Book Synopsis Word, Sound, Image by : Saskia Kersenboom
Download or read book Word, Sound, Image written by Saskia Kersenboom and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-08-25 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This original and radical book challenges dominant parameters of literacy by comparing the oral tradition of the Tamils in South India with the Western culture of printed text. In India, traditional texts are always performed; as a result, form and meaning can change depending on the occasion. This is the opposite of Western communication through publication which is a static representation of knowledge. The author examines the reasons for the differences between the Indian and Western textual traditions, and describes how text lives through the performing arts of words, sound and imagery. She argues that interactive multimedia is the first Western communication form to represent oral traditions effectively.
Book Synopsis Temple Imagery from Early Mediaeval Peninsular India by : Archana Verma
Download or read book Temple Imagery from Early Mediaeval Peninsular India written by Archana Verma and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analyzing the ways in which ideas of heroic discourse and the socio-religious and political needs of the period moulded iconography, this book explores the evolution of the iconography of the early mediaeval Hindu temples of the Indian peninsula, over the course of the sixth-twelfth centuries C.E. In order to study the socio-religious and political atmosphere in which the early mediaeval temple iconography grew and developed its specific forms, the author makes use of the inscriptions, archaeological and the literary materials ranging from the fourth centuries B.C.E. to the thirteenth century C.E., as these give an idea of the continuities and discontinuities in the ideas of heroic and political discourses which lie at the back of the visual art forms that they created. Of particular interest are the royal charters, issued in Sanskrit and Tamil, the religious narratives from the Sanskrit epics and the Puranas, iconographic canons that form a part of the religious texts known as the Agamas, written in Sanskrit, the court literature of the early mediaeval period and the early historical Sangam Tamil literature, apart from the archaeological material from the Indian peninsula. The author focuses particularly on exploring the ideas of power current in the society that created the narrative iconography of the period and the region studied.

Book Synopsis Colonial Visions, Postcolonial Revisions by : Shanthini Pillai
Download or read book Colonial Visions, Postcolonial Revisions written by Shanthini Pillai and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2008-12-18 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers reflections of the representations of the Indian diaspora of Malaysia according to two spectrums, colonial and postcolonial. It takes seed from the belief that any engagement with the Indian diasporic experience in Malaysia must take into account the role of the pioneer Indian immigrants who carved the niche of existence for the overseas Indian on Malayan soil. It begins by tracing their presence within the terrain of colonial narratives to uncover, not only the ways in which they were subordinated to colonial ideological discourses but also, and more significantly, the suppressed story of coolie resistance that lies under the weight of such masks of conquest. It then moves on to show how postcolonial revisioning is able to reconstruct the Indian immigrants of Malaya as choreographers of the diasporic identity that they have left as the most significant legacy for contemporary Malaysian Indians. This book ultimately reveals the politics of Malaysian Indian identity from colonised to globalised grounds, and the ways in which the subaltern spaces of the former can be reclaimed and reterritorialised in the latter.

Book Synopsis Bharata Natyam by : Anne-Marie Gaston
Download or read book Bharata Natyam written by Anne-Marie Gaston and published by Manohar Publishers and Distributors. This book was released on 1996 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bharata Natyam is currently one of the most popular styles of classical dance in India. It is also well known world-wide. Certain components of this dance have historical associations with religious ritual in the temples of south India. In the course of its transition from performance in temples and courts to the concert stage, the making of modern Bharata Natyam has passed from the purview of traditional/hereditary families, and dancers into the hands of the educated elite. What changes have been brought about in presentation and style as a result of this transition? Although current dancers and teachers make claims for the antiquity of their art, and the authenticity of the tradition, what was the dance of the hereditary practitioners, the devadasis, really like? How much of current practice is an invention of the past fifty years? These and other questions on the fascinating history of the creation of Bharata Natyam are dealt with by Anne-Marie Gaston who provides extensive oral testimony of current perceptions and directions of Bharata Natyam. This illuminating account of how both hereditary and non-hereditary dancers, teachers and critics view the evolution of Bharata Natyam provides a critique of the place of Bharata Natyam in Indian society and of the concept of traditional' in late twentieth-century India.
