Book excerpt: In 1968, Joseph is concerned he will be selected in the draft lottery and sent to Army boot camp like his brother-in-law. He left home at the early age of fifteen years old to escape a troubled family life, drug addicted mother and an abusive alcoholic step-father. Before his break away, Joseph and his mother lived for several years moving to different locations for safety. Joseph's living conditions contributed to his dislike of learning, thereby he dropped out of high school and decided to join the Navy to make a better life for himself during the Vietnam Era. His first experiences in boot camp and training are unpleasant reminders of his abusive past but later during this decade of adventures in the Navy, Joseph becomes aware that his journey will be filled with new discoveries and loaded with life choices. He learns from many positive male role models during his travels, but John McCain remains his favorite. He shares a brief romance with an old friend in Barcelona, Spain before he returns to the United States after three long cruises on the USS John F. Kennedy. What life lessons will Joseph discover? Will he make the right decisions? Nearing the end of his enlistment, Joseph decides to leave Jacksonville, Florida and the United States Navy with tremendously more than he started with a decade ago. Married, a college graduate, two daughters and almost a lifetime of choices and education packed into his naval career. Joseph will take his family and experience, move back to New Orleans begin his new civilian life. Joseph still has memories of his painful early years and even has new sorrows from this Navy adventure, but he has a reasonably optimistic view of his future. Many of Joseph's friends and others encouraged him not to leave military service, but he knows the time has come to move on to his many more adventures ahead.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most original and authoritative voice of today's English lexicography presents a fully revised new edition of his beloved usage dictionary When Bryan Garner published the first edition of A Dictionary of Modern American Usage in 1999, the book quickly became one of the most influential style guides ever written for the English language. After four previous editions and over twenty years, our language has evolved in many ways, and the powerful tool of big data has revolutionized lexicography. This extensively revised new edition fully captures these changes, featuring a thousand new entries and over two hundred replacement entries, thoroughly updated usage data and ratios on word frequency based on the Google Ngram Viewer, a more balanced coverage of World Englishes, not just American and British, and the inclusion of gender-neutral language. However, one thing has not changed: in no sense is this a regular dictionary but a masterpiece of lexicography written with wit and personality by one of the preeminent authorities on the English language. To put it in David Foster Wallace's words, Garner's discussion of rhetoric and style still borders on genius. From the (lost) battle between self-deprecating and self-depreciating to the misuse of it's for its, from the variant spelling patty-cake taking over pat-a-cake in American English to the singular uses of they, Garner explains the nuances of grammar and vocabulary and the linguistic blunders to which modern writers and speakers are prone, whether in word choice, syntax, phrasing, punctuation, or pronunciation. His empirical approach liberates English from two extremes: from the purists who maintain that split infinitives and sentence-ending prepositions are malfeasances and from the linguistic relativists who believe that whatever people say or write must necessarily be accepted. The purpose of Garner's dictionary is to help writers, editors, and speakers use the language effectively. And it does so in a playful and persuasive way that will help you sound grammatical but relaxed, refined but natural, correct but unpedantic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Events at Pearl Harbor angered 9th grade English teacher Norman Edward Robinson. At the age of 34 he left his teaching job at the school (in Monmouth, Indiana,) and joined the United States Navy. While he was gone, from 1942-1945 the school held his job open. School officials promised that his teaching job would still be waiting for him when he eventually returned from the war. He traveled with the U.S. Navy as a Pharmacist First Mate to many countries, just a few of them being: Bougainville, Guadalcanal, Hawaii, The New Hebrides, New Zealand, Pago Pago, the Panama Canal, Philippines and Samoa. He participated in training exercises on islands such as: Efati and Espirito Santos prior to being sent to Bougainville. Mate Robinson also served (and wore stars) for his service in the battlefields at both Pivi Village and Pivi forks. The opening Biography section explores the permanent relocation of his entire family from Belfast, Ireland to their new residence located at 2515 E. Riverside Drive in Indianapolis, Indiana. It was in the year of (1910.) It delves deeply into his other immediate family members giving explanations of how their relationships intertwined. Outlines of Normans many educational accomplishments prior to those war years appear. It was his long time girl friend (of 9 years, Mary Katherine Mitchell) that waited so patiently for him to return after W.W. II in Indianapolis, Indiana. You will be reading much more about their bitter/sweet relationship in the later part of the book. This book gives some glimpses interspersed with family stories, pictures, weather conditions and recipes describing the everyday routine daily life of those war years from 1941-1945. Narratives of the letters that flew back and forth with his family members, church friends and neighbors while he was serving are also included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analyzes the films and filmmaking career of director Hal Ashby, placing his work in the cultural context of filmmaking in the 1970s. Hal Ashby directed eleven feature films over the course of his career and was an important figure in the Hollywood Renaissance of the late 1960s and 1970s. Though he was a member of the same generation of filmmakers as Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, and Robert Altman, Ashby has received comparatively little critical or scholarly validation for his work. Author Christopher Beach argues that despite his lower profile, Ashby was an exceptionally versatile and unusually creative director. Beach focuses primarily on Ashby's first seven films--The Landlord, Harold and Maude, The Last Detail, Shampoo, Bound for Glory, Coming Home, and Being There--to analyze Ashby's contributions to filmmaking culture in the 1970s. The first two chapters of this volume provide an overview of Ashby's filmmaking career, as Beach makes the case for Ashby's status as an auteur and provides a biographical survey of Ashby's most productive and successful decade, the 1970s. In the following chapters, Beach analyzes groups of films to uncover important thematic concerns in Ashby's work, including the treatment of a young male protagonist in The Landlord and Harold and Maude, the representation of the U.S. military in The Last Detail and Coming Home, and the role of television and mass media in Shampoo and Being There. Beach also examines the crucial role of the musical score in Ashby's films, as well as the rapid decline of the director's career after Being There. The Films of Hal Ashby is based on Beach's extensive use of unpublished archival materials, as well as a number of interviews with actors, directors, producers, cinematographers, and others involved in the making of Ashby's films. This volume will interest film and television scholars, as well as readers interested in filmmakers of the 1970s.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anchors Aweigh "That isn't merely a story of the Navy: it is a classic." With these words to one very dear I laid down the magazine from which I had read aloud Harriet Welles's story of "The Admiral's Birthday." It was the kind of intimate touch of the love of husband and wife that makes one "teary around the lashes," as Lowell would say. That was my first introduction to the stories of this interpreter of the phase of Navy life that makes Navy people one big family. It is a life of separations and many honeymoons, for "Orders" take the male partners to all corners of the globe. The wife must wait at home while the husband braves the danger of the deep, and latterly the terrors of the submarine stiletto.
