The results showed that the finite element model of the full scale laboratory bridge reasonably predicted the behavior of the actual full scale bridge. The damage tests showed that damage to exterior beams is more critical than damage to interior beams. Also, for the damage conditions investigated, the tests revealed that damage in which no prestressing strands were severed did not greatly alter the behavior of the bridge.

Book excerpt: The durability of infrastructure components, such as prestressed concrete bridge beams, can be significantly affected by long-term deterioration associated with corrosion. Corrosion is a major concern for bridges in Virginia, due to the frequent use of deicing salts during the winter, as well as the number of structures in marine environments. The residual capacity of corrosion damaged prestressed I-beams and box beams needs to be accurately estimated to determine if damaged bridges need to be posted, and to help with making informed decisions related to repair, rehabilitation and replacement of damaged bridges. This report presents the results of testing of six corrosion-damaged prestressed beams removed from existing bridges during their demolition. Three beams were Type II AASHTO I-beams extracted from the Lesner Bridge in Virginia Beach, and three were 48 in wide by 27 in deep box beams extracted from the Aden Road Bridge near Quantico, Virginia. Prior to testing, the beams were visually inspected and two types of non-destructive evaluations were performed to identify corrosion activity: resistivity measurements and half-cell potential measurements. The beams were then tested in the lab to determine their flexural strength. Following testing, samples of strand were removed and tested to determine their tensile properties. Cores were taken from the Aden Road beams and from both the beams and decks of the Lesner Bridge beams to determine compressive strength. Powdered concrete samples were removed to perform chloride concentration tests. The tested strengths of the beams were compared to calculated strengths using two methods for damage estimation and two different calculation approaches. The methods for damage estimation relied exclusively on visual inspections; one was the set of methods recommended by Naito et al. (2010), while the second was a modified method developed in this study from the current tests. The two calculation approaches were a strain compatibility method and the AASHTO LRFD method. Overall, the results yielded reasonable estimates of residual strength, except for one of the box beams that was discovered to have considerable water within the hollow cells. The final recommendations are that bridge inspectors develop detailed damage maps of corrosion-damaged beams, and that load raters use the Naito et al. method to get a conservative estimate of damage for both box beams and I-beams. Either method for calculating strength is valid, however the AASHTO LRFD method is simpler.

Book excerpt: Due to frequent accidental damage to prestressed concrete (P/C) bridges caused by impact from overheight vehicles, a project was initiated to evaluate the strength and load distribution characteristics of damaged P/C bridges. A comprehensive literature review was conducted. It was concluded that only a few references pertain to the assessment and repair of damaged P/C beams. No reference was found that involves testing of a damaged bridge(s) as well as the damaged beams following their removal. Structural testing of 2 damaged bridges was conducted in the field.

Book excerpt: Analytical models were created for the undamaged and damaged center spans of the WB bridge; stiffened plate and grillage models were used. Both models were accurate at predicting the deflections in the tested bridges and should be similarly accurate in modeling other P/C bridges. The moment fractions per beam were computed using both models. The damaged model indicates a significant decrease in moment in the damaged beams and a redistribution of load to the adjacent curb and rail as well as to the undamaged beam lines.

Book excerpt: The Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Analysis and Design of Bridges held at ~e§me, lzmir, Turkey from 28 June 1982 to 9 July 1982 are contained in the present volume. The Advanced Study Institute was attended by 37 lecturers and participants from 10 different countries. The Organizing Committee consisted of Professors P. Gtilkan, A. C. Scordelis, S. T. Wasti and 9. Yl. lmaz. The guidelines set by NATO for the Advanced Study Institute require it to serve not only as an efficient forum for the dissemination of available advanced knowledge to a selected group of qualified people but also as a platform for the exploration of future research possibilities in the scientific or engineering areas concerned. The main topics covered by the present Advanced Study Institute were the mathematical modelling of bridges for better analysis and the scientific assessment of bridge behaviour for the introduction of improved design procedures. It has been our observation that as a result of the range and depth of the lectures presented and the many informal discussions that took place, ideas became fissile, the stimulus never flagged and many gaps in the engineering knowledge of the participants were "bridged". Here we particularly wish to mention that valuable informal presenta tions of research work were made during the course of the Institute by Drs. Friedrich, Karaesmen, Lamas and Parker.

