In this book, we develop a coherent theory of congestion control from the ground up to help understand and design these algorithms. We model network traffic as fluids that flow from sources to destinations and model congestion control algorithms as feedback dynamical systems. We show that the model is well defined. We characterize its equilibrium points and prove their stability. We will use several real protocols for illustration but the emphasis will be on various mathematical techniques for algorithm analysis. Specifically we are interested in four questions: 1. How are congestion control algorithms modelled? 2. Are the models well defined? 3. How are the equilibrium points of a congestion control model characterized? 4. How are the stability of these equilibrium points analyzed? For each topic, we first present analytical tools, from convex optimization, to control and dynamical systems, Lyapunov and Nyquist stability theorems, and to projection and contraction theorems. We then apply these basic tools to congestion control algorithms and rigorously prove their equilibrium and stability properties. A notable feature of this book is the careful treatment of projected dynamics that introduces discontinuity in our differential equations. Even though our development is carried out in the context of congestion control, the set of system theoretic tools employed and the process of understanding a physical system, building mathematical models, and analyzing these models for insights have a much wider applicability than to congestion control.

Service guarantees can be provided if the network makes resource reservations (bandwidth, buffers, priority scheduling, etc.) on behalf of each connection. A problem arises, however, in the control of connections that do not reserve network resources, and hence are not given any performance guarantees by the network. One network control scenario is for these low priority connections to adapt to changing network conditions in order to achieve their data transfer goals and to minimize network congestion. Congestion in this case is a result of a mismatch between the network resources and the amount of traffic admitted for transmission. Consequently, congestion control can be interpreted as the problem of matching the admitted traffic to the network resources. This, in turn, could be viewed as a classical problem of feedback control (i.e., matching the output to the input of a dynamic system). This thesis considers sensitivity methods for the control of congestion in computer networks using neural network models of the system dynamics and system performance sensitivity derivatives. The control methods proposed are used to determine how a feedback-based rate controlled source can satisfy its data transfer requirements by adapting its data rate to changes in the network state.

Book excerpt: Since the field of computer networks has rapidly grown in the last two decades, congestion control of traffic loads within networks has become a high priority. Congestion occurs in network routers when the number of incoming packets exceeds the available network resources, such as buffer space and bandwidth allocation. This may result in a poor network performance with reference to average packet queueing delay, packet loss rate and throughput. To enhance the performance when the network becomes congested, several different active queue management (AQM) methods have been proposed and some of these are discussed in this thesis. Specifically, these AQM methods are surveyed in detail and their strengths and limitations are highlighted. A comparison is conducted between five known AQM methods, Random Early Detection (RED), Gentle Random Early Detection (GRED), Adaptive Random Early Detection (ARED), Dynamic Random Early Drop (DRED) and BLUE, based on several performance measures, including mean queue length, throughput, average queueing delay, overflow packet loss probability, packet dropping probability and the total of overflow loss and dropping probabilities for packets, with the aim of identifying which AQM method gives the most satisfactory results of the performance measures. This thesis presents a new AQM approach based on the RED algorithm that determines and controls the congested router buffers in an early stage. This approach is called Dynamic RED (REDD), which stabilises the average queue length between minimum and maximum threshold positions at a certain level called the target level to prevent building up the queues in the router buffers. A comparison is made between the proposed REDD, RED and ARED approaches regarding the above performance measures. Moreover, three methods based on RED and fuzzy logic are proposed to control the congested router buffers incipiently. These methods are named REDD1, REDD2, and REDD3 and their performances are also compared with RED using the above performance measures to identify which method achieves the most satisfactory results. Furthermore, a set of discrete-time queue analytical models are developed based on the following approaches: RED, GRED, DRED and BLUE, to detect the congestion at router buffers in an early stage. The proposed analytical models use the instantaneous queue length as a congestion measure to capture short term changes in the input and prevent packet loss due to overflow. The proposed analytical models are experimentally compared with their corresponding AQM simulations with reference to the above performance measures to identify which approach gives the most satisfactory results. The simulations for RED, GRED, ARED, DRED, BLUE, REDD, REDD1, REDD2 and REDD3 are run ten times, each time with a change of seed and the results of each run are used to obtain mean values, variance, standard deviation and 95% confidence intervals. The performance measures are calculated based on data collected only after the system has reached a steady state. After extensive experimentation, the results show that the proposed REDD, REDD1, REDD2 and REDD3 algorithms and some of the proposed analytical models such as DRED-Alpha, RED and GRED models offer somewhat better results of mean queue length and average queueing delay than these achieved by RED and its variants when the values of packet arrival probability are greater than the value of packet departure probability, i.e. in a congestion situation. This suggests that when traffic is largely of a non bursty nature, instantaneous queue length might be a better congestion measure to use rather than the average queue length as in the more traditional models.

