Within the framework of wireless sensor networks, asymptotic results have been provided for the probability that a network realization will be connected. However, exact formulas for finite network deployments are missing. This dissertation solves selected connectivity problems arising in wireless sensor networks of finite size. We approach the problem through stochastic geometry and combinatorial techniques. The main topic considered in this dissertation is the connectivity of finite, randomly deployed, wireless sensor networks. The problem is to calculate the probability of connectivity given certain conditions like field of interest, number of node platforms deployed, type of infrastructure, and communication channel model. We provide analyses for multiple scenarios comprising one- and two-dimensional networks. For one-dimensional network deployments, exact formulas for the probability of connectivity are given when deterministic communication links are considered along infrastructure. We also present an analysis of a network composed of nodes having random communication radii and provide a formula for general distribution functions. For the two-dimensional network deployments approximate formulas for the probability of connectivity are provided. We consider deterministic and random communication links. In addition, we study the effects of partially connected wireless sensor network, where we allow the existence of few isolated node platforms and thus can improve other network metrics, like node energy consumption. Finally, we present an application of the obtained connectivity results. We focus on the extension of network functional lifetime through a topology control scheme. The scheme is based on the correlation of information obtained by the node platforms in the deployment. This analysis helps to illustrate the use and relevance of our results when designing wireless sensor networks.

However, most protocols and algorithms for such networks are based on the ideal model Unit Disk Graph (UDG) model or do not assume any model. Furthermore, many results assume the knowledge of location information of the network. In practice, sensor networks often deviate from the UDG model significantly. It is not uncommon to observe stable long links that are more than five times longer than unstable short links in real wireless networks. A more general network model, the quasi unit-disk graph (quasi-UDG) model, captures much better the characteristics of wireless networks. However, the understanding of the properties of general quasi-UDGs has been very limited, which is impeding the design of key network protocols and algorithms. In this dissertation we study the properties for general wireless sensor networks and develop new topological/geometrical techniques for wireless sensor networking. We assume neither the ideal UDG model nor the location information of the nodes. Instead we work on the more general quasi-UDG model and focus on figuring out the relationship between the geometrical properties and the topological properties of wireless sensor networks. Based on such relationships we develop algorithms that can compute useful substructures (planar subnetworks, boundaries, etc.). We also present direct applications of the properties and substructures we constructed including routing, data storage, topology discovery, etc. We prove that wireless networks based on quasi-UDG model exhibit nice properties like separabilities, existences of constant stretch backbones, etc. We develop efficient algorithms that can obtain relatively dense planar subnetworks for wireless sensor networks. We also present efficient routing protocols and balanced data storage scheme that supports ranged queries. We present algorithmic results that can also be applied to other fields (e.g., information management). Based on divide and conquer and improved color coding technique, we develop algorithms for path, matching and packing problem that significantly improve previous best algorithms. We prove that it is unlikely for certain problems in operation science and information management to have any relatively effective algorithm or approximation algorithm for them.

A wireless sensor network can be seen as a distributed computer, where spatially deployed sensor nodes are in charge of gathering measurements from the environment to compute a given function. The research areas for wireless sensor networks extend from the design of small, reliable hardware to low-complexity algorithms and energy saving communication protocols. Distributed consensus algorithms are low-complexity iterative schemes that have received increased attention in different fields due to a wide range of applications, where neighboring nodes communicate locally to compute the average of an initial set of measurements. Energy is a scarce resource in wireless sensor networks and therefore, the convergence of consensus algorithms, characterized by the total number of iterations until reaching a steady-state value, is an important topic of study. This PhD thesis addresses the problem of convergence and optimization of distributed consensus algorithms for the estimation of parameters in wireless sensor networks. The impact of quantization noise in the convergence is studied in networks with fixed topologies and symmetric communication links. In particular, a new scheme including quantization is proposed, whose mean square error with respect to the average consensus converges. The limit of the mean square error admits a closed-form expression and an upper bound for this limit depending on general network parameters is also derived. The convergence of consensus algorithms in networks with random topology is studied focusing particularly on convergence in expectation, mean square convergence and almost sure convergence. Closed-form expressions useful to minimize the convergence time of the algorithm are derived from the analysis. Regarding random networks with asymmetric links, closed-form expressions are provided for the mean square error of the state assuming equally probable uniform link weights, and mean square convergence to the statistical mean of the initial measurements is shown. Moreover, an upper bound for the mean square error is derived for the case of different probabilities of connection for the links, and a practical scheme with randomized transmission power exhibiting an improved performance in terms of energy consumption with respect to a fixed network with the same consumption on average is proposed. The mean square error expressions derived provide a means to characterize the deviation of the state vector with respect to the initial average when the instantaneous links are asymmetric. A useful criterion to minimize the convergence time in random networks with spatially correlated links is considered, establishing a sufficient condition for almost sure convergence to the consensus space. This criterion, valid also for topologies with spatially independent links, is based on the spectral radius of a positive semidefinite matrix for which we derive closed-form expressions assuming uniform link weights. The minimization of this spectral radius is a convex optimization problem and therefore, the optimum link weights minimizing the convergence time can be computed efficiently. The expressions derived are general and apply not only to random networks with instantaneous directed topologies but also to random networks with instantaneous undirected topologies. Furthermore, the general expressions can be particularized to obtain known protocols found in literature, showing that they can be seen as particular cases of the expressions derived in this thesis.

Book excerpt: In the last decade we have seen the emergence of a new inter-disciplinary field concentrating on the understanding large networks which are dynamic, large, open, and have a structure that borders order and randomness. The field of Complex Networks has helped us better understand many complex phenomena such as spread of decease, protein interaction, social relationships, to name but a few. The field of Complex Networks has received a major boost caused by the widespread availability of huge network data resources in the last years. One of the most surprising findings is that real networks behave very distinct from traditional assumptions of network theory. Traditionally, real networks were supposed to have a majority of nodes of about the same number of connections around an average. This is typically modeled by random graphs. But modern network research could show that the majority of nodes of real networks is very low connected, and, by contrast, there exists some nodes of very extreme connectivity (hubs). The current theories coupled with the availability of data makes the field of Complex Networks (sometimes called Network Sciences) one of the most promising interdisciplinary disciplines of today. This sample of works in this book gives as a taste of what is in the horizon such controlling the dynamics of a network and in the network, using social interactions to improve urban planning, ranking in music, and the understanding knowledge transfer in influence networks.
