Book excerpt: To design, develop, and simulate an automated procedure for passively tracking sperm whales in three- dimensions, using natural vocalizations recorded on two towed arrays, deployed either alone or in conjunction with dive tags. The algorithms would permit automated tracking of multiple animals over complete dive cycles, producing statistically significant sample sizes for evaluation of controlled-exposure studies. When used in conjunction with a dive tag, the algorithm would permit better resolution tracking of animals detected on both the tag in array, effectively increasing the number of animals tracked by the tag.

Book excerpt: On Mesoscale Population Study cruises during summers 2004 and 2005 aboard the sailboat Summer Breeze, researchers from the Sperm Whale Seismic Study (SWSS) surveyed for sperm whales along the continental slope of the northern Gulf of Mexico. SWSS scientists tracked 35 groups of whales during these two summers, recording locations where they did and did not encounter whales. Whales were encountered during both summers at approximately the same frequency (19 groups in 38 survey days in 2004; 16 groups in 29 survey days in 2005), but fluke photo-identifications indicated that 85% of individuals encountered during summer 2005 had never been previously identified in the Gulf throughout 10 years of cetacean research. Composition and distribution of these groups also varied between summers. Oceanographic conditions at the edge of the continental shelf differed between 2004 and 2005, which may have modified the usual trophic cascade that begins with near-surface primary production to create local aggregations of prey at the depths where sperm whales forage. Sperm whales are apex, mesopelagic predators, but have been shown to associate with surface primary productivity over large spatial scales and time scales of months to years. The purpose of this thesis was to look for relationships between sperm whale presence and surface oceanography on smaller spatial and shorter temporal scales. Surface ocean color from NASA's Moderate Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and surface dynamic height from NASA's Earth orbital altimeters were evaluated to assess habitat occupied by sperm whales. Passive acoustic monitoring along transect lines for sperm whale clicks permitted determination of sperm whale presence and absence. Sperm whale encounters were in general associated with negative sea surface height and enhanced sea surface chlorophyll (SSC), especially in or near areas where local SSC anomaly was produced by cyclone induced upwelling of nutrients or from coastal water advected off-margin. During summer 2004, SSC was generally high all along the upper continental slope whereas summer 2005 saw relatively low SSC along the upper continental slope. Whales encountered in this study were most highly correlated with SSC two weeks after the initial development of locally highest-SSC anomalies.

Book excerpt: The U.S. Minerals Management Service (MMS) manages the oil and gas resources of the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) in a manner that seeks "to ensure that all activities on the OCS are conducted with appropriate environmental protection and impact mitigation" (USDOI, MMS 2002). To this end, MMS sponsors studies to evaluate environmental impacts of OCS activities and to identify appropriate mitigation measures. Since the 1970s, one focus has been on the potential for impact of anthropogenic noise on marine mammals. Marine mammals are adapted to use sound in the ocean for communication, navigation, localizing and using prey, and sensing of the environment. These animals have evolved in an ocean that is filled with natural sounds. Humans began to introduce significant additional sound sources with the advent of the industrial age in the mid-nineteenth century. As the power and number of these sound sources increased, the potential for impacting marine mammals increased as well. Of concern are the potentials for negative behavioral and physiological responses to human-generated sound, at both the individual and population levels.

Book excerpt: This title brings to light the discoveries and insights into the lives of many marine species made possible over the last decade by passive acoustic recorders (PAR). Pop-ups, ARF, HARP, EAR, Bprobe, C-POD Atag, and Dtag are the acronyms of some of the many PARs that have changed our understanding of how marine animals live and strive in the ocean. Various types of PARs are used by different investigators in different areas of the world. These recorders have accumulated copious amounts of very important data, unveiling previously unknown information about large marine animals. Temporal, seasonal and spatial distribution patterns have been uncovered for many marine species. There have been many discoveries, new understandings and insights into how these animals live in and utilize the ocean and the importance of acoustics in their lives. Listening Within the Ocean summarizes these important discoveries, providing both a valuable resource for researchers and enjoyable reading for non-professionals interested in marine life.

