Book excerpt: This manuscript is a concise review of the status of high-frequency (HF) radars for measuring various descriptors of the ocean wave-height directional spectrum. It is not intended as a historical account of the many developments and contributors to the subject over the past three decades, nor is it meant to develop the theory and techniques of HF radar in sufficient detail for planning HF radar programs. Finally, no attempt is made to review every MF/ HF experiment performed or analyzed, although several very clever techniques have been tried (e.g., bistatic arrangements, synthetic aperture systems, and balloon-borne antennas); rather, techniques are discussed that appear to have potential for practical, operational ocean monitoring. The next section reviews very briefly the principles of HF radar sea echo that make it possible to measure the wave-height directional spectrum. The section following discusses the capability and status of sky-wave (over-the-horizon) radar for making wide- area ocean surface measurements. The final section discusses the application of HF ground-wave radars to measuring the wave-height directional spectrum, both for coastal use and for deployment from offshore platforms or ships, and their accuracy. In all cases, the limitations as well as the advantages of HF radars are indicated.

Book excerpt: The goal of the work at Sheffield is to demonstrate that wave measurements obtained using HF radars are of sufficient accuracy and availability for them to contribute to the investigation of changes to the directional spectrum of waves subject to meteorological bathymetric and current variability in coastal environments for both scientific and operational applications. This report summarizes the measurements made with the OSCR HF radar in collaboration with the University of Miami, during the SHOWEX experiment in fall 1999 using inversion algorithms developed at the University of Sheffield. The data set obtained contains interesting examples of shoaling waves and fetch limited wave development but the amount of data obtained was limited by the hardware constraints of the OSCR system. Comparisons with directional wave buoys confirmed the results of earlier work that signal-to-noise and antenna sidelobes are the main sources of error in the radar wave measurements.

Book excerpt: Directional wave spectra have been estimated in this study based upon simultaneous subsurface measurements of current and pressure. Two previously developed methods, the stochastic and deterministic approaches, have been reviewed and restudied. It is demonstrated by means of the Correlation Theorem that the stochastic and deterministic approaches are, under certain conditions, identical. In order to improve directional spectrum results obtained from the combined stochastic/deterministic approach, a new method, the geometric approach, has been developed as part of this research effort. The geometric approach matches Fourier transformed wave properties to frequency dependent wavelet pairs in each frequency interval. The amplitude, direction and phase of each wavelet are uniquely specified by equating kinematic and dynamic properties for each frequency component. Wavelets evaluated in each frequency interval do not have an artificially imposed phase constraint in the geometric approach as they have in the stochastic/deterministic approach, providing a more realistic model to represent the directional properties of ocean random waves. This study shows that the geometric approach provides more reliable predictions of the water surface one-dimensional spectra as well as directional spectra. Finally, some semi-empirical equations are proposed and combined to represent the directional spectrum model. A least square error minimization analysis is used to quantify empirical equation parameters. The resulting directional spectra obtained from alternative methods are compared based on either real ocean data or computer simulated data.

This paper describes an algorithm used to extract the nondirectional wave-height spectrum from the backscatter return of a stationary ship- or rig-mounted radar employing an omnidirectional antenna for both transmission and reception. To test the effectiveness of the algorithm, its estimates are compared to those of a WAVE-TRACK buoy using data collected onboard CFAV Quest during 1988.

Book excerpt: To establish the credibility of surface wave measurements from two phased-array WERA HF (High Frequency) radars, SEACOOS (SouthEast Atlantic Coastal Ocean Observing System) funded the Mini-Waves experiment from March to May, 2005. For this study, the surface wave parameter (significant wave height) and directional wave spectrum obtained from two WERA radars were compared with those obtained from two Tri-Axys buoys during the same period. The Wyatt (1990) method was used to obtain the directional wave spectra, and significant wave heights were obtained by integrating the directional wave spectra over all directions and the selected frequency band. The SWAN (Simulating WAve Nearshore) directional wave model was used to evaluate the comparison results between WERA radars and buoys. There was a good agreement between WERA radars and Tri-Axys buoys when the echo-Doppler spectrum had a high 2nd-order SNR (signal-to-noise) ratio. The measurements didn2t agree in low sea states when the echo-Doppler spectrum had a lower SNR. Also, strong horizontal current shear caused by Florida Current (FC) had an effect on wave propagation direction. To improve the quality of WERA radar wave measurements, a longer sampling interval (10-minute interval) and procedures to remove the effect of RFI are needed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past decade, man's centuries-old interest in marine me teorology and oceanography has broadened. Ocean and atmosphere are now treated as coupled parts of one system; the resulting interest in air-sea interaction problems has led to a rapid growth in the sophistication of instruments and measurement techniques. This book has been designed as a reference text which describes, albng with the instruments themselves, the accumulated practical experi ence of experts engaged in field observations of air-sea interac tions. It is meant to supplement rather than replace manuals on standard routine observations or instnunentation handbooks. At the inception a textbook was planned, which would contain only well tested methods and instruments. It was quickly discovered that for the book to be useful many devices and techniques would have to be included which are still evolving rapidly. The reader is therefore cautioned to take nothing in these pages for granted. Certainly, every contributor is an expert, but while some are back ed up by generations of published work, others are pioneers. The choice of topics, of course, is debatable. The types of observa tions included are not exhaustive and topics such as marine aero sols and radio-tracers are omitted, as was the general subject of remote sensing, which was felt to be too broad and evol ving too rapidly. The guideline adopted in limiting size was maximum use fulness to 'a trained experimentalist new to the field'.

Book excerpt: In the history of humankind, the sea has always played a key role as a privileged medium for communication, commerce and contact among population centers. It constitutes an essential ecosystem, and an invaluable reservoir and source of food for all living beings. Therefore, its heath is a critical challenge for the survival of all humanity, particularly as one the most important environmental components targeted by global warming. Measuring and monitoring techniques are key tools for managing the marine environment and for supporting the Blue Economy. With this perspective, a series of annual international events, entitled Metrology for the Sea (MetroSea for short) was begun in 2017. Their increasing success inspired this book, which provides an anthology of tutorials dealing with a representative selection of topics of concern to a broad readership. The book covers two broad application areas, marine hydrography and meteorology, and then deals with instrumentation for measurement at sea. Typical metrological issues such as calibration and traceability, are considered, for both physical and chemical quantities. Key techniques, such as underwater acoustic investigation, remote sensing, measurement of waves and monitoring networks, are treated alongside marine geology and the monitoring of animal species. Economic and legal aspects of metrology for navigation are also discussed. Such an unparalleled wide vision of measurement for the sea will be of interest to a broad audience of scientists, engineers, economists, and their students.
