Book excerpt: The initial use of fracture mechanics to characterize crack growth by fatigue was by Paris. Since then, the application of fracture mechanics to fatigue problems has become routine. In the case of fatigue under mode I loading, the method of analysis, under conditions of constant amplitude and small-scale yielding, is well established. However, apart from the conditions of variable amplitude loading, large scale yielding, and short existing cracks, the procedures for analyzing fatigue under mode II and mixed-mode loading still have not been resolved. A general model, applicable to pure and mixed-mode fatigue crack growth, has been developed based on the unified model. The formulation of the general model is in terms of a power law relationship that is an extension of Paris. The experimental procedures for the measurement of mode II and mixed-mode fatigue crack growth, and verification of the proposed fatigue model, are dealt with herein. The verification has been confined to conditions of constant amplitude and small-scale yielding.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the currently available methods for predicting fatigue crack growth in structures do not consider effects due to mixed-mode loading. This is partly due to the limited information available concerning the fatigue crack growth under mixed mode loading. Previous investigations of mixed mode effects on fatigue crack growth have shown that under combined opening and in-plane shear loading, the cracks turn abruptly so that the in-plane shear mode is eliminated [1-3]. Very little data are generated before the crack curvature eliminates the mixed mode loading. The changing orientation of the crack during the test makes analysis of the problem difficult and may cloud the intrinsic fatigue crack growth rate behavior under mixed mode loading. Situations can exist in engineering structures in which cracks may grow in a self-similar manner even under the influence of mixed mode loading. Examples of such situations are radial cracks in bearing races [4] and transverse cracks in rotating shafts under shear and bending loads. The cracks may not change orientation because the in-plane shear component is fully reversed. It is necessary to understand the effects of mixed mode loading on fatigue crack growth in order to properly predict the behavior of these components.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fatigue crack growth behavior of the aluminum alloy 2024 is analyzed using the crack closure and an energy-based concept. The different test conditions studied include load ratio and environmental effects, crack growth retardation following a single overload, and crack propagation under block load tests. Crack opening loads using the compliance technique permit the effect of load ratio to be taken into account. After an overload, in the deceleration phase, the evolution of the crack opening load is not compatible with that of the crack growth rate. The measured crack opening levels under constant-amplitude loading conditions are comparable to those predicted under plane strain conditions for moderate ?K levels. It is shown that most of the effects usually attributed to closure can be successfully explained using energy concepts. In particular, it is shown that there exists a linear relationship between the crack growth rate and the energy dissipated per cycle at high growth rates, which is valid for both the environments studied, and it corresponds to a crack growth mechanism characterized by striation formation during each cycle. For lower growth rates a power law relationship can be proposed between these two parameters. The above-mentioned linear relationship holds also for the block loading conditions based on total energy dissipated per block. Certain experimental facts bring out the effect of closure on the energy dissipated. It is further shown that the possible existence of a mixed (Mode I and Mode II) mode crack opening at the crack tip has to be taken into account to correctly evaluate the energy dissipated near the crack tip.

It is well-known that engineering structures can fail due to cyclic loading. For instance, a cyclically time-varying loading reduces the structure strength and can provoke a fatigue failure consisting of three stages: (a) crack initiation (b) crack propagation and (c) catastrophic failure. Since last century many scientists have tried to understand the reasons for the above-mentioned failures and how to prevent them. This Handbook contains valuable contributions from leading experts within the international scientific community and covers many of the important problems associated with the fatigue phenomena in civil, mechanical and nuclear engineering.

Book excerpt: Although the majority of fatigue crack propagation studies have been concerned with pure Mode I loading situations, in practice many cracks in components may initially extend by fatigue under a combination of all three crack growth modes, and this initial period may predominate during the fatigue lifetime. In this paper, the threshold and growth behavior of cracks under various combinations of Mode I and Mode II crack tip displacements are studied, showing the effect of the T-stress in the biaxial specimen. Four materials (AISI 316 stainless steel, DTD 5120 aluminium alloy, Ti-6A1-4V, and 1Cr-Mo-V steel) have been tested. Two different experimental procedures, four-point bending and biaxial loading of a plate, are employed.

Book excerpt: Elastic-plastic crack growth under mixed Mode I and II in six types of aluminum alloys and three types of steel were investigated. The experimental study of fatigue crack growth in six types of the aluminum alloys and one type of the steel is performed on biaxially loaded eight-petal specimens (EPS). All specimens for biaxial loading contained inclined through thickness central cracks. Mixed Mode I/II static and fatigue crack growth experiments on the three types of steels and one type of the aluminum alloy used compact tension shear (CTS) specimens. Two approaches are developed for geometrical modeling of crack growth trajectories for the central notched and compact tension shear specimens respectively. The principal feature of such modeling is the determination of crack growth direction and the definition of crack length increment in this direction. On the basis of the analysis of the experimental data for the aluminum alloys and the steels an empirical crack reorientation criterion is suggested for both brittle and ductile materials. The damage process zone size concept is used for calculations of mixed-mode crack path. The influence of specimen geometry, biaxial loading and properties of the aluminum alloys and the steels on both crack growth direction and crack path at the macroscopic scale is discussed.

Book excerpt: An investigation has been made into the propagation of fatigue cracks in Mode III (anti-plane shear) in circumferentially notched cylindrical specimens subjected to cyclic torsion with and without small superimposed static tension loading. Studies were performed in a range of low-alloy steels of yield strengths varying from 310 to 1625 MN/m2, with the objective of characterizing both constant amplitude and variable amplitude Mode III crack growth behavior. Rates of fatigue crack propagation in Mode III were found to be characterized uniquely by the Mode III cyclic crack tip displacement (?CTDIII) or the plastic strain intensity range (??III) for elastic/plastic and fully plastic conditions, only if allowance was made for friction, rubbing, and interlocking between sliding crack surfaces (crack surface interference) through superposition of small axial loads. Such Mode III crack advance is envisaged in terms of Mode II shear coalescence of microcracks initiated at inclusions in the immediate vicinity of, and parallel to, the main crack front, consistent with micromechanical modelling studies incorporating either instantaneous crack tip displacement or damage accumulation arguments. The application of such models to the prediction of Mode III fatigue crack propagation behavior under both constant amplitude and simple variable amplitude loading spectra is briefly reviewed.