Book excerpt: The subpopulation of sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) in the Mediterranean Sea is presently list as Endangered. This study is an attempt to provide detailed data on sperm whale Bachelor Groups surrounding Ischia, Italy in the Tyrrhenian Sea (Mediterranean Sea). 24 hours, 38 minutes, and 38 seconds of sperm whale Bachelor Group acoustic data was analyzed in order to describe acoustic repertoire, classify behavioral associations to acoustic types, and identify habitat-use. The data showed that the acoustic repertoire of sperm whale Bachelor Groups is dominated by Usual Clicks. Additionally, a click type that maintains an inter-click interval (ICI) in between Usual Clicks and Creaks was identified during acoustic analysis and named Transition Clicks. Acoustic events were categorized into Single Code and Combination Code events; representing situations where one acoustic code was heard versus situations where two or more different acoustic codes were heard simultaneously. Analysis revealed that Single Code events represented 71.25% of the sperm whale Bachelor Group acoustic repertoire. The Usual Click/ Transition Click combination represented 73.74% of Combination Code events. A significant difference was shown between time spent in Single Code versus time spent in Combination Code for Usual Clicks and for Squeals. Acoustic repertoire data revealed the possibility for a strong collaborative acoustic structure and a speculated strategy for evolutionary success among sperm whale Bachelor Groups in Ischia, Italy. Additionally, the study showed that sperm whale Bachelor Groups spend 77.87% of the analyzed time engaged in orientation/searching/foraging behavior and 1.09% engaged in socializing behaviors. Event maps revealed a hotspot of sperm whale Bachelor Group activity in the waters to the northwest of Ischia, Italy, within the submarine Canyon of Cuma, and outside of the boundaries for the Regno di Nettuno Marine Protected Area (MPA). It is recommended that the results of this study be utilized in extending the Regno di Nettuno MPA to include the hotspot, and possible critical area, for sperm whale Bachelor Groups. The results of this study and published literature of the sperm whales in this area could be utilized to create population-specific management strategies for more effective measures in ending population decrease and preserving the species. Further research should be carried out to analyze in detail the role of Transition Clicks in sperm whale acoustics and the possibility of a collaborative acoustic structure that has yet to be displayed in any other sperm whale population worldwide.

Book excerpt: The Gulf of Mexico is home to two of the world's ten busiest ports by cargo volume, the Port of New Orleans and the Port of Houston; and in 2008, these ports hosted a combined 14,000 ships, a number which is likely only to increase. Past research shows that this increase in shipping worldwide has historically lead to an increase in ambient noise level of 3-5dB per decade. Sperm whales in the Gulf of Mexico are considered a genetically distinct, resident population. They have a preference for the Louisiana-Mississippi Shelf region which directly overlaps with the entrance to the Mississippi and the Port of New Orleans. Disruptions from vessel noise could influence feeding and breeding patterns essential to the health of the stock. Data used in this analysis were collected continuously over 36 days in the summer of 2001 from bottom moored Navy Environmental Acoustic Recording System (EARS) buoys. Results showed a significant difference (P

Book excerpt: This research was carried out in support of fieldwork in the Gulf of Mexico in summers 2004 and 2005 as part of the multidisciplinary Sperm Whale Seismic Study (SWSS). Important aspects of SWSS research include oceanographic habitat characterization and studies of sperm whale foraging and diving patterns. During the SWSS 2005 cruise, acoustic volume backscatter data were collected using a 38 kHz ADCP for comparison with XBT, MODIS ocean color data, and whale dive profiles extrapolated from analysis of towed passive acoustic hydrophone array recordings of whale vocalizations. This unique data set, collected from a cyclonic eddy, was compared with non-upwelling conditions surveyed in the western Gulf and the Mississippi Canyon in summer 2004. My focus was to examine the relationship between acoustic backscatter intensity from the deep scattering layer (DSL; usually 400-600 m deep) and the depths to which whales dived. The results of the study investigate differences in DSL characteristics between divergent zones and non-divergent zones, and examine connections relating to variations in sperm whale dive patterns. The analysis of 38 kHz ADCP data showed that there were significant differences in some characteristics of the main DSL dependent on time of day. There were no significant differences in characteristics of the main DSL between divergent and non-divergent areas or between 2004 and 2005. The comparison of the 38 kHz ADCP and the 70 kHz Simrad echosounder data yielded a relationship of 4 ADCP counts for every 1 dB of Sv. This relationship was a promising start to a potential calibration for the ADCP instrument. Lastly, the analysis of localized sperm whale dive profiles identified three basic dive profiles; Deep (> 800 m), Mid-water dives to DSL depths (500 - 800 m) and Shallow (
