Book Synopsis Medieval Maidens by : Kim M. Philips
Download or read book Medieval Maidens written by Kim M. Philips and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2003-06-28 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The medieval landscape, as viewed through the eyes of scholars, was hardly populated by women. Particularly, young unmarried women or "maidens" have been paid little attention. This book aims to fill that gap by examining the meaning, experiences and voices of young womanhood. The life-phase of “adolescence” was different for maidens than for young men, and as such merits study in its own right. At the same time a study of young womanhood provides insights into ideals of feminine gender roles and identities at different social levels.
Book Synopsis Equally in God's Image by : Julia Bolton Holloway
Download or read book Equally in God's Image written by Julia Bolton Holloway and published by Julia Bolton Holloway. This book was released on 1990 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Equally in God's Image: Women in the Middle Ages is a volume of essays presenting the argument that with the coming of the universities women were excluded, in an apartheid of gender, from education and power. It discusses the resulting paradigm shift from Romanesque to Gothic, describing the images which women had of themselves and which the dominant male society had of them. We meet, in the pages of this book, medieval women in their roles as writers, pilgrims, wives, anchoresses and nuns, at court, on pilgrimage, in households and convents. The volume, as a «Distant Mirror» for ourselves today, seeks to present ways in which women then fulfilled the roles society expected of them and the ways in which they also subverted - through entering into textuality - the expectations of the dominating culture in order to quest identity and equality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jocelin, bishop of Wells (d. 1242), is an iconic figure in his native city of Wells in Somerset, though his career as churchman, courtier and statesman also took him beyond the boundaries of the west country. Coming from a family which had produced bishops over several generations, he played a major role in a developing diocese and mother church, and in the growth of towns, fairs and markets in early thirteenth-century Somerset. He had a crucial influence on the completion of what was to become Wells Cathedral, and on the Bishop's Palace beside it.

Book Synopsis The People of the Parish by : Katherine L. French
Download or read book The People of the Parish written by Katherine L. French and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The parish, the lowest level of hierarchy in the medieval church, was the shared responsibility of the laity and the clergy. Most Christians were baptized, went to confession, were married, and were buried in the parish church or churchyard; in addition, business, legal settlements, sociability, and entertainment brought people to the church, uniting secular and sacred concerns. In The People of the Parish, Katherine L. French contends that late medieval religion was participatory and flexible, promoting different kinds of spiritual and material involvement. The rich parish records of the small diocese of Bath and Wells include wills, court records, and detailed accounts by lay churchwardens of everyday parish activities. They reveal the differences between parishes within a single diocese that cannot be attributed to regional variation. By using these records show to the range and diversity of late medieval parish life, and a Christianity vibrant enough to accommodate differences in status, wealth, gender, and local priorities, French refines our understanding of lay attitudes toward Christianity in the two centuries before the Reformation.
