The first part, Modeling, presents lumped- and distributed-parameter models that allow the dynamic behavior of the drill string to be characterized; a comprehensive mathematical model taking into account mechanical and electric components of the overall drilling system is also provided. The distributed nature of the system is accommodated by considering a system of wave equations subject to nonlinear boundary conditions; this model is transformed into a pair of neutral-type time-delay equations which can overcome the complexity involved in the analysis and simulation of the partial differential equation model. The second part, Analysis, is devoted to the study of the response of the system described by the time-delay model; important properties useful for analyzing system stability are investigated and frequency- and time-domain techniques are reviewed. Part III, Control, concerns the design of stabilizing control laws aimed at eliminating undesirable drilling vibrations; diverse control techniques based on infinite--dimensional system representations are designed and evaluated. The control proposals are shown to be effective in suppressing stick-slip and bit-bounce so that a considerable improvement of the overall drilling performance can be achieved. This self-contained book provides operational guidelines to avoid drilling vibrations. Furthermore, since the modeling and control techniques presented here can be generalized to treat diverse engineering problems, it constitutes a useful resource to researchers working on control and its engineering application in oil well drilling.

Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is the most used technique in analyzing vibration behavior of the drillstring by mesh discretizing of a continuous body into small elements. This thesis will study the dynamic behavior of different BHA designs for Manifa and Karan fields of Saudi Aramco to optimize the drilling operations. The FEA software that will be used to conduct these studies is called Vibrascope, which was developed by NOV. The software will determine the critical speeds of the drillstring that should be avoided to prevent resonance of the BHA, which will lead to severe downhole vibration.

The vibration of drillstring interferes with measurement collected while drilling. In severe cases, drillstring vibration will lead to wellbore instability that will result in an increase in the operation cost. In the late 1980's, a lot of studies and techniques were developed to mitigate drillstring vibration and downhole vibration measurements were introduced to the industry in two forms; real time measurements and memory devices measurements. A study of drillstring vibration of three different wells located in the Norwegian North Sea was analyzed. The bottom hole assembly (BHA) of two wells consisted of anti-vibration technology. The study involved a verification of anti stalling technology (AST) and V-stab vibration reduction tools. Part of the study illustrates the different in lateral vibration in different wells of matching lithology which include a statistical analysis of anti-vibration tools performance. Finally, a statistical analysis was conducted on downhole vibration measurement to investigate the sampling rate of the device. Alternating lithology has a big impact on lateral vibration; however, lateral vibration is not the same for different wells in the same formations due to the difference in the BHA assemblies. The study showed that lateral vibration using the V-stab was lower than the one using the AST tool. Considering torsional vibration, the analysis reveled [sic] that V-stab has a lower stick/slip severity than the AST tool. The field study showed that the roller-cone bit generates less torsional vibration than the PDC bit due to different cutting actions. This thesis is a research based study that aims to find new methods to improve drilling efficiency. The study investigates the effect of vibration generated using periodic pressure pulses created at the bit by a down-hole tool on the drilling efficiency, and in fact demonstrates that the technology can improve drilling efficiency. The study is based on various sets of laboratory experiments, which were conducted to characterize the functionality of a Pressure Pulses Generating (PPG) down-hole tool, and to test the effect of the down-hole tool output on actual drilling experiments. Two different setups were used to conduct the experiments in laboratory environment. In the drilling experiments synthetic rock was used as test specimens with highly controlled properties and strength. The drilling experiments were conducted at different simulated down-hole condition, including bottom hole pressures, and different fluid flow rates. The study also highlighted the effect of varying the drill string compliance on the overall effect of induced down-hole axial vibration. Finally the study sets base for further investigation and experiment that will be conducted using a bigger scale setup similar to land drill rigs.

Neither models nor experiments seem capable of fully describing the movements and forces of the drillstring during drilling. Downhole measurements could potentially hold the key to those missing insights, however data is not yet used to its full potential. This work addresses the barriers to obtaining value from downhole dynamics data and offers solutions to overcome them. A novel kinematic model was developed that fully accounts for sensor position and measurement design. It supports the hypothesis that lateral vibrations cause high-frequency fluctuations of tangential accelerations. Hence, against currently prevailing scientific opinion, “high-frequency torsional oscillations” (HFTO) are not actually a torsional phenomenon, but the consequence of a lateral vibration. A downhole measurement tool under off-center rotation captures particular high-frequency data patterns that can be considered a sensor artifact. If ignored, these artifacts can impact the calculations of RPM and other derived measurements from downhole data. An extensive set of downhole data was analyzed to improve downhole dynamics data collection schemes for detecting drilling dysfunctions. For each prominent type of dysfunction, minimum data collection frequencies are specified. Such guidelines assist in collecting downhole data at sampling rates that are high enough to draw meaningful conclusions, but low enough to not flood limited available bandwidth and memory capacities. Even though a sensor is set up to measure only a single parameter along a single axis, it captures a variety of downhole events, which may lead to misinterpretations. These events can still be differentiated based on their typical frequency ranges. It is further shown how ‘noisy’ frequency ranges can be detected and selectively removed by combining multiple downhole measurements. A lack of transparency and inefficient processes around sensor design, data collection, processing, and transfer cause misinterpretation and under-utilization of drilling downhole data. A review of tool design and sensor identifies sources of bad data quality. Eventually, defined data quality requirements will offer sustainable sensor data improvement. To work with downhole data generated under current circumstances, data processing techniques are developed and demonstrated. Algorithms that combine data, drilling processes, and physics automatically correct sensor errors. Further, a machine learning approach for automated vibration classification based on patterns is developed. A standardized structure to transfer downhole data from the service provider to the end user is suggested. The structure does not only define how the data should be shared, but also what additional data (metadata) is required. Specifications of such informational requirements improve transparency and comparability of measurements. Therefore, the proposed data format is a prerequisite for automated drilling data analysis.

