Book excerpt: Fear gripped their souls as the roaring waves of the angry sea relentlessly pounded their ship. Carsten Schuck, clinging to his wife and children, prayed that they would live to see the beautiful new America. Surely God did not bring them this far to drown in the belly of the boat. Thousands of his countrymen had made this journey before him. America was calling him with a chance for freedom, opportunity, territory to explore, and a new beginning for his children with a future full of promise. 'We must survive! God, please keep us safe!' he cried. Little did Carsten know that fleeing to America was just the beginning of the many hardships, heartaches, harsh realities, and tender, rewarding moments that his family would face as they reestablished themselves in a new land. He and his descendants would help forge the way and be a part of creating the greatest country in the world. Based on the true story of coauthor Robert L. Shook's ancestors, A Journey in Courage captures the incredible legacy of the Schuck family, a family connected by their faith in God and their deep love for their country and one another. This fascinating account will treat you to a remarkable three-dimensional trip through time and leave a lasting impression on your heart.

Book Synopsis Mutiny on the Amistad by : Howard Jones
Download or read book Mutiny on the Amistad written by Howard Jones and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1997-11-20 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the first full-scale treatment of the only instance in history where African blacks, seized by slave dealers, won their freedom and returned home. Jones describes how, in 1839, Joseph Cinqué led a revolt on the Spanish slave ship, the Amistad, in the Caribbean. The seizure of the ship by an American naval vessel near Montauk, Long Island, the arrest of the Africans in Connecticut, and the Spanish protest against the violation of their property rights created an international controversy. The Amistad affair united Lewis Tappan and other abolitionists who put the "law of nature" on trial in the United States by their refusal to accept a legal system that claimed to dispense justice while permitting artificial distinctions based on race or color. The mutiny resulted in a trial before the U.S. Supreme Court that pitted former President John Quincy Adams against the federal government. Jones vividly recaptures this compelling drama--the most famous slavery case before Dred Scott--that climaxed in the court's ruling to free the captives and allow them to return to Africa.

Book Synopsis Lands of Our Ancestors by : Gary Robinson
Download or read book Lands of Our Ancestors written by Gary Robinson and published by No Series Linked. This book was released on 2016-09-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historical novel tells the story of a twelve-year-old Chumash boy and his family who become captives in a California Spanish mission sometime more than 200 years ago. This is historical fiction based entirely on historical fact that reveals the devastating impact the missions had on California Native peoples. Written for fourth, fifth and sixth graders, the story ends on a hopeful note as a small group of Native children are able to escape their captors and begin a journey to join other Native escapees in a remote mountain village. As mandated by the California Department of Education, every 4th grader is taught the "Mission Unit," which perpetuates the "idyllic mission myth" that glorifies the priests, denigrates California Indians and fails to mention that Indians were actually treated as slaves held captive by a Spanish colonial institution. The manuscript has been reviewed and approved by the Director of the Santa Ynez Chumash Culture Department and a member of the California American Indian Education Oversight Committee. It has the endorsement of a fourth grade teacher in California who has shared the story with her class and a local librarian who is excited about sharing the story with elementary age children through the library. It has also been endorsed by the local library branch manager and a former professor of Anthropology within the University of California system.
Book Synopsis Ladder to the Light by : Steven Charleston
Download or read book Ladder to the Light written by Steven Charleston and published by Broadleaf Books . This book was released on 2021-01-05 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Darkness will not last forever. Together we can climb toward the light. They were as troubled as we, our ancestors, those who came before us, and all for the very same reasons: fear of illness, a broken heart, fights in the family, the threat of another war. Corrupt politicians walked their stage, and natural disasters appeared without warning. And yet they came through, carrying us within them, through the grief and struggle, through the personal pain and the public chaos, finding their way with love and faith, not giving in to despair but walking upright until their last step was taken. My culture does not honor the ancestors as a quaint spirituality of the past but as a living source of strength for the present. They did it and so will we. In the same voice that has comforted and challenged countless readers through his daily social media posts, Choctaw elder and Episcopal priest Steven Charleston offers words of hard-won hope, rooted in daily conversations with the Spirit and steeped in Indigenous wisdom. Every day Charleston spends time in prayer. Every day he writes down what he hears from the Spirit. In Ladder to the Light he shares what he has heard with the rest of us and adds thoughtful reflection to help guide us to the light Native America knows something about cultivating resilience and resisting darkness. For all who yearn for hope, Ladder to the Light is a book of comfort, truth, and challenge in a time of anguish and fear.
