Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anatomy and Physiology of the Nervous System The preparation of this work has been undertaken in response to what experience in the class-room has shown to be the need of a text-book especially adapted to beginners - a book giving, by itself, a concise, but complete, presentation of the physiology of the nervous system, together with the more important features of its anatomy. In dealing with the physiological phase of the subject, it has seemed best, viewed from the students standpoint, to confine the statements mostly to the established and generally recognized facts, leaving the numerous theories - fully and admirably discussed in many contemporary works - to be taken up at a later stage of the study, after the facts have been acquired and mastered, this plan, it is found, being the most effective as a time-saver, and resulting in the clearest and most lasting impressions. The anatomical matter included in the volume is only that which seems most necessary fox an intelligent understanding of the physiology, and of the most frequent service in clinical work, the general text-book on anatomy always being available for further details. Both the structure and the various functions of the sympathetic system have been set forth with a fullness commensurate with their importance. Of the whole work condensation has been the guiding principle. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nervous System: An Elementary Handbook of the Anatomy, and Physiology of the Nervous System, for the Use of Students of Psychology and Neurology The steadily increasing application of physiological facts to problems in psychology, and the rapid development of the science of experimental psychology, have rendered it essential that the student of psychology should possess some knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the nervous system of man. There are excellent articles on these in most of the recent textbooks of anatomy or of physiology, but generally the information is too detailed, and further, the student must of necessity purchase the complete book to acquire the desired article. In this small textbook an attempt has been made to present the essential features of the anatomy and physiology of the nervous system in a form sufficiently simple to be understood by a non-medical student. At the same time it is hoped that it will prove useful, as an introductory handbook, for students of medicine, or for those who desire to refresh their memories of the central tracts, in considering cases of neurological interest. The book makes no pretence of dealing with the application of the subject either to psychology or to neuro-pathology. It has been compiled from many sources but, obviously, it is impossible to acknowledge these individually. Most of the diagrams have been taken from 'Grays Anatomy' (17th edition) and a few from 'Quain's Anatomy' (11th edition), by the courtesy of the editors and publishers of these works. The other diagrams are either original or are modifications of well-known figures. The author desires to acknowledge with gratitude the great help he has received from Professor Howden, Professor of Anatomy in the University of Durham, under whose supervision the book has been written. He is also greatly indebted to Professor Robinson, Professor of Logic and Psychology in the University of Durham, who has kindly read over the MSS. and has generally defined the scope of the work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nervous System, and Its Conservation There are several excellent books devoted to the anat omy of the nervous system, there are others which treat of its physiology in an illuminating way, and others still which deal with its hygiene. If the present volume is not to be an impertinence, it must be justified by its attempt to combine some elements of the three. The intention has been to present no more anatomy than is essential to an appreciation of the correlated physiology and to subordinate the physiology, in its turn, to the teaching of hygiene. In the chapters which deal with structure and func tion the writer has tried to gather his material from authoritative sources. In those occupied more largely with hygiene, personal judgments have doubtless found expression. But the desire has been not so much to dictate in a dogmatic spirit as to open important mat ters to fuller discussion. The theme of our remarks therefore will be those internal springs of action, on the particular and various activity of which, the motion of the machine depends, the nerves and the spinal marrow, the brain. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anatomical, Phylogenetical and Clinical Studies on the Central Nervous System As a representative of Dutch neurology I have given my lectures, based on the anatomy and the physiology of the nervous system. Many of us in Holland work along this line. I know that not a few of my explanations in my lectures were hypothetical and that many facts might be differently interpreted. But in preparing these Herter lectures I felt that it was not Wise to limit myself to bring facts, found by my research work. My American colleagues did not ask me to come to Baltimore to hear only some objective facts. They desired also to get an impression of my per sonality. A personality is always dualistic, good and bad. This psychological fact is not always clear, but is always true. My ideas may be right or wrong, in any case they are part of my personality, for I believe in them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of the Nervous System The mind evidently is connected with the nervous system on the one hand, while the contractile and sensitive parts are connected with it on the other. It may fairly be presumed then, that the inmost powers of the physical system are to be sought for in the nervous centres, and the nerves proceeding from them. It is there fore thought advisable to present a concise view of the anatomy and physiology of the nervous system, as an introduction to a con sideration of the diseases incident to it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from d104-Book of Anatomy and Physiology for Nurses That this revision has been accomplished with, I trust, success, is almost entirely owing to the kind assistance given me by Mr. T. Pickering Pick, and by Percy M. Dawson, M.D., Assistant Professor Of Physiology in the Johns Hopkins Uni versity, Baltimore. To the latter I am indebted for the whole recasting, and in large measure rewriting, of the chapter on the Nervous System, and also, to a slighter extent, Of Chapters I. And XIX. Indeed, so greatly is this revision the work Of Dr. Dawson that I should have been glad, had I been allowed, to place his name with mine on the title-page. The chapter on the Nervous System has been transferred to its usual position in such text-books, namely, following the chapter on Muscles, but it is, of course, possible for those who prefer the Old arrangement to take this chapter later in the course Of study. A number Of new drawings have been made specially for this edition, including ten original ones by Dr. Dawson; also, to all the weights and measures, according to the English System, have been added their equivalents in the Metric System. It should be noted that the calculations are based upon the standard Of weights and measures adopted by the United States, and not upon those Of the British Pharmacopeia. Concessions to the truth Of their observations poured in upon them from all quarters slowly, indeed, but with a steady and increasing progress. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Diseases of the Nervous System In the presentation of the individual diseases, their diagnosis and pathology have been especially dwelt upon, the writer being of the firm opinion that treatment and general therapeutics are absolutely valueless - sometimes positively dangerous - in the absence of a cor rect or approximately correct diagnosis. Neurology's hardest prob lems are in the diagnostic sphere. Given a correct diagnosis, the treat ment is generally a very simple affair. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrations of the Comparative Anatomy of the Nervous System The Author having had frequent occasions for referring to Comparative Anatomy during the progress of his publications on the Nervous System, lie conceived that representations of his dissections might interest many, and especially assist those who were about to enter upon similar pursuits. But, on so comprehensive a subject, it became difficult to determine upon an arrangement that would make a work concise and useful. After much consideration, it appeared probable that this intention would he in a great measure answered by selecting such examples as would explain the scheme on which the nervous system is generally founded; for thus its practical investigation would he facilitated, and the extension of knowledge promoted in the best and most efficient manner. It is desirable that researches by actual dissection should be encouraged as much as possible, as thus only can the prospective advantages of science be consulted. If books be entirely confided in, all improvement must atop. These ought, therefore, to be esteemed as mere helps towards that perfection, which can only he approached by the active perseverance of individuals through progressive ages.
