Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 32 (thesis year 1987) a total of 12,483 theses titles from 22 Canadian and 176 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 32 reports theses submitted in 1987, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A vertical magnetic intensity map based on 481 stations spaced an average of one-quarter mile is presented for the southern portion of the Elsinore Fault from Banner to Vallecito Valley. A very-low-frequency electromagnetic (VLF-EM) survey encompassing 917 stations in 35 miles of line also covers the area from Banner to Vallecito Valley. The results confirm the placement of the Elsinore Fault through Ranchita and Rodriguez Canyons but to the south it is further to the east in the Vallecito Mountains rather than in Mason Valley, as generally mapped. The fault is apparently continuous through the study area with numerous short segments paralleling it to the southwest. At Campbell Grade to the south the Elsinore Fault is apparently cut by two northeast trending faults. Vertical throws of up to 1800 feet have been calculated on the Elsinore Fault, with the northeast side of the fault upthrown. Discovery of the Chariot Canyon Fault was made using both geophysical methods. This fault joins the Elsinore Fault just north of Banner and was traced geophysically along the entire length of Chariot Canyon. Reconnaissance geologic mapping traces it south to Campo and it probably extends across the border into Mexico. Eight kilometers of right-lateral separation is postulated based on distribution of Julian Schist. A vertical throw of 600 feet was calculated on the fault. Mason Valley may be underlain by gabbro apophyses which tore apart the older Triassic and Jurassic rocks, elevating them on the valley flanks where they now shed sedimentary rocks into the valley, covering the gabbro. Thirty-six aftershocks of the September 13, 1973, magnitude 4.8, Agua Caliente earthquake, were studied and show that the southern branch of the Elsinore Fault is active. The focal mechanisms are consistent with right-lateral strike-slip along the southern branch with northeast dip in the main aftershock area and southwest dip just south of the main area. Hypocentral locations support these conclusions. Based on the length of the Elsinore Fault the maximum probable event is a magnitude 7.5-7.6. A magnitude 7.5-7.6 event can be expected once every 100 years and would produce a ground acceleration in San Diego of 0.17-0.18 g. The tectonic style of the Elsinore Fault changes from strike-slip near Lake Elsinore to dip-slip in Vallecito Valley. This change may be attributed to binding up of the fault at Campbell Grade. The eastward bulge in the northern branch may be due to deformation of crustal blocks from continuing stress or to left-lateral offsets on northeast trending faults. Right-lateral motion which had not taken place on the northern branch because of its being bound, is now occurring on the southern branch which appears younger and follows the general trend of the fault system. Thirty-two kilometers of right-lateral offset documented on the Elsinore Fault in the Los Angeles basin area, which occurred mostly during the Miocene, may have been taken up by the Chariot Canyon Fault and other faults associated with the Elsinore Fault system.

Book excerpt: The Elsinore fault zone in eastern San Diego and western Imperial Counties, California is an active member of the San Andreas fault system which displays an abundance of tectonically produced features such as right-laterally offset and deflected streams, offset channel walls, shutter ridges, notches, benches, and fault scarps. The total amount of right-lateral strike separation across the fault could be as great as 8 km but is probably 4 or 5 km. Much of the motion is being taken up by drag folding south of the fault arid by drag folding and possible rotation north of the fault in the Sawtooth Ridge area. Abundant evidence for right-lateral strike-slip faulting is present along the Elsinore fault within the Peninsular Ranges and on the floor of the Imperial Valley. However, near the boundary between these two provinces, in the Carrizo Valley-Tierra Blanca Mountain area, evidence for horizontal motion is greatly reduced while there is abundant evidence for dip-slip faulting. The horizontal motion in this area may be masked by a large normal component, rotation of blocks and motion being distributed between more than one fault. The geomorphically most active stretch of the Elsinore fault within the study area lies along the southwest front of the Coyote Mountains on the floor of the Imperial Valley. Detailed studies here indicate repeated and frequent episodes of dominantly dextral strike-slip faulting during the Holocene. Offset alluvial channels, channel walls and bars suggest slip events of about 1-2 meters each with the last two events averaging about 1.4 meters each. Soils developed on faulted alluvium were assessed in terms of soil morphology and carbonate accumulation to provide temporal constraints on the ages of the surface. Virtually no soil development of the most recently faulted deposits indicate a major earthquake within the last several hundred years with several additional events recorded in other late Holocene deposits. A clear distinction is evident between soils formed before and after the change from woodland to desert scrub communities which occurred between about 8,000-12,000 yr BP in the deserts of the southwestern U.S. Thus, Holocene alluvial fan channel deposits which are offset 41 m along the southwest front of the Coyote Mountains yield a Holocene slip-rate of about 3.4-5.5 mm per year and a recurrence interval for large events of about 350 " 125 years.

Book excerpt: This study area provides a unique opportunity to study the intersection of the Elsinore and West Salton detachment faults in southern California, effusing warm springs, and alteration products in the midst of the fault intersection. Structural mapping and compiling previous maps supply an interpretation of the fault zone geometries within the Tierra Blanca Mountains. Geochemical analysis of the crystalline basement and altered protolith help determine the effects of faulting and fluid flow in the study area. In the Tierra Blanca Mountains, the Elsinore strike-slip fault system transitions from the double-stranded Julian segment and Earthquake Valley fault in the northwest, to the single-stranded Coyote Mountain segment in the southeast. A network of cross faults striking northeast connects the fault segments. The Coyote Mountain segment encounters the inactive West Salton detachment fault in the study area. The detachment fault is a barrier to fluid flow and exhibits primarily brittle deformation, while the Coyote Mountain segment is a conduit for fluid flow along the northeastern flank of the Tierra Blanca Mountains. The damage zone of the Coyote Mountain segment reaches widths up to 500 m and contains intense fracturing and subsidiary faults striking parallel to the main trace. The tonalite protolith is bleached, stained, and altered from water-rock interactions. The most intense bleaching is at a county park, where the protolith is altered to clays and zeolites while the mineralogy of the stained regions contains iron oxides and clinochlore in addition to quartz, Ca-rich albite, and biotite preserved from the protolith. The water chemistry at Agua Caliente hot springs shows the fluid is partially equilibrated. Groundwater temperatures likely reached 75-85℗ʻC at depths up to 2.14 km before rising to the surface. Frequent seismicity in the study region is related to the spring characteristics including water level, conductivity, and temperatures. Spring temperature and conductivity displayed three behaviors during the summer 2011 logging period, attributed to seasonal changes and most likely local seismicity as well. Conductivity seems to be the property most influenced by earthquake activity in the area. Changes in fluid chemistry between sampling periods may indicate mixture with other fluid sources.
