Book excerpt: A wind-tunnel investigation has been conducted to determine the performance and static stability and control characteristics of an external-flow jet-flap transport configuration having inboard pod-mounted engines and full-span triple-slotted flaps. Tests were made with the engines mounted clustered at 22.0 percent and 30.4 percent semispan to represent double (Siamese) pods and with engines mounted at 22.0 percent and 41.7 percent semispan to represent a more spread arrangement. Tests were also made to evaluate the effectiveness of wing leading-edge blowing as a means of improving the aerodynamic efficiency of the configuration and of eliminating the large engine-out roll asymmetries that , occurred for the configuration when the wing with an engine out stalled first.

Book excerpt: The low-speed flying qualities of an experimental STOL configuration were evaluated by using a fixed-base six-degree-of-freedom simulation. The configuration had either an externally blown flap (EBF) wing or an augmentor wing (AW). The AW configuration was investigated with two tails, one sized for the AW configuration and a larger one sized for the EBF configuration. The emphasis of the study was on the 70-knot approach task. The stability and control characteristics were compared with existing criteria. Several control systems were investigated for the normal four-engine condition and for the engine-out transient condition. Minimum control and stall speeds were determined for both the three- and four-engine operation.

Areas studied include takeoff performance criteria, landing performance criteria and noise level criteria. An analysis of military and commercial takeoff and landing performance criteria established the sensitivity of aircraft size and performance to variations in criteria and provided a recommended military criteria for the design of STOL aircraft. These recommended criteria were, in turn, compared with likely commercial STOL criteria. The recommended military STOL design criteria were utilized to define an Externally Blown Flap STOL transport design. Utilizing this airplane as a point of departure an analysis was also conducted to define the impact of engine cycle changes and acoustic treatment on aircraft noise and aircraft size. (Author).

Book excerpt: The investigation was conducted to determine the dynamic stability derivatives of an externally blown jet-flap transport configuration having clustered inboard pod-mounted engines and full-span triple-slotted flaps. The results showed that the model had positive damping in pitch, roll, and yaw up to the stall angle of attack. The application of power resulted in an increase in pitch damping at high angles of attack and a moderate increase in yaw damping for the higher flap deflections but had no consistent effects on roll damping. For a given level of total engine thrust, the damping derivatives were generally not affected by frequency or by having one engine inoperative.
