Book excerpt: This book serves as a gateway to the Elementa grammaticae Huronicae, an eighteenth-century grammar of the Wendat (‘Huron’) language by Jesuit Pierre-Philippe Potier (1708–1781). The volume falls into three main parts. The first part introduces the grammar and some of its contexts, offering information about the Huron-Wendat and Wyandot, the early modern Jesuit mission in New France and the Jesuits’ linguistic output. The heart of the volume is made up by its second part, a text edition of the Elementa. The third part presents some avenues of research by way of specific case studies.

Book excerpt: It could easily be argued that body art is more popular now than at any time in history. In days long gone by, sailors were the most heavily tattooed sector of society, but for decades now, that sector is the youth, which is a larger group than those who put to sea. Not only has actual tattooing found a wider demographic, but technology has expanded the methods that can be employed to enhance our bodies. Nowadays, for example, you can get a fake tattoo that will last a couple of days for a special event. In a similar vein, women can be body-painted and the casual observer would be forgiven for not seeing a naked lady. I hope that you will find the information helpful, useful and profitable. It could easily be argued that body art is more popular than at any time in history. This doesn’t work so well for men, for obvious reasons! You can also get fake tans, hair dyes, and nail varnishes that can easily be applied at home. There are also teeth whitening, cheap wigs, and coloured contact lenses available. Not to mention cheap sunglasses and fake glasses of numerous kinds. The ultimate form of body art is plastic surgery. Many ordinary people aspire to plastic cut, tucks and nips these days – it is not only the privilege of the rich and famous. In fact, some countries, like Thailand, offer holidays that include plastic surgery (and other forms), so that your friends will hardly recognise when you return from a month’s holiday! In fact, with all the options for body art available on a typical Western high street, no-one need look the same two days running! The information in this ebook on various aspects of body art and related subjects, such as piercing, body painting and tattoos, is organized into 18 chapters of about 500-600 words each. I hope that it will interest those who like to write a diary and blog, or would like to, plus webmasters who need content for their online publications. So, as an added bonus, I am granting you permission to use the content on your own website or in your own blogs and newsletter, although it is better if you rewrite them in your own words first. Book excerpt: Thisvolumecontainspapersselectedforpresentationatthe6thIAPRWorkshop on Document Analysis Systems (DAS 2004) held during September 8–10, 2004 at the University of Florence, Italy. Several papers represent the state of the art in a broad range of “traditional” topics such as layout analysis, applications to graphics recognition, and handwritten documents. Other contributions address the description of complete working systems, which is one of the strengths of this workshop. Some papers extend the application domains to other media, like the processing of Internet documents. The peculiarity of this 6th workshop was the large number of papers related to digital libraries and to the processing of historical documents, a taste which frequently requires the analysis of color documents. A total of 17 papers are associated with these topics, whereas two yearsago (in DAS 2002) only a couple of papers dealt with these problems. In our view there are three main reasons for this new wave in the DAS community. From the scienti?c point of view, several research ?elds reached a thorough knowledge of techniques and problems that can be e?ectively solved, and this expertise can now be applied to new domains. Another incentive has been provided by several research projects funded by the EC and the NSF on topics related to digital libraries.

Book excerpt: Dudley Pound served for longer on the Chiefs of Staff Committee in wartime than any other serviceman in either of the two World Wars. He was the professional head of the Royal Navy from July 1939 until his resignation, shortly before his death, in August 1943. He had to cope with the problems of Hitler by day and Churchill by night, of trying to make the old ships of the Royal Navy face the challenge of the modern navies of Germany, Italy and Japan.Pound had to run the operational HQ of the Admiralty while also chairing the Chiefs of Staff Committee. As such he was involved in some of the most controversial decisions in the Naval War in Norway 1940, the sinking of the French Fleet, the despatch of The Prince of Wales and Repulse to Singapore, the scattering of convoy PQ17 while, all the while, courageously fighting failing health and enduring huge strain. However by the time of his death the Battle of the Atlantic had been won and the Mediterranean cleared. Churchill's Anchor aims to put Dudley Pound's achievements into context. He held a succession of key commands from a battleship at Jutland to the Mediterranean fleet for four years, alternating with key appointments at the Admiralty. He was at the centre of naval affairs from 1914 until his death in 1943.

It addresses the decision-making process in an honest way, asking readers to consider what a lifetime with a tattoo will be like and what the true reasons behind it are: peer pressure, aesthetics, or something else. From there, it covers more practical considerations, such as age restrictions, where on the body they want the tattoo, size, overall design, proper care, and the removal process if necessary down the road. It truly helps readers think before they ink.

This book was released on 2007-08-13 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mastering InDesign for Print Design and Production shows how experienced professionals with deadlines and billable hours use InDesign efficiently and effectively. Through the case studies and interviews, readers will find inspired to look beyond the over-emphasized basic features and into the depths of InDesign's utility for real-world print design. Most InDesign books are written for beginners, and experienced users are frustrated by them. When you already know how to make, fill, and thread a text box, the entire first half of most InDesign books is useless. But this one doesn't dwell on the basics. Mastering InDesign for Print Design and Production fulfills the promise of the Mastering series, to provide real-world skills to professionals and students. Like all Mastering books, this one includes: A "by pros for pros" approach: The author is an active professional working in the field of graphic arts, layout, and design, writing for professionals who want to improve their skills or learn new skills. Real-world examples: Running throughout the text are examples of how the various skills are applied in real scenarios, described throughout the book in the form of examples and case studies from the author's own design and consulting work, as well as interviews with other designers using InDesign on the job. Skill-based teaching and hands-on exercises Although the book has a comprehensive glossary, page one begins right away speaking to the core market—print professionals—in industry terms about industry challenges. This immediately lets experienced InDesign users know the book is about them. The approach is humorous, making the digestion and retention of complicated information easier for the reader through quips, anecdotes, and design- and print-geek humor. But at all times the book is true to its mission: Helping a professional do their job in InDesign without frustration, confusion, or aesthetic compromise.
