Book Synopsis Graffiti from the Basilica in the Agora of Smyrna by : Roger S. Bagnall
Download or read book Graffiti from the Basilica in the Agora of Smyrna written by Roger S. Bagnall and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2016-10-03 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth archaeological report featuring graffiti found during a recent excavation at the Ancient Greek city of Smyrna. The graffiti published in this richly-illustrated volume were discovered during an excavation of the Roman basilica in the Ancient Greek city of Smyrna, known today as Izmir, which is situated on the Aegean coast of modern Turkey. The project, which began in 2003, has unearthed a multitude of graffiti and drawings encompassing a wide range of subjects and interests, including local politics, nautical vessels, sex, and wordplay. Each graffito artifact holds the potential for vast historical and cultural data, rescued in this volume from the passage of time and razing ambitions of urban development. Given the city’s history, the potential wealth of knowledge to be gleamed from these discoveries is substantial: Smyrna has an uninterrupted history of settlement since the Neolithic–Copper ages, and remains today a major city and Mediterranean seaport at the crossroads of key trade routes. The present volume provides comprehensive editions of the texts, descriptions of the drawings, and an extensive introduction to the subjects of the graffiti, how they were produced, and who was responsible for them. A complete set of color photographs is included.

Book Synopsis Old Smyrna Excavations by : John Manuel Cook
Download or read book Old Smyrna Excavations written by John Manuel Cook and published by Supplementary Volume. This book was released on 1998 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Excavations at the early Greek city of Old Smyrna were carried out jointly by British and Turkish teams. This volume presents a detailed account of the temples themselves, as cleared by the British team. The most important was that under construction c. 610-600 BC, though this was never completed; most of its superstructure apparently ended up in emergency walling, evidently constructed during the siege and sack of the city by Alyattes of Lydia in c. 600 BC. Nevertheless it was already a monumental Aeolic stone temple of superb quality, and it is of the greatest importance for our understanding of the emergence of East Greek architecture. The evidence for its increasingly ambitious predecessors and, mostly more modest, successors is also presented."--Jacket.

Book Synopsis Religious Rivalries and the Struggle for Success in Sardis and Smyrna by : Richard S. Ascough
Download or read book Religious Rivalries and the Struggle for Success in Sardis and Smyrna written by Richard S. Ascough and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, one in a series of books examining religious rivalries, focuses in detail on the religious dimension of life in two particular Roman cities: Sardis and Smyrna. The essays explore the relationships and rivalries among Jews, Christians, and various Greco-Roman religious groups from the second century bce to the fourth century ce. The thirteen contributors, including seasoned scholars and promising newcomers, bring fresh perspectives on religious life in antiquity. They draw upon a wide range of archaeological, epigraphic, and literary data to investigate the complex web of relationships that existed among the religious groups of these two cities—from coexistence and cooperation to competition and conflict. To the extent that the essays investigate how religious groups are shaped by their urban settings, the book also offers insights into the material urban realities of the Roman Empire. Investigating two cities together in one volume highlights similarities and differences in the interaction of religious groups in each location. The specific focus on Sardis and Smyrna is broadened through an investigation of methodological issues involved in the study of the interaction of urban-based religious groups in antiquity. The volume will be of particular interest to scholars and advanced students in Biblical Studies, Classical Studies, and Archaeology.

Book excerpt: The Posthomerica by Quintus of Smyrna, a Greek epic in fourteen books from the 3rd century AD, recounts the story of the Trojan War by covering the events between Hector?s burial and the departure of the Greeks after the destruction of the city. In book 13, we read about the sack of Troy, including famous episodes such as the death of Priam and Astyanax, the enslavement of Andromache, the escape of Aeneas, and the rape of Cassandra.0Stephan Renker offers the first full-scale commentary on Posthomerica 13. He introduces each episode with a discussion of the relevant literary tradition and Quintus' potential models. The following line-by-line commentary yields insights into aspects of language, literary technique, realia, and the main issues of interpretation. Thus, the reader is provided with an important tool for further investigations into this fascinating, yet understudied piece of Imperial Greek poetry.

Book Synopsis The Image of the Jews in Greek Literature by : Bezalel Bar-Kochva
Download or read book The Image of the Jews in Greek Literature written by Bezalel Bar-Kochva and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2016-02-09 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This landmark contribution to ongoing debates about perceptions of the Jews in antiquity examines the attitudes of Greek writers of the Hellenistic period toward the Jewish people. Among the leading Greek intellectuals who devoted special attention to the Jews were Theophrastus (the successor of Aristotle), Hecataeus of Abdera (the father of "scientific" ethnography), and Apollonius Molon (probably the greatest rhetorician of the Hellenistic world). Bezalel Bar-Kochva examines the references of these writers and others to the Jews in light of their literary output and personal background; their religious, social, and political views; their literary and stylistic methods; ethnographic stereotypes current at the time; and more.
