Book excerpt: This report contains the proceedings of the Retardation and Recovery Symposium sponsored by the Aeronautical Systems Division on 13 and 14 November 1962. The Introductory Session was opened with the Keynote Address which reviewed the use and applications of deployable aerodynamic decelerators throughout the past fifty (50) years and noted the areas in which additional work had to be accomplished. The four Technical Sessions deal with the latest significant developments in the retardation and recovery area. The Technical Sessions begin with presentations and discussions of investigations in the hypersonic and supersonic flight regimes followed by a technical analysis of transonic and supersonic flow phenomena. In addition, new aerodynamic decelerator designs and discussion of the wind tunnel tests pertaining to these designs, as well as overall reliability of recovery systems, are presented. The final Technical Session concludes with a discussion of the military, scientific, and general objectives for decelerators intended for future use.

Book excerpt: Analytical and experimental studies of the characteristics of supersonic parachutes and associated phenomena, which resulted in the development of the Hyperflo parachute, are described. Data from wind tunnel test programs which were conducted with six and eight inch parachute models are discussed. These programs covered the Mach number range from 1.5 to 4.65 and included approximately 200 test conditions. The present paper describes the evolution of parachute canopies which performed satisfactorily through Mach 4.65 and, in a succeeding series of wind tunnel tests, through Mach 6. Results of a rocket sled test program and a free-flight program to test full-scale Hyperflo parachutes up to Mach numbers of 4.0 and altitudes of 130,000 feet are summarized.

Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of the flow field about rigid two-dimensional models of parachute canopies was conducted. Models representing the inflated profile shapes of the drag-producing surface of nine parachute canopy types were tested in the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) Smoke Tunnel Test Facility. Angles of attack varied from 0 to 30 degrees and photographs of the models and attendant smoke stream patterns were obtained for each test condition.

Sims and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wake flow field surveys were conducted in the wind tunnel behind several side strut mounted forebodies in the Mach number range from 2 to 5. Studies of the effects of design parameters on Hyperflo supersonic parachutes, and of high dynamic pressure parachute configurations deployed in such wakes were performed. Wake pressure distributions indicated an asymmetry due to the forebody support structure, and a disturbance to the flow field which emanates from the support structure. The latter was most pronounced at Mach numbers above 3. Modification to the wake caused by an air bleed into the forebody base was also indicated. Normal, but higher than predicted axial wake Mach number distributions were found to exist in the forebody wakes. Hyperflo tests at Mach numbers 5 to 5.5 showed abnormally large parachute oscillations with models located at large downstream positions aft of the forebodies. The effects of Hyperflo design parameters and forebody type on model performance are only qualitatively indicated by the tests conducted. (Author).
