Book excerpt: Today’s high school student faces several complex experiences that impact his or her decision to stay in school. These factors, often a culmination of school events beginning in the elementary years, are correlated to a student’s likelihood of graduating from high school. Moreover, students with disabilities face additional factors that impact the likelihood of completing high school. Students with disabilities are less likely to earn a college degree, more likely to be underemployed or on public assistance, earn less income, and have higher rates of incarceration after leaving school. Not surprisingly, students with learning disabilities drop out at higher rates when compared to their non- disabled peers. This dissertation addresses the current state of the dropout phenomenon among students with learning disabilities. It examines the early school experiences that students with learning disabilities face in order to add qualitative data to the existing quantitative research that studies students with learning disabilities who drop out. This dissertation utilized a semi-structured interview protocol and a review of student and school records and solicited the input of eight study participants at one traditional high school in Southern California. Findings resulted in identifying four of the eight students as “At-risk” for school failure, and they were grouped accordingly. Students were asked questions related to their elementary, middle and high school experiences with relation to potential graduation outcomes. The Student Voice Theory guided the theoretical framework of this study. It was supported by a secondary framework, the Self Determination Theory, which guided the findings addressing the study sub-questions. The results of the study concluded with three major themes addressing the research question and two major themes addressing the sub-questions. Findings within the themes resulted in subthemes within the themes. Overwhelmingly, the study results indicated relational experiences as being paramount to a student’s success, or perceived success, in high school. Additional findings indicated that students found school transitions and peer relationships to be salient factors in their success. Students in the “At-risk” cohort identified additional factors, learning difficulties and negative school transitions, as being significant. Findings resulted in the need for a success model to address the prevalent factors necessary to ensure high school completion for students who are learning disabled, and for those who are at-risk for failure.

The Committee on Educational Excellence and Testing Equity (CEETE) was formed to monitor the effects of education reform, particularly testing, on students at risk for academic failure because of poverty, lack of proficiency in English, disability, or membership in population subgroups that have been educationally disadvantaged. The committee recognizes the important potential benefits of standards-based reforms and of test results in revealing the impact of reform efforts on these students. The committee also recognizes the valuable role graduation tests can potentially play in making requirements concrete, in increasing the value of a diploma, and in motivating students and educators alike to work to higher standards. At the same time, educational testing is a complicated endeavor, that reality can fall far short of the model, and that testing cannot by itself provide the desired benefits. If testing is improperly used, it can have negative effects, such as encouraging school leaving, that can hit disadvantaged students hardest. The committee was concerned that the recent proliferation of high school exit examinations could have the unintended effect of increasing dropout rates among students whose rates are already far higher than the average, and has taken a close look at what is known about influences on dropout behavior and at the available data on dropouts and school completion.

Book excerpt: The drop out phenomenon is a persistent problem in public schools across the United States. The consequence of a student dropping out of school negatively impacts both the individual who chooses to drop out and the society that ultimately is responsible for supporting that individual. The purpose of this study is to analyze the decision making processes of at-risk students who either dropout or choose to persevere and complete their high school education and to understand what factors influence that decision in a semi-wealthy suburban community. A number of factors influence students during their decision making process. Students who receive special education services or live in poverty are significantly less likely to graduate than their peers at Franklin Park High School. This qualitative case study examines why students choose to drop out and remain in school in a low incidence drop out community. The two theoretical frameworks of goals theory and organizational theory work in concert to provide a lens to view the dropout phenomenon from the perspective of the individual and the organization. The vast majority of at-risk students at Franklin Park High School are able to persevere and graduate, but a percentage of students choose to drop out each year contrary to their own self-interest. At-risk students who are able to graduate are focused on the goal of high school graduation, willing to complete all tasks related to reaching that goal, and access appropriate resources and supports to achieve their goal. At-risk students who chose to drop out are not focused on the goal of high school graduation, course failures, negative peer relationships, attendance issues, and a lack of connection to the school community.

The researcher felt that, in order to glean a true picture of the facts as it relates to the African American dropouts, it was imperative to relate the issues to those who were affected. Predictor variables investigated were: age, home language, retention history, SES, program of studies, suspensions, and GPA. Data were from a large urban school district in the state of Florida. A sample of 865 Hispanic/Latino male Latino students in the 8th grade in 1995-96 was followed longitudinally every year to the year 2000-01. Survival analysis and logistic regression were used to examine the data. The research questions were: 1) What is the relation between age, home language, retention history, SES, program of studies, suspensions, and GPA and dropping out of middle and secondary school by Hispanic/Latino males? 2) At what grade levels do the predictor variables begin to affect the male Hispanic/ Latino students' propensity for early school leaving? When are they at greatest risk? Of the predictor variables included in this research, age, retention history, program of studies, suspension, and GPA, were found to be statistically significant in the students' decision to drop out of school. This research also found that approximately 31% of this Hispanic/Latino male sample dropped out prior to completing their high school education during the 5-year span. Investigating the most hazardous time for dropping out of school, results suggested that for these students it is well into their secondary education, very close to when they would actually graduate, during their junior to senior years. It may be the time close to their eighteenth birthday that lets them legally choose to leave school that triggers this hazardous time period.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to understand school dropout in Zimbabwe from the perspectives of those with lived experiences of the phenomenon. As confirmed by literature, school dropout militates against efforts by schools and governments to increase graduation rates for individual and societal benefit. However, the major gap in literature which motivated this study was the glaringly missing voice of early school leavers (EScLs) themselves on the meaning they give to the school dropout phenomenon. Answers to the problem so far have largely come from secondary sources of data. The research was a qualitative case study, influenced by the interpretive philosophy. BronfenbrenneraÌ22́Ơ4́Øs Bioecological Theory of Human Development and AjzenaÌ22́Ơ4́Øs Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) formed the theoretical framework for the study. Twenty-two purposively sampled EScLs participated in focus group discussions, face-to-face interview and documented life stories. Research ethics were observed to ensure EScLsaÌ22́Ơ4́Ø informed decision to participate in the study. The study established that school dropout could be best understood as a personal experience, having a greater impact at individual than societal levels. Findings revealed that both the process of dropping out and ultimately being an EScL are unpleasant and traumatic conditions, best understood as more of a psychological than an administrative problem. This results in a severed self-concept affecting an individual throughout life. It emerged from the study that loss, particularly through the death of biological parents, was the major underlying cause of school dropout, thus, pull factors take the toll over push and fall out factors. As solutions to the problem, the findings suggested a redefinition of vulnerability in response to the diverse and complex circumstances affecting learners. Findings also suggested the training of guidance and counselling teachers for effective intervention in learnersaÌ22́Ơ4́Ø problems. Education reforms and policy reviews that address inequity were recommended. Future studies could focus on in-depth analysis of pull factors in relation to school dropout.
