Book excerpt: In 1968, the government initiated a smallholder tea development program in which all aspects of smallholder tea marketing and trade were turned over to the Tanzania Tea Authority which assumed a wide array of responsibilities. The Authority promoted smallholder tea production. Most of the smallholder tea leaf went to the eight Tea Authority-owned factories for processing, and the rest to factories owned by the estates. Despite its apparent success, there were numerous signs of distress in the smallholder sector. This note describes the constraints and challenges faced by the production of tea in Tanzania.

Book excerpt: Focussing on a Fieldwork study of the West Usambaras in Tanzania, this study, first published in 1990, deals with processes of class formation and capitalist accumulation, and the dynamics of rural poverty and gender relations. Arguing that rural differentiation is systematically reinforced by the socialist state, the authors offer a critique of government intervention and discuss alternative, more effective forms of policy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the smallholder tea economy and regional development opportunities in India. It first gives a conceptual overview of Plantations and Smallholders in the Tea Economy including some comparisons and examples from Smallholders tea development in Afro-Asian countries like Sri Lanka, Kenya, Nepal, Bangladesh, Indonesia. The spatiotemporal analysis of the growth and development of smallholders in India and its tea producing states is then analyzed in more detail with highlights on the production, tea area, estimated employment, livelihood pattern, and market structure in relation to government policies and programmes. Two major tea producing states of India, i.e., Assam and West Bengal are then discussed in more detail (farm size, land relations, and trade relations between Bought Leaf Factories and Smallholders in both the states along with some bottom-up development initiatives). In these regions, smallholders have emerged as sizable presences in the tea industry in 1990s. In a next step, the growth of Industrial Development Cooperative (INDCO) Tea Factories in Nilgiris of Tamil Nadu in the Post-Reform period is analyzed. The introduction and growth of SHG model in plantations by Tea Board in India and their success stories, as well as the policies like Tea Marketing Control Order, 2003 and 2015 are examined and analyzed. The book concludes with the policy suggestions and an in-depth analysis of alternatives to overcome the current crisis. Hence, the book fills the research gap in the tea sector and is helpful for practitioners, policy planners, academics and University libraries, government agencies, and the regulatory body like Tea Board of India. Apart from them, the book is of great help in Smallholder Tea Associations and Federations, SHGs and Cooperatives, NGOs which exist in tea supply chain and also work for the unorganised sector in India. The book is a conglomerate of information and database developed from various secondary and primary sources and illustrated through case studies. It can be a useful document for better planning, policy making, and strategies for local economic development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tea is a unique crop and, incidentally, a very interesting and attractive one. The tea bush, its cultivation and harvesting do not fit into any typical cropping pattern. Moreover, its processing and marketing are specific to tea. Thus the Tea Industry stands apart and constitutes a self contained entity. This is reflected in the title given to this book, Tea: Cultivation to consumption, and its treatment of the subject. The book is logically planned - starting with the plant itself and finishing with the traditional'cuppa'. Every aspect of tea production is covered, inevitably some in greater detail than others. However, it gives an authentic and comprehensive picture of the tea industry. The text deals in detail with cultural practices and research, where desirable, on a regional basis. The technology of tea cultivation and processing has been developed within the industry, aided by applied research which was largely financed by the tea companies themselves. This contributed to a technically competent industry but tended to bypass the more academic and fundamental investigations which might bring future rewards. The sponsorship of research has now widened and the range and depth of tea research has increased accordingly. The editors and authors of this book have played their part in these recent developments which are well reported in the book.