Book excerpt: Since 2008, the effect of active/passive sources of drilling vibration has been a topic of research at the Drilling Technology Laboratory of Memorial University of Newfoundland. Drill-off tests have been conducted in many different settings using fully instrumented lab-scale drill rigs (Small Drilling Simulator (SDS) and Large Drilling Simulator (LDS)) and through field trials in order to validate these effects and the researchers have been able to acquire substantially prominent results, which is evident from improved drilling rates and increased dynamic downhole weight on bit (DDWOB). One of the outcomes from those experiments is the development of novel passive Vibration assisted Rotary Drilling (p-VARD) Tool, which harnesses the vibration generated at bit-rock interface to improve the drilling rate and the measured DDWOB. The p-VARD tool uses different configuration of Belleville springs and elastomer to produce desired value of tool compliance and modify the damping. The research outcomes in this thesis explain the dynamic behaviour of the p-VARD tool and helps us understand the actual phenomenon inside the tool, which results in this behaviour. Mass-spring-damper schematics of the rigid and compliant drilling systems are analyzed with the help of bond graphs in 20-sim. Results show that the p-VARD can lower the drill string natural frequency significantly enabling it to resonate at the frequencies of the top drive. In order to facilitate the p-VARD experiments in a more controlled environment, the tool has been designed for the LDS, which is more advanced than the SDS. The dynamic simulation of the Belleville springs is in itself, a separate area of research that is used for the dynamic analysis of the p-VARD tool design. The LDS offers a wide range of rotary speeds and weight on bit and can be operated fully automatically or manually. P-VARD experiments in LDS will enable us to characterize the tool properties in more depth. The LDS p-VARD tool is designed with a minimum safety factor of 3.4 against the maximum torque generated by the LDS. It utilizes a uniformly grooved sensor plates with five identical and one distinct cross-section, which is attached to the outer shell to track the axial movement of the tool. The tool is designed such that the torque is transmitted from the inner shaft to the outer shell through four uniformly spaced keys and for fluid transmission, a 13 mm through hole is made through the middle of the tool.

Book excerpt: Drill-string vibrations could cause fatigue failure to downhole tools, bring damage to the wellbore, and decrease drilling efficiency; therefore, it is important to understand the drill-string dynamics through accurately modeling of the drill-string and bottom-hole assembly (BHA) dynamics, and then develop controllers to suppress the vibrations. Modeling drill-string dynamics for directional drilling operation is highly challenging because the drill-string and BHA bend with large curvatures. In addition, the interaction between the drill-string and wellbore wall could occur along the entire well. This fact complicates the boundary condition of modeling of drill-string dynamics. This dissertation presents a finite element method (FEM) model to characterize the dynamics of a directional drill-string. Based on the principle of virtual work, the developed method linearizes the drill-string dynamics around the central axis of a directional well, which significantly reduced the computational cost. In addition, a six DOF curved beam element is derived to model a curved drill-string. It achieves higher accuracy than the widely used straight beam element in both static and dynamic analyses. As a result, fewer curved beam elements are used to achieve the same accuracy, which further reduces the computational cost. During this research, a comprehensive drill-string and wellbore interaction model is developed as the boundary condition to simulate realistic drilling scenarios. Both static and dynamic analyses are carried out using the developed modeling framework. The static simulation can generate drill-string internal force as well as the drilling torque and drag force. The dynamic simulation can provide an insight of the underlying mechanism of drilling vibrations. Top drive controllers are also incorporated as torsional boundary conditions. The guidelines for tuning the control parameters are obtained from dynamic simulations. Drill-string vibrations can be suppressed through BHA configuration optimization. Based on the developed modeling framework, the BHA dynamic performance is evaluated using vibration indices. With an objective to minimize these indices, a genetic algorithm is developed to optimize the BHA stabilizer location for vibration suppression. After optimization, the BHA strain energy and the stabilizer side force, two of the vibration indices, are significantly reduced compared to the original design, which proves the BHA optimization method can lead to a significant reduction of undesirable drilling dynamics. At the end of this dissertation, reduced order models are also discussed for fast simulation and control design for real time operation

Book excerpt: The Drilling Technology Laboratory (DTL) at Memorial University of Newfoundland has been focused on increasing drilling efficiency through the utilization of downhole vibrations, also known as Vibration Assisted Rotary Drilling (VARD). The pursuit of VARD technologies is split between active and passive vibrations and the current thesis looks at the design, development, and testing of a Passive Vibration Assisted Rotary Drilling tool (pVARD). The pVARD tool acts as a spring and damper inside the bottom hole assembly of the drill string. It is a system that is tuned to utilize the natural vibrations of the drilling process to increase drilling efficiency and rate of penetration. Two different tools were designed. First, a laboratory scale tool designed to allow analysis into pVARD to be performed on the DTL's inhouse small drilling simulator. This would allow for rapid testing of many spring damper configurations. The second, a field scale tool, that would be used with six-inch drill bits in the DTL's first field trial of VARD technology. Powered by a water well drilling rig, this tool would be used to drill shale and granite and explore the pVARD technology on an industrial scale. Both tools required the design of axial and torque taking members as well as the arrangement of the spring damper system. Specific design attention was paid to making the tools easily reconfigurable so that different spring damper arrangements could be tested, both in the lab, and the field. This investigation explores the testing results of these two tools as compared to one another, as well as learning from the operation of them in the field and how these learning will be used to improve the next generation of pVARD tools.
