Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology centers on the visual representation of woman in early modern Latin America, that is, the social and cultural construction and definition of female identity as evidenced by the art document. Artists in this period were collectively aware of a vocabulary of gender that could be tailored to deliver varying messages about the position of women in vice regal culture and society. This volume is organized not in the predictable linear framework, by periods and centuries, but rather by the realization that throughout much of this period, Spanish authorities and others envisaged the Spanish colonies of the Americas in gendered terms. Proffered as the female body, the “New” (virginal by implication) World was at differing times adored, pursued, courted, seduced, defiled, exploited, reviled, and denounced by those (males) who encountered “her.” This mentality is born out in the various forms of female representation that are discussed in this fully illustrated book. Contributors include: C. Cody Barteet, María Elena Bernal-García, Magali M. Carrera, Carol E. Damian, Carolyn Dean, Catherine R. DiCesare, Lori Boornazian Diel, Kelly Donahue-Wallace, Ray Hernandez-Duran, Andrea Lepage, Kellen Kee McIntyre, Penny Morrill, Elizabeth Q. Perry, Richard E. Phillips, Michael J. Schreffler, and Christopher C. Wilson. ERRATUM TO CHAPTER 7 Ray Hernández-Durán, “El Encuentro de Cortés y Moctezuma: The Betrothal of Two Worlds in Eighteenth-Century New Spain” (pp. 181–206). On page 194, second paragraph, third sentence, should read: “Marina’s absence in the encounter painting, where she normally mediates contact between the men, emphasizes the phallogocentric aspect of the historic meeting.” The original phrasing, using the pivotal term, ‘phallogocentric’ (a reference to a gendered form of exchange or communication) was changed to ‘phallus-centered,’ which not only alters a central idea in the argument, but actually has nothing to do with the image in question.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collection of Barbara and Lawrence Fleischman of New York is one of the most important private collections of ancient Greek and Roman art in the United States and among the most important in the world. Composed of approximately three hundred objects from the Bronze Age to the Late Antique, it includes bronze statuettes, marble sculpture, vases, jewelry, lamps and candelabra, keys, weights, and silver bowls and utensils. The Fleischmans have a particular fascination with pieces associated with everyday life in antiquity, since these objects evoke a human connection to the past. They are also drawn to pieces that exemplify the human propensity to transform a functional object into a thing of beauty. Not only has their emotional response to an object’s aesthetic appeal or its historical significance guided them in their forty years of collecting, personal interests have been at work as well. The large number of pieces related to the theater or representing theatrical subjects reflects Barbara Fleischman’s lifelong love of that art. A Passion for Antiquities contains photographs and extensive catalogue entries on the objects included in the exhibition at the J. Paul Getty Museum and the Cleveland Museum of Art. Eighteen contributors provide art historical and descriptive information about each piece. The objects not selected for the exhibition are detailed in a checklist that specifies their origins, dates, media, and sizes. This book is the first major reference on the entire collection, since most of the objects have never before been publicly shown. To facilitate finding specific objects or groups of objects, the book is organized first chronologically and then by medium. Bibliographic sources for each entry cite both publications where the specific work is discussed as well as references to related scholarship. Karol Wight provides a chronological overview of the collection, and Oliver Taplin relates selected pieces to the development of Greek theater. The exhibition of Barbara and Lawrence Fleischman’s collection and this catalogue allow us to enter into their minds and emotions so that, for a time, we can share their passion for antiquities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What can we learn about nationalism by looking at a country’s cultural institutions? How do the history and culture of particular cities help explain how museums represent diversity? Artifacts and Allegiances takes us around the world to tell the compelling story of how museums today are making sense of immigration and globalization. Based on firsthand conversations with museum directors, curators, and policymakers; descriptions of current and future exhibitions; and inside stories about the famous paintings and iconic objects that define collections across the globe, this work provides a close-up view of how different kinds of institutions balance nationalism and cosmopolitanism. By comparing museums in Europe, the United States, Asia, and the Middle East, Peggy Levitt offers a fresh perspective on the role of the museum in shaping citizens. Taken together, these accounts tell the fascinating story of a sea change underway in the museum world at large.

Book excerpt: NORTH AMERICAN BURL TREEN:COLONIAL & NATIVE AMERICANThe practice of utilizing wood for domestic purposes is as old as civilization itself; however, for Europeans the use of burl was not common practice until they became colonists of North America in the 17th century. They learned from the Native Americans, for whom it was a centuries old tradition that treen made from burl (a knotty outgrowth on a tree), with its interlocking grain and strong matter was more durable than plain treen. Unlike in Europe, burls in North America were abundant, cheap, and a practical resource for everyday wares.Today, early burl treen is part of nearly every major Americana and Native Americana collection, yet the subject has largely been neglected in print, leaving most collectors and dealers with only a general understanding of the material. NORTH AMERICAN BURL TREEN: Colonial & Native American is the first comprehensive survey and study of this important historical craft. Culled from museum and private collections, the book includes nearly 200 objects and over 250 full-color images, most never before published.Chapters include:American Colonial Burl Bowls and Service WearThe Patten Family Maple Burl Sugar BowlThe Covered Burl BowlThe Burl MortarAssorted Burl TreenBurl Effigy Bowls of The Woodlands IndiansNative American Burl BowlsNative American Burl Effigy Ladles, Burl Paddles and ScoopsAtlantic White Cedar Burl of The Abenaki
