Yes, absolutely, that is the best way to get a tale. But, it isn't nearly as easy to do as you might think. So, very frequently, I have to research folk tale collections to get the perfect story for me to rewrite. For reasons that I'll never understand, my trip to Jamaica was rescheduled over and over (five times!) in a process that lasted more than a year. I really wasn't sure if I was ever going to make it to that corner of the Caribbean. But, when I finally set foot in Kingston, I not only had a very entertaining story written, but the book was hot off the press! In the tale, Spider wants to get his pig across a creek. And, since he's Spider, he wants to do it for free. As the story progresses, a variety of characters pass by the creek. Each of them was threatened if they didn't help. At one point, a butcher -- ready to slice up a bull -- asks, "Would you like one patty or two?" When I wrote that line, of course, I thought about beef patties for a hamburger. I mean, what else could it mean? Well, the word "patty" means something entirely different in Jamaica. It's a flaky pastry that is stuffed with a variety of deliciousness. That goodness could include chicken, jerk chicken, cheese, shrimp, tuna, spinach, vegetables, and of course, beef. I guess you can always make them at home, but in Jamaica, it seems to be perfectly acceptable to get your patties at a local fast food place called Tastee. You can get them at other shops, but it is common knowledge that you should go to Tastee. In fact, after the lesson, it's where I went to eat patties with my students.

Sometimes, the tricks backfire and there is a lesson to be learned. It this particular tale, Spider's goal is to get his new market pig across the creek and to his home. It's a task easier said than done. The first spider stories that I gathered were when I served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Liberia. At the time, I never thought about the very same stories coming on to the New World with slaves from Africa. Of course, that happened. This tale was inspired by a trip to Jamaica that was meant to be. My mural project was delayed several times, but it just had to happen. Spider tales brought from Africa to the New World have a special place in my heart. And, I've learned that people of all ages enjoy a good story. When I painted two murals with the United States Embassy in Jamaica, I had the very good fortune of being teamed up with Greg Bailey, a Jamaican artist and professor from the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts in Kingston.Greg taught a muraling class at the college. I came to share with his students how my murals have taken me around the world. During that session, I told this Jamaican tale with his class as well as a spider story from my days in Africa. It appears that my stories are as successful with college students as they are with elementary students. Perhaps it's how I tell them? Afterwards, the college art students joined Greg and me in painting two community murals in the Kingston area. It was a wonderful introduction to a tropical island that I had somehow missed in all of my world travels. And, when I think of Jamaica, I have the warmest feelings to accompany that tropical sunshine.

In Jamaica, the clever spider Anansi, who outsmarts stronger animals, is a symbol of triumph by the weak over the powerful. The fables of the foolish Juan Bobo, who tries to bring milk home in a burlap bag, illustrate facets of traditional Puerto Rican life. Conflict over status, identity and power is a recurring theme--in a story from Trinidad, a young bull, raised by his mother in secret, challenges his tyrannical father who has killed all the other males in the herd. One in a series of folklore reference guides by the author, this volume shares summaries of 438 tales--some in danger of disappearing--retold in English and Creole from West African, European, and slave indigenous cultures in 24 countries and territories. Tales are grouped in themed sections with a detailed subject index and extensive links to online sources.

Book excerpt: Anansi the Spiderman or rather spider and man originated with the Ashanti people of present day Ghana. Anansi's father, the Sky God Nyame, got so tired of his son's pranks that he turned him into a spider. The stories of Anansi were brought to the Caribbean by slaves, some of whom kept up the oral tradition of their people by recounting some event in the life of their village. The stories also included some folklore such as the life and times of Anansi, the trickster. Accordingly Anansi is described as a creature who was always trying to best anyone with whom he came in contact. The general idea for him was that although small he could outsmart creatures much bigger than himself. This is actually a lesson for us that we should depend on brain power rather than the physical. Anansi took pride in this and sometimes came out on top but sometime things went badly for him. When he was victorious he was “The Man” but during the bad times he became the spider and retreated to his web to hide and wait for more opportunities to outsmart his friends. My granddaughter, Mikailah, is so enamored with Anansi, “The Man” that she only wants to hear stories in which he is victorious in tricking other creatures. She calls him “Nancy”. Her favorite story is about Anansi and Brer Tiger in which Anansi was “sick” and got Brer Tiger to take him to the doctor…
