Book excerpt: This thesis uses the microdebitage recovered from the La Prele Mammoth Site in Converse County, Wyoming to investigate the dominant chipped stone working behavior that took place there. The project begins with an analysis of modern experimental microdebitage made from the same toolstone materials found at La Prele. These experimental data show that analysts may be able to tell the difference between early-stage and late-stage lithic reduction via the proportion of complete flakes in each collection unit of an archaeological site. Lithic analysis of microdebitage from Block B of La Prele shows that the people who occupied this area of the site likely arrived with complete or nearly complete tools that they finished and/or resharpened while living there. Lastly, the spatial distribution of microdebitage recovered from Block B may serve as an additional line of evidence that there is a house structure present at La Prele. Informed by an experimental component, this analysis of the chipped stone assemblage from Block B of La Prele provides support for the idea that highly mobile PaleoIndigenous peoples likely built physical structures as they moved around.
