Book excerpt: Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2015 in the subject Electrotechnology, grade: -, Warsaw University of Technology (Electrical Engineering), language: English, abstract: This study is focused on installations and faults diagnosis of high voltage underground cables and examined on the various ways through which they can be identified and corrected. It has been found that wear and tear is one of the major issues leading to electric faults like power loss. There has been seen that several causes of failure which could be identified with them and analyze better ways of detecting them. So, it has been looked at how to detect degradation of insulation of the underground cable. After a thorough analysis of fault detection techniques have been explained, the pre-location fault techniques is described; I illustrated many methods which aid to discover the fault location. I also developed a method which contributes in pre-location of the fault based on Matlab simulation and mathematical slope equation. This method was invented after the observation that the voltages measured at the local and remote substations, after filtering and after Fourier analysis, showed a linear behavior that was proportional to the respective distances between the fault location and the mentioned substations or generators. Thus, the developed method exploits such a linearity to estimate the fault location by interpolation, assuming that the parameters of the line are previously known and that dedicated devices are located on site in both substations to provide post-fault measurements of the faulted line. Finally, I clarify many pin-pointing methods to precisely determine the fault location.

Book excerpt: Methods of testing high voltage underground cable were investigated in order to find an alternative to the DC high-potential (hi-pot) test for cable maintenance testing. The search for such a method proved fruitless, however. The problems of using the DC hi-pot test are discussed, and a recommended procedure of testing is presented. In addition, a new method of locating cable faults is described and recommended. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Failure of underground cable on San Diego Gas & Electric?s electric underground distribution system is an ever increasing problem. While there are a great number of cable diagnostic techniques available, none lend themselves to both an averaged and location specific, on-line implementation. This dissertation demonstrates the development of an on-line suitable technique that utilizes transients and Fast Fourier Transforms to determine a cable section?s impedance magnitude and phase angle as a function of frequency. Simultaneously a theoretical model was developed to simulate various scenarios that an in-service cable might experience. Significant effort was expended developing and optimizing the measurement and data analysis technique. This includes a statistical approach for comparing performance of different cable samples. Both the preliminary and final tests demonstrated the superiority of the frequency domain analysis over comparisons in the time domain. With the effort to date, there appears to be three distinct results: good cable, degraded cable and damaged cable. These differences are statistically significant at the 95% confidence level. Additionally, there appears to be good agreement between the theoretical model and actual test results. Consequently, this measurement methodology continues to hold promise for future practical development.

Book excerpt: This book describes the methods of signal processing used in the non-destructive diagnostics of mechanical and electrical properties of high-voltage electrical machines. Traditional and less traditional methods are given, which allow measuring the mechanical and electrical properties of these machines in order to determine their technical condition, including a description of their measurement methods. Separate chapters are devoted to the causes and methods of measuring and evaluating partial discharges arising in the insulation systems of high-voltage electrical machines. The following chapters provide an overview of the test methods used in the non-disassembly diagnostics of high-voltage transformers, rotary machines, high-voltage cables, insulators, surge arresters and circuit breakers. The book is intended for students of technical universities and experts in the field of non- destructive diagnostics of high-voltage electrical machines. The book was reviewed by Ing. Jiří Brázdil, Ph.D. MBA, Head of the HV laboratory of ORGREZ in the Czech Republic.
