Book excerpt: “[A] clear, sympathetic, but not sentimental description of Italian-American experience from the roots in Italy to settlement in the United States, describing the cultural patterns which crossed the ocean with the emigres and the vicissitudes as well as the progress of the integration of the immigrants and their culture into American society... [an] excellent book... the scholarship and readability of this book make it stand out among others of its kind and it is a contribution to both public understanding and intellectual inquiry.” — Francis A. J. Ianni, Political Science Quarterly “[A] lucid analysis of the twilight of ethnic separateness for Italian-Americans.” — Sandra Schoenberg Kling, American Journal of Sociology “Richard Alba has written an important book... With clarity and precision Alba traces the history and sociology of Italian Americans over the course of the past century and concludes that whereas Italian descent was once a major impediment to inclusion in American social life, it is no longer such an obstacle. Offering a detached, scholarly view of his subject, Alba maintains that ethnic-revival protagonists have misread what in fact was taking place: structural assimilation.” — Salvatore J. Lagumina, The Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science “This short book delivers more than it promises... One might expect an overview of Italian-Americans’ experiences, addressing their origins, migration, reception, and adaptation patterns, in a form appropriate for undergraduate courses on ethnic relations. These predictable subjects are indeed covered, in a readable, accurate account as comprehensive as possible in less than two hundred pages. But what is notable for sociologists outside of the classroom is that this volume does significantly more... the book’s thematic concern is assimilation.” — Eric Woodrum, Social Forces “[A] brief and lucid account of Italian Americans.” — Dino Cinel, The Journal of American History

Book excerpt: The lucid, straightforward Preface of this Handbook by the two editors and the comprehenSIve perspec tives offered in the Introduction by one ofthem leave little for a Foreword to add. It is therefore limIted to two relevant but not intrinsically related points vis-a-vis research on marriage and the family in the interval since the fIrst Handbook (Christensen, 1964) appeared, namely: the impact on this research ofthe politicization of the New RIght! and of the Feminist Enlightenment beginning in the mid-sixties, about the time of the fIrst Handbook. In the late 1930s Willard Waller noted: "Fifty years or more ago about 1890, most people had the greatest respect for the institution called the family and wished to learn nothing whatever about it. . . . Everything that concerned the life of men and women and their children was shrouded from the light. Today much of that has been changed. Gone is the concealment of the way in which life begins, gone the irrational sanctity of the home. The aura of sentiment which once protected the family from discussion clings to it no more .... We wantto learn as much about it as we can and to understand it as thoroughly as possible, for there is a rising recognition in America that vast numbers of its families are sick-from internal frustrations and from external buffeting. We are engaged in the process of reconstructing our family institutions through criticism and discussion" (1938, pp. 3-4).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1980 Census introduced a radical change in the measurement of ethnicity by gathering information on ancestry for all respondents, regardless of how long ago their forebears migrated to America, and by allowing respondents of mixed background to list more than one ancestry. The result, presented for the first time in this important study, is a unique and sometimes startling picture of the nation's ethnic makeup. From Many Strands focuses on each of the sixteen principal European ethnic groups, as well as on major non-European groups such as blacks and Hispanics. The authors describe differences and similarities across a range of dimensions, including regional distribution, income, marriage patterns, and education. While some findings lend support to the "melting pot" theory of assimilation (levels of educational attainment have become more comparable and ingroup marriage is declining), other findings suggest the persistence of pluralism (settlement patterns resist change and some current occupational patterns date from the turn of the century). In these contradictions, and in the striking number of respondents who report no ethnic background or report it incorrectly, Lieberson and Waters find evidence of considerable ethnic flux and uncover the growing presence of a new, "unhyphenated American" ethnic strand in the fabric of national life. A Volume in the Russell Sage Foundation Census Series
