This book was released on 1998 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The heuristic is developed from the Swap Tabu Search concept by finding all neighborhood sequences of the initial sequence in each iteration. Using randomly generated data, the solution generated by the heuristic is compared to the optimal solution for small-scale problems. Since this type of traveling salesman problem is a NP-hard problem, for large-scale problems, the heuristic is compared against the nearest neighbor and local search heuristics. Empirical results show that the heuristic in this study is a promising method of solving this special type of school bus routing and scheduling problem in terms of quality of results and the execution times.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The school bus routing problem (SBRP) is a central issue in transportation planning and optimization systems. SBRP seeks to plan an efficient schedule for a fleet of school buses where each bus picks up students from various bus stops and delivers them to their designated schools while satisfying various constraints such as the bus capacity. Due to its complexity, many heuristics have been proposed to solve this combinatorial problem in an effective way. In this book, geographic information systems (GIS)-based decision-making framework that combines GIS, clustering techniques, network cutting techniques, and a hybrid ant colony optimization metaheuristic with the iterated Lin-Kernighan local improvement heuristic is proposed for solving the SBRP as a split delivery vehicle routing problem (SDVRP). Experiments were conducted for evaluating the proposed framework by comparing the results from it and Arc-GIS 9.2 Network Analyst which uses the greedy Dijkstra's algorithm. The reported results of the proposed framework generally outperform that of the ArcGIS. IIn addition, the proposed decision-making framework was applied to solve a real life SBRP to demonstrate its application.

Book Synopsis The Cost Effectiveness of Multiple Routing Versus Single Routing of School Buses by : Charles Thomas Toler
Download or read book The Cost Effectiveness of Multiple Routing Versus Single Routing of School Buses written by Charles Thomas Toler and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purpose. It was to determine which of three strategies of routing is the most effective based on selected geographic, management, and cost factors. Methodology. The data were analyzed from 444 K-12 Missouri public school districts providing regular student transportation for the 1994-95 school year. The three independent variables were Tier One (one bus per one route), Tier Two (one bus for more than one route and up to and including two routes), and Tier Three (one bus for more than two routes). The eleven dependent variables were a select set of geographic (area, average daily transported, area density, and number of attendance centers), management (number of regular bus routes, route length, linear density, and district eligible miles), and cost factors (cost per mile, cost per pupil mile, and cost per pupil per day). Data were subjected to descriptive statistical analysis, one-way analysis of variance, and Scheffe's method of post hoc comparison. Results. (1) Significant differences at the.001 level were found among the means for the three independent variables in all areas. (2) Post hoc comparisons found significant differences at the.01 level for all variables except for area and cost per pupil per day. Conclusions. (1) A district's land area can dictate routing strategy. (2) Districts with greater land area show up to be more cost efficient in terms of cost per mile and cost per pupil mile under the current Missouri transportation formula. (3) There is a difference in the means between cost per mile and cost per pupil mile versus cost per pupil per day. (4) Cost per pupil per day may be an alternative factor that warrants consideration.

Book excerpt: Many transport companies face problems in regulating their transport services due to various challenges and issues. These problems affect the quality of the services provided especially in a university campus environment, where students heavily depend on the university transport services for their daily commuting. What are the problems faced by the management of the campus transport company? What are the issues raised by the drivers operating the on-campus buses? Hence, in assisting the management of the transport company the authors have identified the inefficiency of their bus driver scheduling system as one of the main problems, which needed to be tackled. For that reason, the authors developed an efficient bus driver scheduling model based on the Genetic Algorithm (GA) approach. The GA model is able to provide some resolutions and insight in relation to these inquiries: What are the constraints being considered in this bus driver scheduling problem? - How were the drivers’ break times being distributed in this GA approach? - How was the time taken to generate an efficient schedule? - For more information please visit: http://uumpress.uum.edu.my/