This book was released on 2007 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bridges B-0071 and B-0171 in Hamilton County, Ohio have been in service for about fifty years. They are short span bridges with prestressed concrete girders. Until late 2001, they had conventional reinforced concrete decks, which have been replaced with fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) decks. Two girders in bridge B-0171 were replaced with new prestressed girders. These bridges are significant as there are few instances of FRP decks on concrete girders. The Hamilton County Engineers Office contracted with the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Cincinnati to perform load testing on the bridges. Information gained from this research will seek to confirm the safety of the new technology, evaluate construction and design techniques with reference to the FRP deck, and determine overall performance of the bridge to provide understanding of the system. The two short span prestressed concrete bridges with fiber reinforced polymer decks were subjected to four sets of nondestructive truckload testing. Strain gauges were placed along the height of the girder cross-section, and longitudinally and transversely across the bottom of the deck. Displacement transducers were placed to measure overall girder displacement, relative deck displacement, deck panel separation, and deck-girder connection separation. A three-dimensional finite element analysis model was created to replicate the performance of each bridge. The two new prestressed girders in bridge B-0171 strengthened the bridge considerably and increased its load carrying capacity. But the old prestressed girders in bridge B-0071 and bridge B-0171 did not show any sign of deterioration. The four sets of test data collected over a two-year period show that the age effect on structural behavior is very small for both the bridges. The deck had very little influence on the distribution of loads in the structure for these bridges. Due to low deck stiffness and incomplete connectivity, the FRP deck did little to strengthen the girders. The long term monitoring of the deck result complied with the short term testing as reported by Eder8. The finite element model closely matched with the structural components of the original bridge. The new improved model is a better representation as it was calibrated with four sets of field data collected over a period of two years. The field test data from both tests shows that the girders are simply supported on the abutment. But the girders in the model are designed as fixed end beams to have a reasonable value for the modulus of concrete used in the model. In reality it can be assumed that the support condition is between fixed and simply supported. It was also demonstrated that the deck had very little influence on the distribution of loads in the structure for these bridges. The majority of the load transfer between girders was most likely due to the diaphragms. The Impact Factor based on one set of experimental results was 1.217. However, for analysis the LRFD value of 1.33 was used. The Load Rating Factor for bridge B-0071 was 1.66 and for bridge B-0171 was 2.48 with the governing truck loading being the Design load Type Tandem. These rating factors were based on girder performance only due to insufficient deck information.

Book excerpt: Damage investigation reports on the 1997 Northridge earthquake, California indicated some significant damage experienced by skewed highway bridges. In this study the Pico-Lyons Bridge was chosen to analyze the skew damage by using ABAQUS, a commercial finite element program. Dynamic time history analysis and pushover analysis were used to capture the skew behavior of the superstructure. Northridge ground motion was used in the dynamic analysis. Results from the simulation model showed that potential damage areas were comparable to those in the Pico-Lyons Bridge. To further develop simple methods that can be used for determination of seismic effects in skewed bridges, a series of bridges with various degrees of skewness was analyzed. These analyses used available earthquake records (such as Northridge and El Centro). Based on the results generated, a series of multipliers was developed. These multipliers can be used along with simple bridge analysis to account for the effect of skewness. In general, this study showed that the reaction forces at the piers (from girders) in the most severe case can be as much as 50%-60% more in skewed bridges compared with non-skewed bridges.

Book excerpt: Evaluation, repair and rehabilitation of bridges are increasingly important topics in the effort to deal with the deteriorating infrastructure. For example, in the United States about 40 percent of the nation's 570,000 bridges are classified, according to the Federal Highway Administra tion's (FHW A) criteria, as deficient and in need of rehabilitation and replacement. In other countries the situation is similar. FHW A estimates the cost of a bridge replacement and reha bilitation program at 50 billion dollars. The major factors that have contributed to the present situation are: the age, inadequate maintenance, increasing load spectra and environmental contamination. The deficient bridges are posted, repaired or replaced. The disposition of bridges involves clear economical and safety implications. To avoid high costs of replacement or repair, the evaluation must accurately reveal the present load carrying capacity of the struc ture and predict loads and any further changes in the capacity (deterioration) in the applicable time span. Accuracy of bridge evaluation can be improved by using the recent developments in bridge diagnostics, structural tests, material tests, structural analysis and probabilistic methods. There is a need for an international exchange of advanced experience to increase the research effi ciency. The Workshop is organized on the premise that the exchange of existing American and European experience in the area of bridge evaluation, repair and rehabilitation is beneficial for both parties involved.

Because of the huge amount of kinetic energy carried at high speeds, a train may interact significantly with the bridge and even resonate with it under certain circumstances. Equally important is the riding comfort of the train cars, which relates closely to the maneuverability of the train during its passage over the bridge at high speeds. This book is unique in that it is devoted entirely to the interaction between the supporting bridges and moving trains, the so-called vehicle-bridge interaction (VBI). Finite element procedures have been developed to treat interaction problems of various complexities, while the analytical solutions established for some typical problems are helpful for identifying the key parameters involved. Besides, some field tests were conducted to verify the theories established. This book provides an up-to-date coverage of research conducted on various aspects of the VBI problems. Using the series of VBI elements derived, the authors study a number of frontier problems, including the impact response of bridges with elastic bearings, the dynamic response of curved beam to moving centrifugal forces, the stability and derailment of trains moving over bridges shaken by earthquakes, the impact response of two trains crossing on a bridge, the steady-state response of trains moving over elevated bridges, and so on.
