Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this paper is to present the different methods used to design and analyse solid rocket motor nozzles. In a preliminary phase, the typical requirements and parameters required to design a nozzle are discussed. Afterwards the general process of th design is detailed: nozzle configuration, aerodynamic contour design, selection and sizing of liners and insulators, etc. In a second step, the different systems used to control the motor thrust or to improve the performance, such as extendible exit cone, are presented. To conclude the presentation, the different steps of the nozzle analysis are presented. For each step (aerodynamic, thermal and structural) the different computer programs used are presented (principle, possibilities, limitations).

Book Synopsis Heat Conduction and Stress Analysis of Solid Propellant Rocket Motor Nozzles by : John J. Brisbane
Download or read book Heat Conduction and Stress Analysis of Solid Propellant Rocket Motor Nozzles written by John J. Brisbane and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of three computer programs has been developed that greatly simplify the stress analysis of solid propellant rocket nozzles. The first of these programs is an axisymmetric finite element heat conduction program that is used to generate the time dependent temperature distributions in the nozzle. The second program is an axisymmetric finite element stress analysis program which uses the temperature distribution determined by the first program in addition to mechanical loadings to determine the stresses, strains, and displacements throughout the nozzle. The third program is a data reduction program which has, as output, plots of stress and strain contours in the nozzle. The heat conduction and stress analysis programs may be used separately if desired. If they are used together, information is passed from the first to the second by magnetic tape. (Author).

Download or read book Solid Rocket Propulsion Technology written by A. Davenas and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 623 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, a translation of the French title Technologie des Propergols Solides, offers otherwise unavailable information on the subject of solid propellants and their use in rocket propulsion. The fundamentals of rocket propulsion are developed in chapter one and detailed descriptions of concepts are covered in the following chapters. Specific design methods and the theoretical physics underlying them are presented, and finally the industrial production of the propellant itself is explained. The material used in the book has been collected from different countries, as the development of this field has occurred separately due to the classified nature of the subject. Thus the reader not only has an overall picture of solid rocket propulsion technology but a comprehensive view of its different developmental permutations worldwide.
Book Synopsis AN INVESTIGATION AND FEASIBILITY DEMONSTRATION OF NOZZLES FOR RESTARTABLE SOLID ROCKET MOTORS. by :
Download or read book AN INVESTIGATION AND FEASIBILITY DEMONSTRATION OF NOZZLES FOR RESTARTABLE SOLID ROCKET MOTORS. written by and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analytical and empirical studies were conducted to define and investigate problems associated with restartable solid propellant rocket nozzles. Thermal analysis covered the complete temperature history from startup through cooldown of the duty cycle. In addition to conventional convection, conduction, and radiation, the effects of the pyrolysis gases of charring ablators were included. The structural analysis included the investigation of the thermo-elastic behavior of cylindrical and washer inserts, the existence of plastic zones, the effects of contact pressures in stacked washer inserts, and the effects of property degradation of tungsten due to grain growth. The materials investigation included tungsten-carbon reactions, tungsten grain growth and the resulting effects on properties, and the high temperature c- direction compressive deformation of pyrolytic graphite. Rocket nozzle firings were used for verification of analyses and further problem definition. It was found that the strength of tungsten is degraded by 50% or more with very slight grain growth. Large permanent c-direction compressive deformations are attainable in pyrolytic graphite above 2600 C with stresses of 7000 psi in 30 sec. Ablation of char-forming insulators provides the principal mode of cooldown by the pyrolysis process and by heat transfer to the resulting gases as they leave the nozzle. Radiation was found to be an order of magnitude lower in significance.

This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes results from the nozzle thermal analysis contract which has been performed to support NASA/Marshall Space Flight Center in the development of the Advanced Solid Rocket Motor (ASRM). The emphasis of this study has been directed to four potential problem areas of the nozzle. These areas are the submerged nozzle region containing the flex seal, the nozzle entrance region, the material interface region in the nozzle exit cone, and the aft region of the exit cone. This study was limited throughout by inadequate material response models, especially for the polyisoprene flex seal and the low density carbon phenolic used in the exit cone. Thermal response and particle erosion calculations were performed for each of the potential problem areas. Results from these studies showed excessive erosion (large negative safety margins) to occur in the flex seal and nozzle entrance regions. The exit cone was found to be marginally adequate (near zero safety margins) and the material interface region was found not to be a problem. Book Synopsis Internal Environment of Solid Rocket Nozzles by : F. C. Price
Download or read book Internal Environment of Solid Rocket Nozzles written by F. C. Price and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was conducted of solid propellant rocket motor nozzle environment to implement nozzle design methods. Cold flow studies with models plus hot firing tests for particle impingement and particle cloud radiation are to be used to characterize heat flux rates throughout the nozzle. This report describes the hardware buildup and schedule of heat flux tests on a molybdenum nozzle with hydrogen, oxygen, water, and varying amounts of alumina. Cold flow technique development has shown interesting particle impingement effects as a function of modeling system design and nozzle shape. The implied full scale particle impingement rates are listed for the first two cases studied. A complete report is given on a program studying radiation of a hydrogen-oxygen-alumina plume from a one-inch diameter throatless engine. High emissivity values are indicated for all but the smallest engines. (Author).