Congestion occurs when resource demands exceed the capacity, which results in poor performance in the form of low network utilization and high packet loss rate. The goal of congestion control mechanisms is to use the network resources as efficiently as possible. The research work in this thesis is centered on finding ways to address these types of problems and provide guidelines for predicting and controlling network performance, through the use of suitable mathematical tools and control analysis. The first congestion collapse in the Internet was observed in 1980's. To solve the problem, Van Jacobson proposed the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) congestion control algorithm based on the Additive Increase and Multiplicative Decrease (AIMD) mechanism in 1988. To be effective, a congestion control mechanism must be paired with a congestion detection scheme. To detect and distribute network congestion indicators fairly to all on-going flows, Active Queue Management (AQM), e.g., the Random Early Detection (RED) queue management scheme has been developed to be deployed in the intermediate nodes. The currently dominant AIMD congestion control, coupled with the RED queue in the core network, has been acknowledged as one of the key factors to the overwhelming success of the Internet. In this thesis, the AIMD/RED system, based on the fluid-flow model, is systematically studied. In particular, we concentrate on the system modeling, stability analysis and bounds estimates. We first focus on the stability and fairness analysis of the AIMD/RED system with a single bottleneck. Then, we derive the theoretical estimates for the upper and lower bounds of homogeneous and heterogeneous AIMD/RED systems with feedback delays and further discuss the system performance when it is not asymptotically stable. Last, we develop a general model for a class of multiple-bottleneck networks and discuss the stability properties of such a system. Theoretical and simulation results presented in this thesis provide insights for in-depth understanding of AIME/RED system and help predict and control the system performance for the Internet with higher data rate links multiplexed with heterogeneous flows.

Most existing network controls have discontinuous actions, but such discontinuity in control actions is commonly omitted in analytical models, and instead continuous models were widely adopted in the literature. This approximation works well under certain conditions, but it does cause significant discrepancy in creating robust, responsive control solutions for congestion management. In this dissertation, I investigated three major topics. I proposed a generic discontinuous congestion control model and its design methodology to guarantee asymptotic stability and eliminate traffic oscillation, based on the sliding mode control (SMC) theory. My scheme shows that discontinuity plays a crucial role in optimization of the I-D based congestion control algorithms. When properly modeled, the simple I-D control laws can be made highly robust to parameter and model uncertainties. I discussed applicability of this model to some existing flow or congestion control schemes, e.g. XON/XOFF, rate and window based AIMD, RED, etc. It can also be effectively applied to design of detection and defense of distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks. DDoS management can be considered a special case of the flow control problem. Based on my generic discontinuous congestion control model, I developed a backward-propagation feedback control strategy for DDoS detection and defense. It not only prevents DDoS attacks but also provides smooth traffic and bounded queue size. Another application of the congestion control algorithms is design of private group communication networks. I proposed a new technique for protection of group communications by concealment of sender-recipient pairs. The basic approach is to fragment and disperse encrypted messages into packets to be transported along different paths, so that the adversary cannot efficiently determine the source/recipient of a message without correct ordering of all packets. Packet flows among nodes are made balanced, to eliminate traffic patterns related to group activities. I proposed a sliding window-based flow control scheme to control transmission of payload and dummy packets. My algorithms allow flexible tradeoff between traffic concealment and performance requirement.

Book excerpt: This book addresses a major problem for today’s large-scale networked systems: certification of the required stability and performance properties using analytical and computational models. On the basis of illustrative case studies, it demonstrates the applicability of theoretical methods to biological networks, vehicle fleets, and Internet congestion control. Rather than tackle the network as a whole —an approach that severely limits the ability of existing methods to cope with large numbers of physical components— the book develops a compositional approach that derives network-level guarantees from key structural properties of the components and their interactions. The foundational tool in this approach is the established dissipativity theory, which is reviewed in the first chapter and supplemented with modern computational techniques. The book blends this theory with the authors’ recent research efforts at a level that is accessible to graduate students and practising engineers familiar with only the most basic nonlinear systems concepts.
