Book excerpt: Plasticity documents the proceedings of the Second Symposium on Naval Structural Mechanics held at Brown University, Rhode Island, 5-7 April 1960. It was sponsored jointly by the Office of Naval Research of the U.S. Navy and Brown University. The symposium was devoted to plasticity. The intention was to provide critical reviews of recent developments in certain areas of plasticity of particular current interest and importance, and to supplement these with short accounts of related current research work. The papers presented at the symposium covered the following areas: atomic theory of plastic flow and fracture; stress-strain relations including thermoplasticity and creep; basic theory including stability and uniqueness; boundary value problems including plates and shells; dynamic loading and plastic waves; and developments in design. Two talks were also held for the purpose of reviewing the present status of application of plasticity in design of naval vessels. The symposium was opened by Captain J. C. Myers on behalf of the Office of Naval Research and by Professor W. Prager on behalf of Brown University. Professor Prager closed the symposium by presenting a brief resume of the main accomplishments and trends in plasticity brought to light during the symposium.

Download or read book Gabor Analysis and Algorithms written by Hans G. Feichtinger and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his paper Theory of Communication [Gab46], D. Gabor proposed the use of a family of functions obtained from one Gaussian by time-and frequency shifts. Each of these is well concentrated in time and frequency; together they are meant to constitute a complete collection of building blocks into which more complicated time-depending functions can be decomposed. The application to communication proposed by Gabor was to send the coeffi cients of the decomposition into this family of a signal, rather than the signal itself. This remained a proposal-as far as I know there were no seri ous attempts to implement it for communication purposes in practice, and in fact, at the critical time-frequency density proposed originally, there is a mathematical obstruction; as was understood later, the family of shifted and modulated Gaussians spans the space of square integrable functions [BBGK71, Per71] (it even has one function to spare [BGZ75] . . . ) but it does not constitute what we now call a frame, leading to numerical insta bilities. The Balian-Low theorem (about which the reader can find more in some of the contributions in this book) and its extensions showed that a similar mishap occurs if the Gaussian is replaced by any other function that is "reasonably" smooth and localized. One is thus led naturally to considering a higher time-frequency density.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first of a two volume set on novel methods in harmonic analysis, this book draws on a number of original research and survey papers from well-known specialists detailing the latest innovations and recently discovered links between various fields. Along with many deep theoretical results, these volumes contain numerous applications to problems in signal processing, medical imaging, geodesy, statistics, and data science. The chapters within cover an impressive range of ideas from both traditional and modern harmonic analysis, such as: the Fourier transform, Shannon sampling, frames, wavelets, functions on Euclidean spaces, analysis on function spaces of Riemannian and sub-Riemannian manifolds, Fourier analysis on manifolds and Lie groups, analysis on combinatorial graphs, sheaves, co-sheaves, and persistent homologies on topological spaces. Volume I is organized around the theme of frames and other bases in abstract and function spaces, covering topics such as: The advanced development of frames, including Sigma-Delta quantization for fusion frames, localization of frames, and frame conditioning, as well as applications to distributed sensor networks, Galerkin-like representation of operators, scaling on graphs, and dynamical sampling. A systematic approach to shearlets with applications to wavefront sets and function spaces. Prolate and generalized prolate functions, spherical Gauss-Laguerre basis functions, and radial basis functions. Kernel methods, wavelets, and frames on compact and non-compact manifolds.

Book Synopsis Fundamentals of Structural Mechanics and Analysis by :
Download or read book Fundamentals of Structural Mechanics and Analysis written by and published by PHI Learning Pvt. Ltd.. This book was released on 2011 with total page 921 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive presentation of the fundamental aspects of structural mechanics and analysis. It aims to help develop in the students the ability to analyze structures in a simple and logical manner. The major thrust in this book is on energy principles. The text, organized into sixteen chapters, covers the entire syllabus of structural analysis usually prescribed in the undergraduate level civil engineering programme and covered in two courses. The first eight chapters deal with the basic techniques for analysis, based on classical methods, of common determinate structural elements and simple structures. The following eight chapters cover the procedures for analysis of indeterminate structures, with emphasis on the use of modern matrix methods such as flexibility and stiffness methods, including the finite element techniques. Primarily designed as a textbook for undergraduate students of civil engineering, the book will also prove immensely useful for professionals engaged in structural design and engineering.
