Book excerpt: Our society is faced with an increasing dependence on computing systems, not only in high tech consumer applications but also in areas (e.g., air and railway traffic control, nuclear plant control, aircraft and car control) where a failure can be critical for the safety of human beings. Unfortunately, it is accepted that large digital systems cannot be fault-free. Some faults may be attributed to inaccuracy during the development, while others can come from external causes such as environmental stress. Radiations, electromagnetic interference and power glitches are some of the most common causes of transient faults. As a consequence, the past years have seen a growing interest in methods for studying the behaviour of computer-based systems when faults occur, and several approaches have been proposed to evaluate the dependability properties of a computer-based system. Fault Injection, i.e., the artificial injection of faults into a computer system in order to study its behaviour, emerged as a viable solution, and has been deeply investigated by both academia and industry. Different techniques have been proposed and some of them practically experimented. Fault Injection Techniques and Tools for Embedded Systems Reliability Evaluation intends to be a comprehensive guide to Fault Injection techniques used to evaluate the dependability of a digital system. The description and the critical analysis of different Fault Injection techniques and tools will be authored by key scientists in the field of system dependability and fault tolerance.

Book excerpt: This atlas is the result of research involving over 3,000 patients consecutively recruited since 2004. Clinical practice gives the opportunity to observe many more Aβ axonal lesions (axonotmesis) than transections (neurotmesis), consequently the mapped hypo aesthetic territories are partial. Therefore, the authors define for each cutaneous nerve branch, the autonomous territory and the boundary markers of the largest territory of cutaneous origin. Each anatomical chart of a cutaneous branch is the superposition of tens, even hundreds of observations seen in clinical practice – based on 3,133 maps of observed cutaneous hypoaesthetic territories. The data collected has also been cross-referenced with that published in nearly 100 other anatomy books. This 1st English edition – based on the 3rd French edition published by Sauramps Medical – illustrates the usefulness of anatomical knowledge for clinical practice. More precisely, it seeks to demonstrate how these topographic elements can offer valuable support, both for the clinical anamnesis, and for the clinical examination of neuropathic pain patients. This atlas is at the crossroads between the medical and rehabilitation disciplines. Accordingly, it addresses the needs of medical doctors, from GPs to specialists, and of pain therapists, and offers a valuable asset for all health professionals who are dedicated to the management of pain and associated problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the anatomy of the peripheral nervous system. Using the latest 3D-computer graphic modeling techniques, the author developed the innovative NEURO 3D LOCATORTM concept, which provides 3D in-vivo ultrasound images of peripheral nerve architectures, allowing readers to develop a mental real-time 3D GPS of the peripheral nervous system. This new edition is an extended version of the “Student edition” dedicated to Experts and is divided into three main parts: The first part describes fundamental concepts, from immunohistochemistry to limb innervation, and includes a detailed evaluation of the morphofunctional anatomy of the peripheral nerves. It also presents relevant data on neuromuscular transmission, from both classic and recent literature, to enable readers to gain an understanding the physiology and pathology of peripheral nerves as well as the prospects of repair. The second section addresses the upper limb, the brachial plexus and related peripheral nerves, while the third section focuses on the lower limb, the lumbosacral plexus and related peripheral nerves. By providing MRI sections related to the drawings and the descriptions of main nerve injuries, it facilitates radiological interpretation and clinical learning. The book also features detailed descriptions of surgical approaches and the ultrasound anatomy of the limbs, and includes supplementary material on applications to peripheral nerve stimulation, surgical procedures and interventional pain medicine techniques. Presenting high-quality 3D videos showing the progression of the ultrasound probe in real-time, synchronized with live ultrasound views and enhanced with anatomical computerized graphic layers, as well as over 500 outstanding full-color 2D and 3D illustrations, and access to than 100 practical videos, this unique book is a valuable resource for anesthesiologists, radiologists, orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, neuromodulators, physiatrists, pain physicians and rheumatologists. It will also appeal to the medical community in general.

Book excerpt: Utilizing clear text and explanatory artwork to make clinical neuroanatomy and neuroscience as accessible as possible, this newly updated edition expertly integrates clinical neuroanatomy with the clinical application of neuroscience. It's widely regarded as the most richly illustrated book available for guidance through this complex subject, making it an ideal reference for both medical students and those in non-medical courses. Complex concepts and subjects are broken down into easily digestible content with clear images and concise, straightforward explanations. Boxes within each chapter contain clinical information assist in distilling key information and applying it to likely real-life clinical scenarios. Chapters are organized by anatomical area with integrated analyses of sensory, motor and cognitive systems, and are designed to integrate clinical neuroanatomy with the basic practices and clinical application of neuroscience. Opening summaries at the beginning of each chapter feature accompanying study guidelines to show how the chapter contents apply in a larger context. Core information boxes at the conclusion of each chapter reinforce the most important facts and concepts covered. Bulleted points help expedite study and retention. Explanatory illustrations are drawn by the same meticulous artists who illustrated Gray’s Anatomy. Student Consult eBook version included with purchase. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite all recent advances, the most important progress in neuroradiol ogy has been in our knowledge of the anatomy of the nervous system. DANDY'S injection of ventricles and cisterns with air, SICARD'S studies of the epidural and subarachoid space with lipiodol, MONIZ'S work on cerebral arteries and veins, and, more recently, DJINDJIAN'S and DI CHIRO'S investiga tions of spinal arteries, have modified, refined and expanded current knowl edge of anatomy of the central nervous system. As described by LINDGREN, "the neuroradiologist dissects the region of interest with x-rays like a surgeon with a scalpel". In fact, neuroradiologic examination is nothing less than an anatomic survey in vivo, using multiple orthogonal projections. The authors of this book are convinced that frequent reference to normal anatomy is currently the most useful and rewarding means of understanding neuroradiologic problems. Arteries and veins of the brain may be considered in terms of the sulci, gyri, cisterns, ventricles, basal nuclei, and cortical centers. In this book, efforts have been made to match anatomic elements of the ventricles, cisterns, and vessels to the region being studied. The foundation of this book lies in the detailed anatomico-radiologic corre lations, demonstrated by numerous photographs of dissected specimens, radiographs of injected specimens, anatomic drawings, diagrams, and normal cerebral angiograms and encephalograms. Indeed, there is no region in the central nervous system which cannot be delineated by its relationships with arteries, veins, cisterns, and ventricles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Motility, relating to the vital energy of the human tissues, is a basic concept in osteopathy. This book presents a simple and systematic definition of motility, based on the movement of all of the body's structures during embryogenesis. Those initial movements, intrinsic to the energy of the tissues, are the essence of motility and, as such, they are crucial to the tissues' normal movement. These fundamental ideas expand the osteopath's clinical intervention techniques and deepen the understanding of both the bases of osteopathy and of human functions. Illustrated in two colours with clear and original line drawings and photographs, this book offers the new model of practice developed by Alain Auberville over his 30 years of experimentation and teaching; it is presented here by Andree Aubin, who has linked Alain Auberville's approach to classic osteopathic concepts in order to facilitate its integration into regular clinical practice.
