Book excerpt: All sub disciplines in Organic Geochemistry (Petroleum Geochemistry, Environmental Geochemistry etc.) are linked by the basic analytical approaches used for identification and quantitation of individual organic substances. Hence, a fundamental prerequisite for organic geochemists is the knowledge not only about the individual analytical techniques but more about their potential as well as their limitations. In this issues basic analytical procedures and techniques are introduced comprising fundamental steps like sampling and sample storage, aspects of sample treatment like extraction and fractionation procedures and finally the specific techniques used for organic analyses on partially very low concentration levels such as mass spectrometry or infrared spectroscopy. Beside the technical aspects also application on organic-geochemical problems and the standard data evaluation practice is introduced. Finally, special chapters point to analytical pitfalls and to principal standard operation procedures. The intention of this issue is to get the readers familiar with analytical Organic Geochemistry and to enable them to assess the quality and suitability of specific analytical approaches, in particular with respect to the organic-geochemical problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elemental Analysis in Geochemistry: A. Major Elements provides an introduction to basic classical and modern instrumental ""macro"" methods for geochemical research. The intention is to acquaint the beginning analyst or geochemist with the minimum of analytical methods required to satisfactorily perform a complex silicate or similar analysis. By combining classical and modern instrumental methods in one book, strong emphasis is put on the importance of the analyst's ability to grasp the general structure and relation of some of the most frequently used analytical techniques. The book begins with basic concepts such as the preparation and decomposition of samples; statistical evaluation; and methods of separation and analysis. It outlines the classical qualitative separation scheme, which is very useful in understanding the analytical problems of complex mixtures, especially when hydrogen sulfide group metals are present. It discusses analytical techniques such as the detection and quantitative gravimetric analysis of silicon; volumetric or titrimetric methods; emission photometric analysis; atomic absorption spectroscopy; nondestructive instrumental methods; methods in X-ray spectrochemistry; and developments in neutron activation analysis.

Book excerpt: Pergamon Series in Analytical Chemistry, Volume 2: Basic Analytical Chemistry brings together numerous studies of the vast expansion in the use of classical and instrumental methods of analysis. This book is composed of six chapters. After providing a theoretical background of analytical chemistry, this book goes on dealing with the fundamental principles of chemical equilibria in solution. The subsequent chapters consider the advances in qualitative and quantitative chemical analyses. These chapters present a unified view of these analyses based on the Bronsted-Lowry theory and the donor-acceptor principle. These topics are followed by discussions on instrumental analysis using various methods, including electrochemical, optical, spectroscopic, and thermal methods, as well as radioactive isotopes. The finals chapters examine the separation methods and the essential features of organic chemical analysis that are different from methods for inorganic compounds. This book is of value to analytical chemists and researchers.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The founders of geology at the beginning of the last century were suspicious oflaboratories. Hutton's well-known dictum illustrates the point: "There are also superficial reasoning men . . . they judge of the great oper ations of the mineral kingdom from having kindled a fire, and looked into the bottom of a little crucible. " The idea was not unreasonable; the earth is so large and its changes are so slow and so complicated that labo ratory tests and experiments were of little help. The earth had to be studied in its own terms and geology grew up as a separate science and not as a branch of physics or chemistry. Its practitioners were, for the most part, experts in structure, stratigraphy, or paleontology, not in silicate chemistry or mechanics. The chemists broke into this closed circle before the physicists did. The problems of the classification of rocks, particularly igneous rocks, and of the nature and genesis of ores are obviously chemical and, by the mid- 19th century, chemistry was in a state where rocks could be effectively analyzed, and a classification built up depending partly on chemistry and partly on the optical study of thin specimens. Gradually the chemical study of rocks became one of the central themes of earth science.

Book excerpt: Trends in Analytical Chemistry, Volume 3 focuses on developments in analytical chemistry, including the adoption of automation in laboratory processes, chromatography, and flow analysis. The selection first underscores the effect of automation on the operations of analytical laboratories and techniques for the automated optimization of HPLC separations. Topics include initial requirements, window diagrams, and chemometric approaches. The text then ponders on generation of statistical tables by microcomputer; enzyme electrodes for continuous in-vivo monitoring; and enantiomeric analysis of the common protein amino acids by liquid chromatography. The publication takes a look at sample preparation for the analysis of heavy metals in foods and application of ion-selective electrodes in flow analysis, including dry ashing, acid extraction, and ion-selective electrodes in flowing systems. The text then examines trends in laboratory information management systems; zone electrophoresis in open-tubular capillaries; and using computers to interpret IR spectra of complex molecules. The selection is a valuable source of data for readers interested in the developments in analytical chemistry.
