This book was released on 2011-04-26 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent peace initiative (a common word) in Muslim-Christian relations, emphasis on the way forward between Islam and Christianity has been a frantic call to "love of God and love of neighbor." This call, argued in this book, provokes rival and parallel logic in the concepts of monotheism between Christian religious leaders and scholars on the one hand and Islamic religious leaders and scholars on the other. Using in places the framework of critical discourse analysis (CDA), the author analyzes some text extracts from a common word in order to expose the underlying problems of ideologies, dichotomies, identity constructions, and orthodoxy claims that are associated with the Islamic Tawhid and Christian Trinity. Drawing from various conferences and workshops convened by both religious communities as well as some social scientist insights, this book finds authentic communication in Muslim-Christian relations grounded in recognition and acceptance of the differences between Islam and Christianity. Recognizing the ideological issues in the usage of the appositional pronouns us Muslims and you Christians as suggesting dichotomy, the author suggests rather the education of both Muslims and Christians, starting from the kindergarten on the religion and beliefs of the other and to re-interpret and revise conflicting Qur'anic and biblical issues pertaining to Muslim-Christian relations.

The central message behind ACW is that the future of the world depends on peace between Muslims and Christians". ACW aims to achieve political change through theological argumentation. An improvement in Islam-West relations can be indirectly achieved through a focus on improving Christian-Muslim relations. This study investigates the genesis and fruits of ACW, highlighting the importance of a specific historical and sociopolitical "Sitz im Leben" which decisively influenced its form and content."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2007 a consortium of Muslim clerics and scholars produced a document entitled A Common Word Between Us and You which was issued as an open letter to the leaders of the major Christian churches. This document was answered by another open letter from religious academics at the Yale Center for Faith and Culture. At first glance, the authors of both documents seem to be motivated by a desire to establish a dialogue between Christians and Muslims. Yet, is this really the case? There is an underlying assumption for both documents. This assumption is that since both are monotheistic religions then it may be asserted that both Christians and Muslims not only believe in only one God but they believe in the same God. Thus, although outwardly the two religions are very different, in fact they are essentially the same, or at least equivalent. Such teaching is commonly accepted in many religious circles today, even among some evangelical Christians. However, it is not a Biblical concept, nor is it consistent with the historic faith of the church. Furthermore, it is also is inconsistent with the Islamic faith as presented in both the Quran and Islamic traditional teaching. In this important book we are presented with a solid biblical understanding of the nature of God and His revealed truth. In addition, with many years experience and training in Islamic law and tradition, the authors expertly demonstrate the fallacies in the A Common Word from a Muslim worldview. Today, when Islam is making aggressive advances in much of the world, it is imperative that the church maintains the truths of the faith with greater zeal than ever before. This book is an invaluable tool to accomplish this very purpose. Sam Solomon, a convert to Christianity, is a senior lecturer, a human rights activist and an advisor to British and European parliamentarians on Islamic issues. Sam has authored a numerous thought-provoking books and articles on Christian-Muslim relations. E Al Maqdisi is a prolific writer and debater, an author of some 15 books, and a regular contributor to many Internet sites on the complex subject of Islam and its teachings.

Book excerpt: A Common Word Between Us and You (ACW) is an open letter, dated 13 October 2007, from leaders of the Islamic religion to those of the Christian religion. It calls for peace between Muslims and Christians and seeks common ground and understanding between both religions. This volume examines the document from a number of perspectives. Exploring the events that led to ACW, it provides an overview of responses to the document and its use of scripture. It also relates the reception of ACW to several specific and contrasting contexts, and recommends new avenues for ACW-inspired discussion. Advancing debate and dialogue between Jews, Muslims and Christians, this volume promotes a distinctive methodology for inter-religious studies, and serves as an invaluable resource for students and scholars of theology and religious studies.

Book excerpt: From Miroslav Volf, one of the world's foremost Christian theologians—and co-teacher, along with Tony Blair, of a groundbreaking Yale University course on faith and globalization—comes Allah, a timely and provocative argument for a new pluralism between Muslims and Christians. In a penetrating exploration of every side of the issue, from New York Times headlines on terrorism to passages in the Koran and excerpts from the Gospels, Volf makes an unprecedented argument for effecting a unified understanding between Islam and Christianity. In the tradition of Seyyed Hossein Nasr’s Islam in the Modern World, Volf’s Allah is essential reading for students of the evolving political science of the twenty-first century.

Chapters come from established scholars including Reuven Firestone, Douglas Pratt and Clinton Bennett, emerging scholars, as well as practitioner perspectives. Highlighting the diversity within the field of "Christian-Muslim" encounter, case studies cover examples from the US and globally, and include dialogue in the US post 9/11, Nigerian Muslims and Christians, and Christian responses to Islamophobia in the UK. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the British press prejudiced against Muslims? In what ways can prejudice be explicit or subtle? This book uses a detailed analysis of over 140 million words of newspaper articles on Muslims and Islam, combining corpus linguistics and discourse analysis methods to produce an objective picture of media attitudes. The authors analyse representations around frequently cited topics such as Muslim women who wear the veil and 'hate preachers'. The analysis is self-reflexive and multidisciplinary, incorporating research on journalistic practices, readership patterns and attitude surveys to answer questions which include: what do journalists mean when they use phrases like 'devout Muslim' and how did the 9/11 and 7/7 attacks affect press reporting? This is a stimulating and unique book for those working in fields of discourse analysis and corpus linguistics, while clear explanations of linguistic terminology make it valuable to those in the fields of politics, media studies, journalism and Islamic studies.

Book excerpt: A major and substantial step toward better Christian/Muslim relations was taken in 2008 the effects of which continue in ever-widening circles today. The initiative, called A Common Word Between Us and You, began with a desire to create a pathway to peace through focusing the attention of leaders of the Islamic and Christian faiths, faiths whose adherents comprise over half of the world's population, on their shared values and beliefs-especially the love of God and the neighbor, rather than on their differences. Because of its exceptional significance, Sophia has chosen to celebrate this dialogue by printing several documents that have become part of A Common Word initiative. Included are: the Open Letter, His Holiness Benedict XVI's address to the Vatican Conference, the Archbishop of Canterbury Dr. Rowan Williams' response to the Open Letter, HRH Ghazi bin Muhammad's essay on the theological motives and expectations behind the initiative as well as his address to Pope Benedict XVI on the occasion of His Holiness's historic visit to Jordan in 2009, two articles by Seyyed Hossein Nasr, an article by Miroslav Volf, Reza Shah-Kazemi's paper on "God as 'The Loving' in Islam," an overview of the Vatican Conference by Ibrahim Kalin, the Turkish theologian who was the Muslim spokesperson, and the Final Declaration of the Vatican Conference.
