Book excerpt: Factor structures of Marine jet and helicopter pilot training measures and post-training performance criteria are compared and discussed. Academic ability, flying ability, and systems comprehension factors were common to both samples. Additional factors unique to each sample were also identified. Significant relationships were found between some performance criteria and some factors, although the criteria factor loadings were low. The results of the investigation are compared with previous factor analytic studies of aviation training measures that did not include post-training criterion data. (Author).

Book excerpt: The research objective was to determine the effectiveness of a new device concept for helicopter contact flight training and the usefulness of such a device for predicting performance during subsequent flight training. The device was a commercially available captive helicopter attached to a ground effects machine. Two experimental groups of trainees received 3 1/4 or 7 1/4 hours of device training prior to primary helicopter training. In comparison with control groups, both device trained groups (a) were significantly less likely to be eliminated from subsequent flight training for reasons of flying deficiency; (b) required less flight training to attain the proficiency required to solo the helicopter; and (c) received higher grades during early training. Trainees who performed well on the training device tended to perform well during subsequent flight training. Instructors using devices such as this one need not be proficient in the helicopter used for subsequent flight training. (Author).

Book excerpt: The objective of this study was to develop a more reliable system of evaluating helicopter pilots' flight performance by putting emphasis on standardized and objective measures, which would also provide a diagnostic record of student performance. This report is considered to be of primary interest to those organizations and agencies concerned with helicopter pilot training. The Pilot Performance Description Records (PPDR) have proved useful in administering check rides in primary helicopter training. The system provides a means of diagnosing specific sources of a student's end-of-phase deficiencies, by the detailed recording of his flight performance. The report serves to standardize pilot proficiency evaluation through reducing subjective differences in scoring procedures.

Book excerpt: Although a number of texts on helicopter aerodynamics have been written, few have explained how the various theories concerning rotorborne flight underpin practical flight test and evaluation. This book combines theoretical information on aerodynamics, stability, control and performance with details of evaluation methodologies and practical guidance on the conduct of helicopter flight tests. For each topic the relevant theory is explained briefly and followed by details of the practical aspects of testing a conventional helicopter. These include: * safety considerations * planning the tests * the most efficient way to conduct individual flights Where possible typical test results are presented and discussed. The book draws on the authors' extensive experience in flight test and flight test training and will appeal not only to professionals working in the area of rotorcraft test and evaluation, but also to helicopter pilots, rotorcraft designers and manufacturers and final year undergraduates of aeronautical engineering

This book was released on 1963 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to provide a system that would enable the Army to evaluate-objectively and contin uously-the quality of its primary helicopter training, work was initiated on a quality control system to be applied to the flight training course at the U.S. Army Primary Helicopter School (USAPHS), Camp Wolters, Tex. (now Fort Wolters). This report describes the manner in which the concepts and principles of quality control were applied at the USAPHS. The quality control sys tem herein described is characterized by: (1) Comprehensive and consistent testing of students' flight proficiency, (2) Accurate and equitable evaluation of the efficiency of training per sonnel, (3) A high degree of uniformity of flight-check procedures and scoring practices, and (4) Objective and detailed school standards by which individual students or classes may be evaluated. The Quality Control Program has been adopted by the USAPHS and has provided a satis factory solution to the problems of monitoring the flight training of Army primary helicopter students. Formal quality control methods may be applied profitably to a great variety of train ing programs. The basic prerequisites to their successful application are (1) a clear, detailed statement of the objectives of the training pro gram; and (2) the conscientious application of valid, reliable, and comprehensive proficiency measures reflecting the training objectives. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In nap-of-the-earth (NOE) flight a helicopter moves at less than treetop height and at variable airspeeds, using natural features for concealment--a dangerous procedure requiring great skill in flying and in navigation. This report identifies specific areas in which NOE training might be improved. Information from agencies and operational units provided data for analysis of NOE mission requirements, aircrew task analyses, and performance requirements for emergencies. Training objectives derived from the analyses were verified, compared with existing NOE training programs, and used to suggest improvements. Problems in navigation and orientation are the major hazard in NOE flight and training improvements should concentrate in these areas. Suggestions for ground-based training aids are visual (cinematic) simulation, a map-interpretation manual for NOE use, and techniques of ground-level orienteering. Suggestions for flight-based training are procedures such as more practice in re-orientation, equipment such as map displays, and policies such as flying over more varied terrain. Results of the analyses were validated by ARI's field research program and used as the basis for developing the experimental Map Interpretation Terrain Analysis Course (MITAC) now being evaluated at the Army Aviation School, Fort Rucker, Alabama.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this educational yet entertaining text, Jeff Koonce draws on his 44 years of pilot experience and 31 years as a professor of psychology and human factors engineering in addressing the questions of how to apply sound human factors principles to the training of pilots and to one's personal flying. The author discusses principles of human factors, and how they can be utilized in pilot training and evaluation. With a conversational tone, he also relates anecdotes, jokes, and truisms collected during his time as a flight instructor. He takes a positive approach to the subject, focusing on safety and good practice rather than on accidents. While problem areas are acknowledged, and the book points out how certain problems may result in mishaps, the author avoids focusing on individual accidents. Human Factors in the Training of Pilots is a must for pilots wanting to make a systematic study of the human factors issues behind safe flying, and for instructors or serious students needing an authoritative text.
