiving and the consolation of nature, detailing Cerulean’s experiences of tending to both. The natural world is the “sustaining body” into which we are born. In similar ways, we face not only a crisis in numbers of people diagnosed with dementia but also the crisis of the human-caused degradation of the planet itself, a type of cultural dementia. With I Have Been Assigned the Single Bird, Cerulean reminds us of the loving, necessary toil of tending to one place, one bird, one being at a time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE RISE OF THE POARCH BAND OF CREEK INDIANS REVISED EDITION is basically a history of the Creek Indians, leading to the formation of the Poarch Band, the only Federally-recognized Creek tribe in Alabama. The Creek were one of five civilized Native American Tribes located in the Southeastern USA. The book details the activities of the Creek in their movement from Mexico in the 16th Century toward the east, finally setting in what is now the states of Georgia and Alabama. The Creek in Alabama were noted as the Upper Creek and settled mostly along the waterways in Central Alabama in the 18th Century. In the late 18th century, the Europeans came to Creek country, and many males intermarried with women from the Wind Clan of the tribe. These half-breeds (metis as they were called) became noted Creek leaders and were instrumental in building viable and growing communities throughout the central and southern parts of what later became the state of Alabama. The Creek Indian War of 1812-14 aligned Creek against Creek. The warring Creek, known as Red Sticks, were led by Billy Weatherford (Red Eagle) and fought against the U.S. soldiers led by General Andrew Jackson, and those Creek (White Sticks) who remain loyal to the U.S. Government. After the Creek Indian War, many of the Creek who remained loyal to General Jackson and the Federal Government were given land grants of 640 acres of land and settled in and around what today is the Poarch reservation located in Southwest Alabama, near Mobile. Most of the Creek who settled in the Poarch area were not included in the relocation process to the territory of Oklahoma. Known as the "Trail of Tears," more 3,500 Creek Indians lost their lives on the trail west, including the author, Lou Vickery's, fourth generation grandfather, Sam Moniac. The Moniac family was one of the original families to settle first in Creek country... and later in the Poarch area. David Tate Moniac, son of Sam and Lou's fourth generation Uncle, was the first Native American to graduate from the U.S. Military Academy in l822. Chapter 17 details his amazing story. The avid history buff will find Vickery, a former professional baseball player, depiction of Creek history to be a "must" read.

The English language has evolved to embrace a dizzying array of linguistic tools that invite playful minds to introduce ambiguity and innuendo—and hilarity—into common parlance. In See What I’m Saying? Jim Westergard does just that, illustrating idioms with a series of exquisitely detailed engravings. Through these images, Westergard will insist you ‘keep an open mind’ and admonish you not to ‘turn a blind eye’ to the origin and evolution of colloquialisms. His visual interpretations are truly as ‘rare as hens’ teeth’, as he might suggest himself—or he’ll be ‘a monkey’s uncle’.

Cotham colorfully shares a wealth of practical insight about church life in general and pulpit ministry specifically. In Please Don’t Revive Us Again! he presents a unique picture of authentic Christian men and women and the joys, pains, and serendipities they experience along their faith journey. As preaching and teaching minister, Cotham offers a collection of humorous, irreverent, and sometimes sad stories and observations from his long career within one unique Christian tradition. Informative and entertaining, he discusses situations and people culled from church life, ministerial training at a Christian college, and the practical realities of a spiritual vocation. Literally hundreds of fascinating and colorful personalities are named and stories narrated. Containing a delightful mixture of the good, the bad, and the ugly, Please Don’t Revive Us Again! gives insight into the life of a minister and shares the advice and lessons he learned along the way. Some readers may disagree with Cotham’s applications or feel discomfort with some of his stories, but most will find it difficult to put this book down.
