Book excerpt: A study was conducted to develop a modeling approach that integrates flexure and shear interaction under cyclic loading conditions to obtain reliable predictions of inelastic responses of reinforced concrete (RC) structural walls. The proposed modeling approach incorporates cyclic RC panel constitutive behavior based on an interpretation of the fixed-strut-angle approach into a two-dimensional fiber-based macroscopic model. Coupling of axial and shear responses under cyclic loading is achieved at the fiber (panel) level, which further allows coupling of flexural and shear responses at the element level. The sensitivity of model results to various modeling parameters (e.g., material constitutive parameters and modeling parameters), wall configuration parameters (e.g., aspect ratio, boundary and web reinforcement ratios), and response parameters (levels of wall axial load and shear) was investigated to demonstrate the ability of the model to predict the behavior or RC walls for a broad range of conditions. The proposed analytical model was validated and calibrated against experimental results obtained from six large-scale, heavily instrumented, cantilever structural wall specimens characterized with different aspect ratios (1.5, 2.0 and 3.0), axial load levels (0.0025 A_g_f'_c, 0.07 A_g_f'_c and 0.10 A_g_f'_c) and wall shear stress levels (between approximately 4 and 8 [square root]"f'_c) psi) tested under combined constant axial load and reversed cyclic lateral loading applied at the top of the wall. Comparisons of experimental and analytical model results for moderately slender RC walls (aspect ratio 1.5 and 2.0) revealed that the model successfully captures experimentally observed interaction between nonlinear shear and flexural deformations under cyclic loading and predicts lateral strength and stiffness that is within 10% of experimentally measured values. In addition, the magnitudes and relative contributions of shear and flexural deformations along the wall height were predicted closely at low and moderate drift levels, whereas at drift levels larger than 2.0%, model results were within 25% of experimentally measured deformation components. As well, localized nonlinear responses such as vertical tensile and compressive strains and wall rotations at the wall base were well predicted by the model. The model results were less accurate for the slender (aspect ratio 3.0) RC wall specimen in terms of relative contributions of shear and flexural deformations and magnitudes of compressive strains. Demonstrated model sensitivity to parameters of the implemented RC panel behavior suggested the need for calibration of these parameters for reliable predictions of nonlinear wall behavior. Given the limited model calibration performed in this study, additional work is needed, particularly for slender RC walls where preliminary results were less accurate. Finally, the implementation of the model into a publicly available computational platform is required to enable more detailed system level studies and future model development.

Five large-scale cantilever structural wall specimens, subjected to combined constant axial load and reversed cyclic lateral loading, were designed, constructed, instrumented, and tested. The wall specimens were designed to yield in flexure prior to loss of lateral load capacity. Primary test variables included aspect ratio (1.5 and 2.0), axial load level (0.025Agf'c and 0.10Agf'c), and wall shear stress level. Test results showed that substantial loss of lateral load capacity was observed for a variety of reasons, such as diagonal tension, diagonal compression, sliding shear, concrete crushing, and buckling of vertical reinforcement. Test results also indicated that significant strength loss was impacted by wall aspect ratio, axial load level, and wall shear stress level. Although various failure modes were observed for five wall specimens, drift ratio at substantial loss of lateral load capacity was approximately 3.0% for all tests. The average contribution of nonlinear shear deformations to the top lateral displacement varied between approximately 20 and 50%, with lower values for the aspect ratio 2.0 walls. Modeling parameters recommended by ASCE 41-06 and FEMA 356, including effective flexural and shear stiffness values, deformation capacities, and residual strengths, are compared with the corresponding values derived from test results. Current modeling approaches, including both uncoupled (P-M and V independent) and coupled (interaction between P-M and V) models, were used to assess their ability to capture the measured responses for the moderate aspect ratio structural walls. The investigation indicates that both models overestimate lateral load capacity and lateral stiffness, but with notable differences. In general, results for the uncoupled models are less consistent with the test results, indicating that coupled models are needed to adequately capture the responses of moderate aspect ratio walls. The primary shortcoming of the coupled model was the lack of cyclic material models. The detailed response information obtained from the heavily instrumented walls tested in this study provide essential data to develop robust analytical models, including models that account for cyclic nonlinear shear-flexure interaction.

For performance-based design of structural walls, including coupled wall systems, it is necessary to model cyclic responses with strength and stiffness deterioration of the prototype system over a wide range of shaking intensities. Current models typically incorporate strength loss using ad-hoc approaches that manipulate material relations to produce strength loss that are difficult to calibrate for the broad range of expected shaking intensities. To address this issue, a model is proposed that captures strength and stiffness degradation compatible with backbone curves that are currently available in the literature. The model is tested in case studies under static and dynamic loading to demonstrate its reliability and effectiveness. The model is refined further to be used for coupled wall systems where the fluctuation of shear and axial load in the coupled piers makes it difficult to pre-determine the deformation parameters of the backbone curves for the piers.In a separate but related study, a database of reinforced concrete wall tests is assembled to develop a new model that estimates the plastic hinge length of flexure controlled structural walls and validate the model against test results. Plastic hinge lengths have been widely used and it is well known that deformation parameters of backbone curves (Structural walls or any other element) depend on element size (Plastic hinge length). The goal of this study is to calibrate backbone curve deformation parameters for a range of wall element sizes and then use the calibrated plastic hinge lengths in the subsequent case studies that incorporate strength loss.

Deformations due to flexure, shear and axial load are accounted for at all times using separate hysteresis loops for flexure and shear. A method of predicting the response of a reinforced concrete frame subjected to an earthquake loading is pre sented. The method accounts for deformations in addition to elastic flexural deformations by introducing an equiva lent rotational spring at each member end. By defining the properties of the spring properly, the response of the model can closely simulate that of the actual member. Standard slope deflection equations are modified to accommodate elastic members with rotational springs at their ends. When these equations are used to construct the frame stiffness matrix, computations in the inelastic range can be done in the same manner as those in the elastic range. The stiffness matrix is thus updated to be compat ible with the deteriorated structure at each instant of the motion. The equations of motion are solved using a linear acceleration method. A behavioral study is presented based on the analyses of seven twenty story shear wall structures. Variables with in the behavioral study were horizontal force factor K,shear stiffness and taper. The results of the behavioral study are discussed and compared and conclusions drawn.

Further, it is often decided to enhance the earthquake resistance of facilities that still meet their functional requirements and fulfil their purpose, if they are not earthquake-safe. In order to decide how badly a structure needs seismic upgrading or to prioritise it in a population of structures, a seismic evaluation is needed, which also serves as a guide for the extent and type of strengthening. Seismic codes do not sufficiently cover the delicate phase of seismic evaluation nor the many potential technical options for seismic upgrading; therefore research is on-going and the state-of-the-art is constantly evolving. All the more so as seismic evaluation and rehabilitation demand considerable expertise, to make best use of the available safety margins in the existing structure, to adapt the engineering capabilities and techniques at hand to the particularities of a project, to minimise disruption of use, etc. Further, as old structures are very diverse in terms of their materials and layout, seismic retrofitting does not lend itself to straightforward codified procedures or cook-book approaches.
