Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper concerns an analytical study of molecular mixing and finite rate chemical reactions in an infinite row of vortices representing a mixing layer. Diffusion equations for reacting and non-reacting species are solved locally in the Lagrangian frame of reference following material elements. The flowfield is a given for the problem. The concentration distributions in the vortex structure are composed from these analytical solutions and presented for several cases. The probability density functions constructed from these distributions are compared with the mixing layer experiments. For the cases studied, the comparisons indicate encouraging agreement for the reacting flow case. However, some differences are present for the non-reacting flows. Keywords: Turbulent reacting flows; Molecular mixing, Reaction in vortical structures.

Bourne, Visiting Professor, University of Birmingham, UK and Emeritus Professor, ETH Zurich, Switzerland The way in which reagents are mixed can greatly influence the yield and range of products formed by fast, multiple chemical reactions. Understanding this phenomenon enables chemists to carry out reactions more selectively, make better use of raw materials and simplify product workup and separation. Turbulent Mixing and Chemical Reactions presents a balanced treatment of the connection between mixing and reaction. It contains theoretical aspects, experimental methods and expected results as well as worked examples to illustrate problem solving. This book will be of interest to all scientists involved in chemical engineering, physical chemistry, and synthetic chemists in the fine chemical and pharmaceuticals industry.

This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiments and simulations were performed to examine the complex processes that occur in Rayleigh-Taylor driven mixing. A water channel facility was used to examine a buoyancy-driven Rayleigh-Taylor mixing layer. Measurements of fluctuating density statistics and the molecular mixing parameter [theta] were made for Pr = 7 (hot/cold water) and Sc ~ 103 (salt/fresh water) cases. For the hot/cold water case, a high-resolution thermocouple was used to measure instantaneous temperature values that were related to the density field via an equation of state. For the Sc ~ 103 case, the degree of molecular mixing was measured by monitoring a diffusion-limited chemical reaction between the two fluid streams. The degree of molecular mixing was quantified by developing a new mathematical relationship between the amount of chemical product formed and the density variance /pr2. Comparisons between the Sc = 7 and Sc ~ 103 cases are used to elucidate the dependence of [theta] on the Schmidt number. To further examine the turbulent mixing processes, a direct numerical simulation (DNS) model of the Sc = 7 water channel experiment was constructed to provide statistics that could not be experimentally measured. To determine the key physical mechanisms that influence the growth of turbulent Rayleigh-Taylor mixing layers, the budgets of the exact mean mass fraction ~m1, turbulent kinetic energy ~E", turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate ~e", mass fraction variance ~m1"2, and mass fraction variance dissipation rate ~x" equations were examined. The budgets of the unclosed turbulent transport equations were used to quantitatively assess the relative magnitudes of different production, dissipation, transport, and mixing processes. Finally, three-equation (~E"~-e"~-m1"2) and four-equation (~E"~-e"~-m1"2~-X") turbulent mixing models were developed and calibrated to predict the degree of molecular mixing within a Rayleigh-Taylor mixing layer. The DNS data sets were used to assess the validity of and calibrate the turbulent viscosity, gradient-diffusion, and scale-similarity closures a priori. The modeled transport equations were implemented in a one-dimensional numerical simulation code and were shown to accurately reproduce the experimental and DNS results a posteriori. The calibrated model parameters from the Sc = 7 case were used as the starting point for determining the appropriate model constants for the mass fraction variance ~m1"2 transport equation for the Sc ~ 103 case.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The homogenization of single phase gases or liquids with chemical reactive components by mixing belongs to one of the oldest basic operations applied in chemical engineering. The mixing process is used as an essential step in nearly all processes of the chemical industry as well as the pharmaceutical and food ind- tries. Recent experimentally and theoretically based results from research work lead to a fairly good prediction of the velocity fields in differend kinds of mixers, where as predictions of simultaneously proceeding homogeneous chemical re- tions, are still not reliable in a similar way. Therefore the design of equipment for mixing processes is still derived from measurements of the so called “mixing time” which is related to the applied methods of measurement and the special - sign of the test equipment itself. The cooperation of 17 research groups was stimulated by improved modern methods for experimental research and visualization, for simulations and nume- cal calculations of mixing and chemical reactions in micro and macro scale of time and local coordinates. The research work was financed for a six years period within the recently finished Priority Program of the German Research Foundation (DFG) named “Analysis, modeling and numerical prediction of flow-mixig with and without chemical reactions (SPP 1141)”. The objective of the investigations was to improve the prediction of efficiencies and selectivities of chemical re- tions on macroscopic scale.

Book excerpt: Turbulence, mixing and the mutual interaction of turbulence and chemistry continue to remain perplexing and impregnable in the fron tiers of fluid mechanics. The past ten years have brought enormous advances in computers and computational techniques on the one hand and in measurements and data processing on the other. The impact of such capabilities has led to a revolution both in the understanding of the structure of turbulence as well as in the predictive methods for application in technology. The early ideas on turbulence being an array of complicated phenomena and having some form of reasonably strong coherent struc ture have become well substantiated in recent experimental work. We are still at the very beginning of understanding all of the aspects of such coherence and of the possibilities of incorporating such structure into the analytical models for even those cases where the thin shear layer approximation may be valid. Nevertheless a distinguished body of "eddy chasers" has come into existence. The structure of mixing layers which has been studied for some years in terms of correlations and spectral analysis is also getting better understood. Both probability concepts such as intermittency and conditional sampling as well as the concept of large scale structure and the associated strain seem to indicate possibilities of distinguishing and synthesizing 'engulfment' and molecular mixing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molecular mixing measurements are performed for a high Schmidt number (Sc (almost equal to) 103), small Atwood number (A (almost equal to) 7.5 x 10−4) buoyancy-driven turbulent Rayleigh-Taylor mixing layer in a water channel facility. Salt was added to the top stream to create the desired density difference. The degree of molecular mixing was measured as a function of time by monitoring a diffusion-limited chemical reaction between the two fluid streams. The pH of each stream was modified by the addition of acid or alkali such that a local neutralization reaction occurred as the two fluids molecularly mixed. The progress of this neutralization reaction was tracked by the addition of phenolphthalein - a pH-sensitive chemical indicator - to the acidic stream. Accurately calibrated backlit optical techniques were used to measure the average concentration of the colored chemical indicator. Comparisons of chemical product formation for pre-transitional buoyancy- and shear-driven mixing layers are given. It is also shown that experiments performed at different equivalence ratios (acid/alkali concentration) can be combined to obtain a mathematical relationship between the colored product formed and the density variance. This relationship was used to obtain high-fidelity, quantitative measures of the degree of molecular mixing which are independent of probe resolution constraints. The dependence of such mixing parameters on the Schmidt and Reynolds numbers is examined by comparing the current Sc (almost equal to) 103 measurements with Sc = 0.7 gas-phase and Pr = 7 liquid-phase measurements. This comparison indicates that the Schmidt number has a large effect on the bulk quantity of mixed fluid at small Reynolds numbers Re{sub h}
