Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Brahms's Violin Sonatas: Style, Structure, and Performance is a companion volume to Joel Lester's award-winning 1999 study Bach's Works for Solo Violin: Style, Structure, and Performance. Using a minimum of technical language and with annotated musical examples illustrating almost every point, Brahms's Violin Sonatas explores three masterpieces of the concert repertoire in a book designed for performers and music scholars alike. A major focus is how much can be learned by carefully reading Brahms's artistically nuanced musical notation, and by understanding Brahms's style-especially his music's deep connections to Classical-Era harmony, phrasing, and form while at the same time using late-19th-century harmonies, dissonances, and thematic evolutions, along with the contrapuntal textures that imbues all his works with a uniquely "Brahmsian" sound. Lester also explores how these works relate to important events in Brahms's life. Practical and concrete suggestions on performance arise from many of these discussions, calling performers' and analysts' attention to both technical and interpretive matters. Lester's aim is to inspire readers to explore their own individual approaches to Brahms's music, balancing what they find in the music to how they balance today's performance and interpretive styles with the ways that Brahms himself and his contemporaries might have played and experienced his creations"--

Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2009 in the subject Musicology - Miscellaneous, The University of Malaya, language: English, abstract: Franz Schubert’ last piano sonata, D. 960 in Bb Major by was written in 1828 (published in 1839), shortly after Beethoven’s death -- he died in 1827. According to Robert Winter, Beethoven was the most influential composer for Franz Schubert. Schubert’s sonatas, in particular, were modeled on Beethoven’s in terms of form and structure. This last sonata is one of Schubert’s popular sonatas, and is often performed. It also has been frequently criticized because of the unusual aspects of its sonata form. Winter has described the last sonata as, “suffused by the composer’s characteristic melancholy, mingled with a feeling of contemplative ecstasy. The stepwise elegiac opening alternates with disembodied trills in the bass, leading to remote keys, notably f# minor, before the exposition is over.” This paper will discuss the following aspects of the first movement -- the form, the key schemes, and the development of themes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Variation is a fundamental musical principle, yet its most naked expression - variation form - resists all but the broadest of descriptions. This book offers listener, performer, analyst and composer an eclectic array of approaches to `Theme and Variations', including: patterns of departure and return; real versus perceived time; strategies of propulsion and closure in an intrinsically cyclic and open-ended form; the interplay of authorial voices deriving from dialogue between the `self' of variations and the `other' of their theme; critique of a theme through a set's generic references; drama and narrative achieved through textural and tonal control; and the intrinsic sound of a variation, so different from that of a freely composed work. These topics are introduced through a general survey of the form, seen through the prisms of the provenance of themes and the ideologies of sets, before being developed through close study of Brahms's variation sets and movements. Brahms was supremely aware of his place in music history and was uncommonly self-conscious in his manipulation of different techniques of composition. His variation sets - some of the most well-crafted and beloved examples - place the interplay of forms and styles at the heart of their identity. Moreover, in their stunning breadth and diversity they offer a microcosm of Brahms's entire output, a succinct revelation of his life-long concerns. Through them we marvel at his technical and poetic mastery, and journey to the heart of his creative character.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: To this day, the three violin sonatas by Johannes Brahms have become a part of the standard violin repertoire. All composed just under a decade, his sonatas are filled with beautiful lyricism, passion, and contrasting emotions. Brahms's relationships with his friends, such as violinist Joseph Joachim and contralto singer Hermine Spies, influenced some of his works. This project report is an examination of the Brahms Sonata No. 2 for Piano and Violin, Opus 100 through history, analysis, and interpretations. The history of Brahms's life and influences were observed in order to understand his personality and the meaning behind his music. The sonata was studied through musical detail, looking carefully at how the dynamics, phrasing, and voicing shape the piece. Two artists were compared with their own interpretations of the second sonata. The purpose of this study is for one to create their own idea and voice in preparation for a performance of the piece.
