Book excerpt: Comprehensive introduction to finite elastoplasticity, addressing various analytical and numerical analyses & including state-of-the-art theories Introduction to Finite Elastoplasticity presents introductory explanations that can be readily understood by readers with only a basic knowledge of elastoplasticity, showing physical backgrounds of concepts in detail and derivation processes of almost all equations. The authors address various analytical and numerical finite strain analyses, including new theories developed in recent years, and explain fundamentals including the push-forward and pull-back operations and the Lie derivatives of tensors. As a foundation to finite strain theory, the authors begin by addressing the advanced mathematical and physical properties of continuum mechanics. They progress to explain a finite elastoplastic constitutive model, discuss numerical issues on stress computation, implement the numerical algorithms for stress computation into large-deformation finite element analysis and illustrate several numerical examples of boundary-value problems. Programs for the stress computation of finite elastoplastic models explained in this book are included in an appendix, and the code can be downloaded from an accompanying website.

Book excerpt: Two numerical methods have been developed, using the assumed-stress hybrid finite-element model as a basis, for the elastic-plastic, small deflection analysis of structures under static loading. The two approaches chosen: the initial-strain approach and the initial stress-approach, result in a set of linear incremental simultaneous algebraic equations to be solved for each increment in applied external loading, with the global stiffness matrix remaining unchanged throughout the loading process and the effects of plasticity included as equivalent loading.

Book excerpt: Two models for analyzing the large deflection, linear elastic, static behavior of structures have been developed. They are the consistent and inconsistent assumed stress hybrid finite element models. The consistent model satisfies the entire stress equilibrium equation while the inconsistent model satisfies only the linear portion of this equation. These models are consistently derived from the Principle of Virtual Work for two separate coordinate frames: a stationary system and a convected (moving), updated system. Throughout the development 'correction' terms are maintained in all the functionals to minimize the approximate solution drifting away from the true solution. These correction terms correspond to checks on the stress equilibrium and compatibility in the reference state. The former check is recast into a more convenient form, for these models, than is usually used. Using a tangent stiffness approach (updated at every solution step) various incremental and incremental-iterative solution procedures are used. When used the check conditions are represented as equivalent loads. Careful attention is given to properly define various coordinate systems and reference frames. In conjunction with this the various definitions of stress and strain are discussed. Energy and work terms consistent with each system is considered in detail. The proper statements of the Principle of Virtual Work are defined.

Book excerpt: SITE MATERIALS, Structures, Fibers, Mathematical models, Stresses, Stress strain relations, Static loadsFinite element analysisA finite-element elastic-plastic incremental procedure for the static analysis of structures whose initially-isotropic material behavior may be elastic, perfectly-plastic or strain hardening has been developed and implemented in a breadboard computer program. The formulation is based on the assumed-stress hybrid model and the initial stress included by modifying the conventional hybrid functional, resulting in a consistently derived equivalent load vector due to the initial stress. Also included in the formulation is an equivalent load term corresponding to the possible compatibility mismatch at each incremental step. The formulation and the corresponding solution procedure are evaluated using a particular plane-stress example, and convergence of the solution is shown. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tremendous advances in computer technologies and methods have precipitated a great demand for refinements in the constitutive models of plasticity. Such refinements include the development of a model that would account for material anisotropy and produces results that compare well with experimental data. Key to developing such models-and to meeting many other challenges in the field- is a firm grasp of the principles of continuum mechanics and how they apply to the formulation of plasticity theory. Also critical is understanding the experimental aspects of plasticity and material anisotropy. Integrating the traditionally separate subjects of continuum mechanics and plasticity, this book builds understanding in all of those areas. Part I provides systematic, comprehensive coverage of continuum mechanics, from a review of Carteisian tensors to the relevant conservation laws and constitutive equation. Part II offers an exhaustive presentation of the continuum theory of plasticity. This includes a unique treatment of the experimental aspects of plasticity, covers anisotropic plasticity, and incorporates recent research results related to the endochronic theory of plasticity obtained by the author and his colleagues. By bringing all of these together in one book, Continuum Mechanics and Plasticity facilitates the learning of solid mechanics. Its readers will be well prepared for pursuing either research related to the mechanical behavior of engineering materials or developmental work in engineering analysis and design.
